I definitely heard a laugh when I got locked in the room, but didn't twig it was him.  I also met him skulking around as well.  This is definitely going in the journal...

Yep, I heard the laugh too but didn't know who it was.

No issues with respeccing - I didn't need to do it but I was quite planned out with assigning stat points. Which isn't a brag or even a good thing: I think I would have had a bit more fun if I'd committed to the idea of using rebirth a bit more.

As great as it is, Elden Ring has kind of set From up with a bit of a conundrum again. You have loads of tools available so with a bit of lateral thinking you can probably actually progress if you really want to, given a bit of time and experimentation. However, with that design approach in mind, it's led them to create some very challenging bosses and situations towards the end, because it's saying, hey go for it, use all that shit we gave you!

But that creates a bigger gap for people who like to go into a boss and just bang their head off it until they beat it. Which sounds like a form of self abuse but it's kind of how I've approached every souls game before this. I know people are beating MBoM solo/no summons, but I don't think I am ever going to be doing that.Summoning in previous games definitely changed the boss experience from being a tense one-on-one fight to something a bit more loose, but there are points in this where I summon with the bell and still feel like it's a challenge. I guess I've had to set my own parameters for what makes the game enjoyable, which I quite like.

I can't chalk it up as a negative, or bad design, or anything like that. It was a huge challenge to not only balance it but make an experience that suited not only newcomers but their hardcore fans too, and maybe one that was slightly impossible in the end.

This is such a weird way to play games, to me!  I'd much rather just experience it naturally.  Achievements are so arbitrary, man.  I don't even think I've looked at the list once.

I don't normally bother with achievements, but in a game like this that I'm really enjoying it's a good way to encourage you to see as much as the game has to offer, especially if you plan on only playing it once (at least to begin with), like I do.

It's him alright.

Spoiler

If you kill him on first meeting you don't get locked in that room...

On the flip side, this comment to me comes across as written by an apologist. Especially when in combination with a quote such as "hopelessly stuck". Hear me out, how about the game was (better) balanced so you would not get stuck in the first place. Like Demon's and Dark 1 through 3 (include Bloodborne and Sekiro if you wish). Why offer a solution to a problem they themselves invented/created? And why praise it like it is something good?

What? Dark Souls had lots of places that were massive roadblocks, as did Bloodborne, and Sekiro had a about 5 of them. They are all far less balanced than Elden Ring in some ways and give you no options.

Credits rolled. What can I say? Game of the infinitude of the cosmos?

148 hours on the clock, my character was level 153, with 80 str being the main stat. 50 vig, 40 end, 20 mind, a bit of Dex and faith. I dual wielded a grafted blade greatsword +10 and a Heavy Greatsword +25. The raven armour that enhances jump attacks, along with the talisman that also enhances jump attacks, along with a +10 mimic made short work of the late game areas (apart from the blood lake area outside Mohgwyn's palace, that place can fuck off). Even the late bosses weren't too bad. Did the final boss on my third attempt. I had more trouble with

Spoiler

Maliketh

than the last boss.

Ending spoilers:

Spoiler

I had the option to touch Marika or summon Ranni, so I went with the latter on the basis that touching Marika must give you the default ending, so I could get that ending on any run. I was expecting some sort of death related option though, because I completed Fia's questline and got the Prince of Death's Mending Rune. I thought I would have the option to use that as well, but no. I guess I needed to do more then? Whatever, I'll look up an ending guide.

Anyway. The game is finished. Now to look up how much I missed. It will be a lot. NPC questlines particularly. As far as I know, I only completed Ranni and Fia's. So lots more are up for grabs. Oh, and old girl who gives you the second half of the secret medallion.

This game will keep me busy for months.

I fancy a Dex/int build next.

Out of those 6 games and all bosses, I never defeated 2: Bloodborne's final boss in the Chalice Dungeons and Sekiro's Glock Isshin. The prior because I could not stand Chalice Dungeons, the latter because the visual overload confused me and I could not "read" the screen so to speak. Not once did the thought of "a respec would help" or "why am I stuck with this stupid build" cross my mind.

Now, maybe there are numerous confessions from players whom were stuck with a stupid build and/or hoping for a respec option. I do not know that of course, all I can say is I never read any review/article about those 6 games where the writer wrote 'If only I could respec." (and this is the moment where you link dozens of reviews asking for a respec option).

You get the option you mentioned when you interact with the thing that you didn’t touch.

Asked in the other thread, but it’s gone a bit quiet:

Mimic question: If I’m equipped with buff items like greases or healing consumables when I cast it, and if the mimic uses them, do the items just come from some temporary magical source, or does it deplete my own permanent supply? I assume the former, but just wanted to check.

Think the mimic has a bottomless bag of consumables and he/she never runs out of FP.

This may have been shared already as I don't follow this thread that regularly due to spoilers, but (spoilers for Stormveil Castle):

When I finally did kill Godrick, Gostoc surprised me and came out, only to start stomping on the grafted madman’s head. A bit jealous watching this unfold, I lamented that the game doesn’t give you some bespoke “fuck you” moment after major wins, just for extra gratification. Ah well, good for him, I thought. Usually, this is the point where I start making my way back through a dungeon to clear out things that I missed, and double-check for secrets. Eventually, during my triple-check, it’s wiki time. With a game that hides as many secrets as Elden Ring, you can never be too careful.

I don’t quite know how I arrived at the page, but I looked up Gostoc’s page and sat in horror as I realized: It had been him. All along, this guy was scamming me. As the wiki explains, Gostoc steals from you every single time you die in the castle, apparently pocketing about 30% of the hard-won earnings you leave on the floor.

Actually, it’s even more messed up than that. Gostoc kinda goes out of his way to steal from you at least once by putting you in a dangerous situation. There’s a point, for example, where you get locked in a room in Stormveil Castle with a very tough knight. When you experience it, you think–oh, this is just typical Souls brutality. Bosses and mini-bosses find some way to trap you, usually behind fog, so this felt like the game pulling its usual tricks.

But fans have found evidence of Gostoc skulking suspiciously at various points in the castle, seemingly having teleported there from his initial starting point. While he’s not outright trailing behind you, the fact he’s there at all–and that he seems so shifty in the first place–gives the illusion that he’s been following you. So, the theory goes, perhaps Gostoc is the reason you got trapped in the first place? The Wiki claims you can hear his laugh, but I don’t quite recall if I heard that at the time. There’s certainly footage of him sneaking around, and if you go up to him during these moments, he seems weirdly guilty about something. That’s why he’ll offer you an item out of nowhere. He’s pocketing way more valuable stuff.

THE ACTUAL FUCK?! This game is the best of all time. No doubt.

Wow! I killed Gostoc on my first meeting with him (the only NPC I even considered doing that to), and am glad to know my instincts were right, the thieving prick. I'm sure all of the other NPCs I have entered into a bargain with will be completely honourable arrangements.

I just fought the boss just to the East (and South a bit) of Altus Highway junction with 11 Volcano Pots on my belt, and my Mimic was still lobbing them when I'd run out.

Great item that by the way.

To echo everybody else, Mimic does not drain your items. Also, Mimic does not get poisoned by eating the item so you can safely equip the item that heals and poisons you (don't be a fool and use that item by accident like I did during Malenia. The extra stress made me age a decade).

edit: clarified the "not getting poisoned part".
