I recall some time ago some asked me for a citation needed on being able to parry bosses, and how you need to do it more than once to get the crit. This vid shows it.

It also taught me something, that you can hold block and still parry, which lessens the risk of it going wrong. Neat.

OMG Game Changer for me!  Thanks for the tip.  I can stick Parry back on my shield now and be an even more awesome Souls Cover Guy Knightboi!

Couldn't disagree any more really. Its focussed and not at all messy. It's the natural evolution of all the games to date and by miles the best open world game.

I think the story is overcomplicated nonsense masquerading as something mysterious and deep. The quality of the bosses is all over the place, same for the difficulty. It really feels like two different ideas - open world + dungeons - glued together with "Dark Souls"

Spoiler

. Repeated proper bosses (Astel is literally used twice), repeated boss mechanics (fast one, slow one, very big one, the one with a gimmick, this is a duo, this one has a hidden second phase).

Souls is exciting. Bloodborne is something completely different. Sekiro is something different. What is Elden Ring? A poor Dark Souls 4 with an open world that's - hot take - really not that special.

Explain to me like I am a 5 year old, what makes this open world so good?

I finally got a larval tear and went to respec. For losing 20 attack power (<5%) on my moonveil I’ve doubled my HP pool, slightly increased my stamina, and added a third to my equip load. Bonkers.

The “problem” is it’s not clear from the outset that weapon damage is mostly dictated by upgrades more than  scaling. It makes perfect sense when you think about it, but it’s a hard habit to break after 1000s of hours of Souls nonsense.

After playing the first 80 hours with about 12 HP it’s going to be interesting going back in and facing those bosses.

Edit: I just realised the estus doesn’t necessarily fill the whole bar

Er weapon damage has always been largely dictated by upgrades. Since at least Dark Souls. It's always been as important if not more than stat scaling.

Where the hell are any sites of grace in the capital?!?!? It’s bloody brutal!

If you get to the main road down below and kill the mini boss then look for an open door. Yeah that bit is brutal! those knights! A nagakiba with piercing fang works well for their blocking shields.

Trying a different approach in Caelid and it's so damned fun:

Spoiler

Luring giant dogs into Redmane soldier encampments. The wee fort in the south is the best, where there's a big guarded ramp, a fire machine and an archer firing spells at you. There's a white dog nearby who summons his mates and you can just lead him into the front of the fort, run past the soldiers, pop a summon and join in the absolute chaos. So satisfying to see someone else getting their heads ripped off by those monstrosities!

Just beat Renalla. Pretty cool boss fight. I like that she also uses summons. Makes it feel less like cheating.

Now I'm umming and ahhing over whether or not to respec. Have no idea how to into magic.

Magic is neat. The biggest hurdle is the early game where your HP does not increase since you'll pump all your point in INT (probably). Base HP gets you one-shot by even the most basic enemies. 70 INT sounds cool, but 9 HP isn't.

Another issue is the sheer amount of spells (incantations). I ended ups using maybe 7 (pebble, meteor, Azur, stars of ruin etc.) the entire game, the rest I never touched. You can become ludicrously powerful and a blessing to anyone who summons you (Comet Azur + that damage buff + that 1-time use flask + large FP pool = 13 seconds of laser beam that melts* bosses. I swear I solo'd bosses while the summoner and the other person were running around with their shields up). Better yet, have your Mimic tank/distract bosses while you blast the boss in the face. It's almost cheating.

It's not the most exciting class though, and you can cheese certain encounters (just like someone with bow and arrow, just shoot fools from the high ground/far away) but give it a shot.

*if they stand still. Comet Azur does not track so you need to time it.

I've used 1 and have 12 in my inventory. I must say this Elphael level is fucking insane, it's ridiculous. They need to nerf scarlot rot it's so fucking hard.

Let me tell you about a place called Lake of Rot.

After Morgott, are you meant to come back to the Capitol to level up? The snowy giant area seems so empty and hard.

I cleared the small fort of fire people and got to Commander Niall in the other place, who can go fuck himself because I’m only interested in attempting boring fucking knights on a really good day.
But that first set of ruins is insane. I’m doing over 900 damage with my hits, and it’s taking about 7% off their health. Whilst they’re three shotting me. Which is stupidly balanced for an open area with many of them about.

Feel like the difficulty curve is one thing, but it’s left me with barely anything to do to be able to level to take it on. I have no idea where I’m meant to be going and what I’m meant to be doing. Again. The leader dude at the table has told me to find the final 3. Is Commander Niall the path to them?

Can you backup saves on PS5?

Oh yeah, via USB stick. Pop it in, go to Settings -> Storage -> choose platform (I've PS4 and PS5 games so) -> choose game -> copy to USB.

If you mess up a build, same path but than copy from External to Storage.

edit: the last time I tried on PS4 it works via Cloud as well, but that has like a limited amount of tries IIRC. So just use a USB stick.

Oh I been there, at least that was kind of the point to the place and the boss you had to fight on it wasn't actually that hard. This is ridiculous this worm thing in the rot.

Good luck. I’m taking a break from them because I know I can do them but I’m so bored of making stupid mistakes.

I’m using a Claymore with Bloody Slash. Recommend those ashes.

I hated Lake of Rot on my mage. Not enough HP, not enough immunity.

I just cheesed the worm thing with fly swarm, Marikas soreseal giving me enough fth for it and I had a +25 Clawmark seal that I helped someone move to another character, haven't needed to delve into incantations at all throughout the whole game until here, haven't struggled with anything tbh. It kinda feels a bit like 5-2 in Demons but on acid!

Just defeated the boss of Volcano Manor...

Spoiler

fetchimage.jpeg.56a6539a9f0667556e654e2ca5169104.jpeg

Spoiler

Lol, that was goofy as fuck. I literally picked up the spear thing by the door, equipped it and then spammed the special attack on it for the entire fight, both stages! He didn't hurt me once, apart from some lava when I had to pause to top up my FP. I staggered him three times.

This seems completely borked. Is this what you're supposed to do?

Judging by the numerous texts I got from my friend early declaring it as bullshit as he died continuously it doesn't always go like that. It took me 3 or 4 attempts, sometimes he can break the stunlock and basically oneshot you. But otherwise yeah I think it's supposed to be like that

Spoiler

like Yhorm basically.

Yeah, definite Yhrom vibes!

There were still times when he was able to get an attack off, but the special had such range and stun-locked him so easily that o was able to keep out of the way.

Anyway, that's that, I guess. None of these big 'legacy' bosses have been especially trying since Margit.

Yeah I've not really had any trouble except for a gank boss in an underground area I won't mention. I've had to seriously adjust my gameplay in this final level though, christ it's hard, some of the hardest content they've ever made imo.

More NPC adventures this evening. Really liking the stories and worldbuilding that's delivered through the questlines.  Have done everything I need to in Ranni's now I think

Spoiler

(I have now got the sword),

and Fia's was pretty awesome as well.  Am about halfway thru the NPC quests now.

122 hours in and still to clear the capital!
