Just defeated Margit after 34 hours.  I'm still bewildered by the stats, scaling and weapon types. But I've got shield blocking sussed now. That makes a huge difference. Going through Stormveil Castle.  Those crows with blades can fornicate off. I'm using a scimitar like blade that seems to regenerate a bit of health when I kill someone and is pretty quick  and a Zweihander which does good damage but slow.

I think it's a good game, but I'm not as obsessed as some of you guys.  I can't play it for too long.  It's very oppressive. I'm more a bright coloured Nintendo type of gamer.

So I think I'm going to be playing this all year!!

Gravity spells/arts are devastating on flying enemies if that helps

I’ve heard people talking about upgrading their casting items, am I missing something? The blacksmith doesn’t see them, is there somewhere else to take them?

Bruh. Lol.

Why would I do that? I wasn't complaining they were easy, I was commenting on how difficult the other enemies were.

Doesnt sound like a lot of fun just spamming a spell to beat every boss without taking a hit!

I just rage quit for the evening at the CFA boss. I'm really not sure what you're supposed to do. Not be a melee build I guess? And what even is

Spoiler

that red stuff? It inflicts you with a status abnormality. How do you protect yourself? I guess you don't.

I've tried using the Blasphemous Claw to counter, but it didn't help. Also, the run from the grace point...pushing forwards for 30 seconds for each attempt isn't fun.

The thing is I have enough resources to take about 15 weapons to max, I just have no idea what would be best.

Ah right I know who it is. MtBB. Need a (magic) hand? Not sure if I am too high by now as a level 130.

Free tip that saved me from the RED stuff: summon a good sturdy Ash (I used the Mimic) as a distraction and abuse the pillars. Not all attacks are blocked (some go through it because of course) but it can help a lot. Also, use all of the HP and DEF talisman you have. Stack that shit up :)

As for what weapon to use, I don't know. I wield a staff that chucks plasma from a distance.

Well, the “blood dancer” ARC/DEX build has been tremendous fun. Almost certainly the most fun out of the builds I’ve tried so far. It was very smooth sailing the entire middle of the game* (unsurprisingly, as the Eleonora’s Poleblade doesn’t need very high stats to shine), but towards the end of the game it suffered a bit against tankier opponents with high poise and dragons in particular (it’s hard to land piercing attacks on them, their bleed threshold is high and the weapon’s fire damage isn’t the best, I assume). I never really bothered to use the dragon communion spells I got, even though they did seem quite powerful as I found the melee approach much more fun, but I was glad to have them to use against a few frustrating mini-bosses situated in frustrating terrain.

I actually needed to swap the twin blade out for the Rivers of Blood katana which does a very similar thing - bleed effect, additional fire damage and a mix of DEX and ARC scaling, but with bigger single hit damage at the expense of twirly combos. That said, the weapon skill “corpse piler” is pretty ridiculous damage wise - it’s like bloody slash, but chainable for extra FP and has no HP cost!

M,BoM went down like a tonne of bricks though. That was the easiest version of that encounter I’ve done, and a good 20 levels lower than normal to boot. Vid below:

Spoiler

*Radahn in particular got absolutely merked.

Spoiler

He didn’t even make it to phase 2!

I have a talisman that slowly restores HP called

Spoiler

Blessed Dew Talisman

- it's not super effective at negating the health drain but if you find time to breathe it might save you a flask.

Also, Mimic Tear Ashes+10, or however high you can take it!

What's people's fave music so far, then? I think mine is Godskin apostle them, it's EPIC.

I feel like the music is the one big weak point of the game. It is crying out for a big, memorable main theme.

Looking around online I think I'm at the last boss... (phase spoiler)

Spoiler

Excuse me: last bosses. It's the Sekiro finale all over again!

I can barely get to the real battle because the start of everything has my greatest weakness - attacks that are later than I think, causing me to roll for nothing and eat a hit. Damnit.

I agree. It seems crazy that I've played this for over 110 hours but I couldn't hum a single tune from it. None of the music has stuck in my head at all.

Errrmm, just beat the Carian Study Hall area and got to the Divine Tower. Picked up a couple of items…

Spoiler

One was a new talisman that looks useful

Can someone let me know what the other item was. Stupidly skipped over it now don’t know what I’ve just gained

I don't know what the other item is, but if you press L3 in the inventory menu, you can arrange your items by order of acquisition.

Beat Renalla earlier.  Kinda disappointed nothing much changed at the Roundtable.  I was hoping for a bit of a fanfare, a new NPC appearing, someone leaving or something, but never mind.  Tried exploring more of the northern lakes area to get somewhere new, and I had to stop about three times just to look at the views and take screenshots.  After 60 odd hours the game is still surprising me with how great it looks.  I found a little spot called The Four Belfries, and the view from there is incredible.

The more I play of this, the more I feel like I’m just going through the motions. I spent a fair while in Raya Lucaria this evening, and while it looks great, it just reminds me of loads of other bits of Souls. Felt a lot like running around the rooftops of Irythil. There was one point where I was climbing up ladder on the side of a tower and I was half expecting to find a princess with a tail up there.

Just makes me glad I haven't experienced a souls game until this tbh.  It's all new and pretty fucking impressive to me.

Bloodborne the scant 60 mins I gave it feels like I should now revisit.

Demon souls on PS5 is the only thing making me think. Ignore the horrid design. Fucking get one.

This thought did not exist until 3 weeks ago.

I genuinely agree with the high scoring reviews and what Nate wrote in Edge this month.

It's like being Welsh and thinking thats it for me. I'm just listening to the Manics and Phonics.

Where as everyone's lives would be much improved by listening to the Super Furries instead.  It is genuinely bringing something new to the tired old open world formula that we have been force fed the past years.

@HarryBizzle

It sounds weird but I think its size and scope can actually fatigue or overwhelm after a while playing. I definitely have had many highs and lows with it so far.

It's still amazing but it's a serious investment of time and effort. I'm very much looking forward to finishing and letting it settle for a while in my mind.

I was about to say that that's unfair on the Manics, as their early output was great, but then I considered the promising early entries in modern open world franchises (Assassin's Creed 1, Far Cry 2, GTA 1), and, yeah, that comparison holds up perfectly.

Now we just need the McClusky of open-world games and I'll be delighted.

You’re right. Moment to moment, I’m engaged, but the whole thing is just falling slightly flat for me. I think I’m only two main areas in and am torn between finding a lot of the open world stuff feel like filler and not wanting to miss any of the good stuff, so am working my way through the world with a fine tooth comb, which maybe takes something away from it all, especially when a lot of it feels so familiar.

Moving house tomorrow and virgin turned our internet off earlier today. Just tried firing this up on my PS5 but it’s just stuck on the main screen with a ‘please wait’ message & not letting me into the game at all. I’m not even getting to the option to play offline.

had anyone managed to play this without a connection to the internet?

Got to the real final battle - in a roundabout way. In fact I got about halfway through it.

I dropped spirit ashes from the start for the distraction, and then pulled out the WS* weapon just to get a ranged option. Being able to attack without being in slapping distance is fun - who knew?
