Fucking FG.  I can reliably get him down to about 90% of his health before he smashes me into the ground.  This is with me at level 100 with a fully leveled Bloodhound's Fang.

I'm not sure what to do now as it is the first time I've come across something that appears unbeatable for my build.

What am I missing on Melania? Am Mage focussed (from the top of my head, level 125 or something. 40 HP, 40 FP, base END, 70 INT, enough STR and DEX to wield Moonveil (which from memory is like 11/18)). I...

- tried the Fly Swarm tactic which while good is nowhere near aggressive enough which leads to Fowl

- tried the Moonveil weapon tactic which while good puts me in grave danger. Also Fowl

- tried Moonveil with a +9 Mimic. Melania brushes off most attacks an the rare times where I do get some proper damage in... Fowl which heals her right up

- tried with the blood Ash (forgot its name. The well fast dagger one). Big damage coming from that Ash but because of Fowl the Ash almost always dies and Melania is healed

- tried being extremely aggressive

- tried being a cowardly turtle and spam flies from a distance. Which eventually leads to Fowl

- respecced several times (today I started making back up saves, I've 2 items left)

- summoned 1 help (who wielded a good fire wave sword knocking Melania down like 90% of the time it her her)

- summoned 2 help (which created a 3-man fly party, was rather funny to watch)

I am nowhere near closer to defeating her. Fowl gets me every single time UNLESS I use Bloodhound Step but that makes me unable to use Moonveil. My Ash Buddy (both the bleed one and Mimic) can on a good day just barely survive Fowl. Might leave this for NG+, as right now I am nowhere near defeating her. It's the Fowl that gets me every single time. Might just overlevel and pump everything in HP.

I've heard about that Mohg guy - I've been given a thing from a NPC that says I need to wait... and that's it.

should I just forget about that stuff for now and it'll happen at some point?

The thing you got, is the way to THE farming spot!

Its optional. Come back to it when you want. I came back (after respeccing from int to faith following finishing the game) and used a mimic strategy to keep her perma aggroed at the mimic and the mimic alive but it healing itself inbetween attacks. That needs a faith build and some items.

30+ hours in and Godrick has finally fallen after concentrating on it last night. Now on to Liurnia of the Lakes!

I think I may have made a bit of a mistake in my levelling. My dream was to have a character who wields sword and sorcery equally well, but what's happening is that my strength and intelligence upgrades are having to fight for equal billing while I try to keep pace with HP and endurance etc, and so I feel like I'm only very slowly levelling up my attacking power. It would have been easier to concentrate on one discipline or the other, I think, but I'm kinda committed to this path now. I don't feel like I'm good enough at melee (in terms of avoiding enemy attacks) to only use a sword and shield, but I would run out of magic sooner or later if I went down the sorcerer path. And now I'm level 35ish and it's taking me over 9k runes to level up, so each individual level is now taking a long while to achieve! Maybe it'll all work out?

(The mind boggles at how some of you are getting to over Level 100...)

Later on Runes drop by the tens of thousands from bosses so no need to worry about having to farm Runes. As someone who spent all points on INT early in the game I must warn you, you really do want some HP sooner rather than later. There'll be bosses and enemies that one-shot you with base HP. Also, you get the opportunity to respect for a cost (limited resource but you can work around that by making a back up save before committing to a build) later on in the game. No need to worry about being stuck with a wonky build.

The last boss is properly killing my enthusiasm for the game. I couldn’t get him down as strength so I’ve gone faith and, whilst it’s a little better, it’s still not great. Making me not want to play!

I’ve smashed every other boss in two or three goes (apart from Malenia who took a while longer), but once the last boss gets to phase 2, I just can’t keep close enough to keep the damage up. It’s not a fun boss, imo.

I totally understand your pain. Really soured me on the game. Was a nightmare withy melee build.

I'm not feeling massively fussed about killing the final boss now I'm there either. I'd prefer a fresh game to ng+, so I might just leave him?

The final run of bosses has been very tricky for me to do without a tasty side of cheese anyway. Butting up against my lack of skill I think.. I've pretty much relied on swapping to a more effective build for each of them rather than sticking with the mostly faith build I've used for pretty much the rest of the game.

Last 4 boss spoilers

Spoiler
  • Maliketh the black blade was too fast for me, but after swapping to a sorcery spec and just using the meteorite staff with some basic spells I had he was pretty easy.
  • Godfrey does all those big smashes and I couldn't get any casts off as sorcery, so I upgraded the Rivers of Blood katana to +9 and went arcane/dex for bleed. Absolutely melted him, it was amazing. Having not really used a bleed weapon before, it was eye opening. Massive hits. I loved it. So so satisfying.
  • Then of course Radagon and the Elden Beast are bleed immune, so I spec'd back into sorcery thinking that'd be the way to go - but got no where really. Swapped back to my orginal faith build with the Blasphemous Blade and that works a lot better. Against Radagon anyway, Elden Beast flies - which I always struggle against. Maybe killable if I keep battling away. Or I could go level up a ton, I'm 114 or something now? 50 Vigour, bit more than 50 faith, 26 mind, 20 end. Everything else minimal. Another 10 vigour might help a lot?

My main takeaway though is how insanely satisfying the bleed build was. I know it's probably ideal circumstances with the best bleed weapon in the game, but it was amazing. If it wasn't for all the bleed immune bosses I'd definitely go bleed on my next run.

How does the Mimic keep herself alive? I think I saw Faith spells that heals party members but that has to be instigated by me, no?

No. If you have Erdtree Heal equipped when you summon the mimic, the mimic has Erdtree Heal equipped and will use it when their health is low in most circumstances themselves.

I’m sort of going down this route as well. I managed to grab the Meteoric Ore Blade from a suicide run in Caelid and it scales with INT, so I’m thinking I’d like to do a bit of melee and magic.

I do feel I’m spreading a bit thin at the moment, but hopefully it’ll all work out.

I’m not really sure what pumping levels into ENT does for me though. Do I need a staff of some sort? Spells? A bit of an idiots guide would be greatly appreciated, as would anyone’s take on whether this is actually a viable build.

The fextralife wiki is your absolute best guide.

All I can say from experience as a Glass Cannon is, don't skip on HP. In the earlier levels (shall we say up to 60) I ran with BASE HP and that got me killed in one hit by all bosses which makes for very frustrating moments. All the INT in the world can not protect you from getting hit in the face. Offense is a good defense but I took it way too far. Respecced and now I have a healthy 1200+ HP which allows me at least survive one for two direct hits.

Sorceries are cast with a Staff, Incantations are cast with an... uhm. The other thing. Definitely not a staff. Sorceries aim more at pure offensive skills, Incantations give you support (healing, protecting you and your team mates etc). Fextralife has ALL the info.
