I feel like a bit of a dingbat, but what am I meant to be doing early-game? I still get stomped by giants, random horse guys, etc etc around the Gatehouse Ruins but I've got the not-bonfires up until the first boss opened up. The first boss just wrecks me right now though.

Should I just explore, level up and Git Gud?

The seals are not showing up for me. There’s meant to be one right next to the lectern, but it’s not there.

you first have to interact with the stone goblin thing that's holding what looks like a book

YES! I've just randomly stumbled upon this Hoarfrost thing everybody keeps saying makes the game easy. Here we go!

Right. Right? Oh.

Carried on. Met some hand things. Nope.

Carried on went up some cool side of a rock dungeon with annoying song bat birds. Danced around a big pole with a dragon, went into a new area found a cave killed by an invisible ninja boss who slit my throat. Cool.

Kept the PS5 offline to stay at v1.02 so I could bloody slash Ghost Godfrey. No idea if the nerf is real, but I doubt they’ve made it more powerful.

Anyway, finally got him, the bast. Onto the next roadblock: Morgott. His phase 2 is a pain. But Hoarfrost seems to work well (also pre-nerf), so another reason to stay offline.

Question re. the Morgott fight:

Spoiler

What happens if Melina (fire maiden) dies? As she has every try so far. Does it fuck up a major questline?

Really loving these Evergaol fights, might be my favourite part of the game to be honest. Very clean fights with short run-back distances! Just managed to do Godefroy without taking damage, which felt pretty good.

Spoiler

Also enjoyed fighting a Demonic Tree Sentinel I came across too, feel like this kind of stuff hits just the right level of difficulty for me.

Those are the rough stats for it, taken off 3 hits to the same enemy. More consistent, is probably the word.

Taken from the below, spoilered due to potential enemy spoiler (mid game ish) - it also shows just how laughably nerfed Hoarfrost became.

I’m still having the problem that I’m wandering around with my starting +20 uchi and bow doing the same shit I was doing 70 hours ago. Unless I lean into magic of some sort there’s precious little I can do to diversify my gameplay. Some customisation of combos and movesets for the sword and boarders would have been just the ticket. The second you equip a staff or seal you unlock piles of spells to cycle through. I’ve spent the entire game collecting stacks of upgrades I can’t use. Meanwhile bows are garbage, don’t really scale with dex, and arrows are annoying to craft. I can respec, I have probably over a hundred weapons at this point, but I wish I could make the basic melee samurai more interesting. Heck, give me more moves from Sekiro.

I seem to finally be at about the right level to properly explore Caelid. Had a fantastically enjoyable fight against Commander Wotsistname - one of those Souls fights where you kinda think “Actually I think I can do this” and you get better with each try. Then I cleared out Sellia Magic Town and went to a very familiar place using a key I found there. Very satisfying.

I’m now chilling and trying out the moves of every single weapon and be collected so far!

Change to another high dex weapon now they've reduced upgrade costs. The variation of weapons is the variation on combos. Alternatively you've the choice of dual welding katanas and exploring the weapon arts. Swap the bow out for a special one - I'm rocking the auto posion one at the minute.

I was initially on a Zweihander but switched to a Troll Golden Sword as it has the original DS1 Zwei moveset - R1 horizontal sweep, R2 vertical slam. Suitable for all situations. But trying to keep the Zwei competitive in case I need range or the narrow poke for corridors and I have a few Somber weapons on the go for situational uses - Tree Sentinel Halberd for its holy damage, and the Spinning disc thing for bleed.

I have also just found a big ass club which I am tempted to also upgrade for the strike damage if it is now cheap enough.

The expense of some of this and the difficulty of getting some classes of stones is irritating as though, and From have made this same mistake of making it harder than need be to trial weapons in the last 3 games. Not got to the patch yet, hoping it really is better.

Anyway, From have broken me a bit so I need to rework my playstyle a little. My limited FP was almost entirely used on barricade shield. I have a few miracles but primarily they were for cure poision or an estus conferring shield.

I can't settle on a weapon art I like for my big ass sword. Sweeps almost always mean taking a trade which I dislike and some enemies appeared to be poise breaking me anyway. Warcry has a useful strength enhancement, but it screws the moveset a bit. I don't need the Earthquake one - Colossal Swords are good enough at clearing mobs quickly for zero FP cost thank you very much. Hoarfrost would have some use even after the mega nerf, but it messes the scaling.

I’ve been tinkering/re-speccing most of this evening and when it’s not been my cup-of-tea playstyle wise, I’ve rolled back my save from the PSN upload/cloud.

The thing is my DEX non-bleed build is perfect, and I’ve never achieved that first run because I always ended up Quality. And I know if I take my SL past 150, it’ll start to become a jack-of-all-trades, which becomes very dull, very quick. That said i am getting 10 DEX from 2 Talismans, so there’s an argument for a 160 meta. But each to their own.

I think I’m just gonna ignore the plethora of fools on YouTube taking advantage of the popularity of this game by showing anyone and everyone the least fun way to play the game (i.e. broken OP shit) and just do what I wanna do.

My perverse brain is thinking a Bow only build. The research and prep grabbing stuff early is actually more exciting than progressing the game, especially now I’ve seen it all.

I don't know why there isn't an option just to respec your weapon upgrades to be honest. It's not like From are committed to the idea that your decisions are permanent given you can respec your whole character.

Getting a new weapon should feel like 'I can't wait to try this out right now!' rather than 'I wish I could try this out but I can't be arsed going back to the first mine in the game to look for more smithing stone (1) and (2) to get it to a respectable level so I'm just going to let it sit in my inventory so I can carry on doing the fun stuff'

I hear there is a large basement or something in Stormveil. I've been through quite a lot of it and activated 3 elevators in total, but haven't found a basement. Any clues on where to find it?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I've not been in Stormveil for about fifty hours, but does the shortcut to the basement begin by jumping on some ledges opposite the group of pot enemies?

The regular upgrade path to +25 has clearly been designed to be gate-locked by progression through certain areas as the map unfolds.

But, the amount of stones per jump (12 stones for 3 levels) is a bit much considering there are 8 bumps x 12 + 1 final stone = 97!

My only advice is learn where the Bells come from, so you can pay less than I did yesterday. 😆

Thanks. I just ran away from those little bros. They don’t mean no harm.

I'm losing interest at a rapid pace. After doing hours of the worst level design in eons (part of the mage's quest chain, it's beyond awful) I'm now in Lyndell. The longer I play the more it becomes apparent it's just Dark Souls 4. It's... Dark Souls with an open world that's tossed to the side the more the story progresses. For a new IP this is severely lacking, it's - again - just Dark Souls.

So who is this for? It'll not be for those who dislike Dark Souls in the first place and those who do like it might want something more than the same type of enemies and bosses, the same kind of exploration, the same kind of "aha, hidden enemy in alcove!" traps. I like the open world, that's fun. Dungeons and bosses is where the quality just nose dives, they had no idea what to do so they did what they always do.

I can't even remember what my character fights for. I genuinely can not remember the antagonist. I must become a lord blahblah, something something tree. And fingers.

You know that Dark Souls rllmuk tradition of coming in to a thread and claiming a boss is an unbeatable cunt and then 5 minutes later you come back and say ‘just beat him, lol’?

Well, that’s not me. I can’t do it. Maybe the most attempts at any Souls boss ever. He’s just a fucking shitty little invader. What am I going to do? Should I sell my Xbox?
