Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Announced

I’m not remotely surprised that they’ve nerfed Hoarfrost Stomp and Bloody Slash because they were ridiculous and trivialised several bosses. I’m amazed they’ve actually buffed a bunch of sorceries though. Trust me, there’s still some absurdly OP shit in this game.

The lakes is my favourite area so far! It's just so rich and huge and scary and misty and full of lobsters and...oh I love it so much. Still so much to do in that area.

I do think you can have sessions like the ones described above though. Take a break is my, rather patronising and un-needed advice. I'm taking my time with this game, it'll be over too soon and you can never discover it again.

The initial reveal of the lakes is genuinely one of the most jaw-dropping sights in gaming. I've just found it lacking when I'm exploring around in the fog...i've not found an awful lot. Perhaps not helped playing it on the Xbone, the frame rate tanks at times plus the load times upon death are a drag.

It's possible that I ruined it a little by exploring very early on when I found a way to skip the castle, so I'd already run around like mad picking up items and avoiding lobsters. Now I'm still avoiding lobsters but have less to find.

I think it's because I haven't found much in the way of castles or dungeons to explore, it's all overworld encounters. I'm sure there's loads there but I haven't found much (I did find my way to the river and killed a load of ants and eventually the boss, that was ace).

If I'm feeling a little fatigued of the game I also can't stop playing, reading about it and thinking about it. Gaaah.

Glad they have fixed the Arcane bug and some of the other glitches / exploits

Mimic Tear though, its PVE only, so not sure on that one.  Need to see how badly it has been nerfed

At least Bleed is still as powerful, time to actually use Rivers of Blood Katana now, its way more powerful than my twinblade after the patch

Altus Plateau is feeling a bit like a filler area. A lot of it kinda just looks like Limgrave with a yellow filter on it and there doesn't seem to be much new going on or many striking vistas to see. The windmill area was fun but apart from that I'm a bit meh on it so far coming from the embarrassment of riches that was the lake.

Couldn't disagree more! Altus Plateau is a beautiful worn-torn area full of awesome cool thing, and all leading up to the amazing Capital.

It's maybe my favourite area so far, and far more interesting than the lake area...

A question re Mt Gelmir

Spoiler

I got to the Manor/castle at the top... Was a bit confused that it just seemed to be a place where I can join a faction (which I totally did!) rather than a huge amazing legacy dungeon, which it looks like from the outside!

Have I missed something?  Do I need to progress the faction to get in?  Betray them?  Or just look around a bit more?

Upon killing some targets, plus interactions with the manors members, you will be given a hint!

From what I can tell it doesn't affect much

Spoiler

You join them and they send you on 3 invasion quests to kill NPCs in their worlds.  They also give you a key to open up some of the rooms in the Volcano Manor.

There's no obvious reason not to do it.

The whole outside area around the manor is the legacy dungeon.

Did you um...talk to people in the rooms?

Did they mention any concerns? About...stuff? Maybe hinting where there's more hidden to explore?

Nice - it does feel like I'm a little weedy for this area though, that tree spirit and the enemies around here generally hit like absolute trucks!!

In slightly nicer news, I had a small potter around Caelid last night, and faced my fears!!  Those big doggos and the crows and aren't actually too bad.  I hate the weird spasm-death animation the crows have though.  Jesus christ.

Maybe I just need to explore it more but all I've really found is the windmill area, a large forest containing little other than a lot of identical enemies kind of milling around, some standard enemy camps and a mine that could be any one of the other 5 mines I've already found. The forest had a cool little treasure map I guess.

I've watched a couple of clips this morning; its still as tanky, but only uses boring regular attacks, not spamming flashy arts like before. Doesn't look like it heals anymore either. They basically dumbed down the A.I.

Time to bust out Tiche.

The game does have alot of repeating small, dungeons which are debatable, but there are some larger dungeons, and the one in Altus should not be missed.

I quite like the aesthetic of the area too, as Kevvy mentions, it feels like it has been through a much tougher time then the others!

OK OK you win. I'm back in. I refunded this after a really bad first impression. But kept reading pretty much everyone raving about so decided to give it another crack and I think it's safe to say that it's won me over.

So what went wrong ? Well I started out by missing the tutorial area, I didn't find the setting that changed to from controller to M&K ui and I really didn't like the feel of the movement and the physics.

But I determined to try harder and after finding the tutorial area, rebinding all the controls lowering the mouse sensitivity I began to feel it a bit more. I read up on the basics so I understood what was happening a bit and well you guys know the rest.

I still don't like the physics and the feel of the controls but the more I play the more used to it I become and the less it bothers me. I still think there is too many insta death platformy type bits mind you.

One of the impressions that put me off initially as well was the arbitrary feel of it. I looked out over the vista and there are clusters of random things just plonked around. I haven't entirely got over this, its one of my pet hates in MMOs, go here , find the same group of NPCs doing the same thing for ever.

However I have started to really enjoy myself, it looks fantastic in places and hasn't been as frustrating as I feared. I am only at about level 18 but I've been riding around smacking trolls from horseback and generally having a great time with it. Sure I am confused a lot of the time and I have no idea if I am creating a good build , and I still cant aim my fireballs so they actually hit anything. But I am feeling the satisfaction of taking on the challenges and (sometimes) prevailing and enjoying exploring this unique open world.

The catacombs are basically this game's BotW Shrines, or the chalice dungeon's from Bloodborne.

Every one of the has a cool design and different layout, but they're generally built from the same assets.

liar ahead is something I want to stay saying in daily use

I've started seeing 'liar ahead' used incorrectly, eg. behind a message that says 'item ahead' when there really is an item ahead. You basically can't trust anyone

I assume you mean

Spoiler

the hidden wall in one of the rooms which leads to a whole massive area to explore etc ?  Pretty certain i've done everything there but if I've missed something do tell as i'd loooooove to explore it.  I was probably explaining badly that there's no reason not to join the Volcano Manor mob as you get quests and the key to the rooms which lets you explore more.

This...was a 100% physical def shield before right? Hence my using it! :(

It was, but, in all the previous games, the shield that gave stamina regen, was not.

So it seemed odd to me that it was 100%, it was something i expected they would nerf.

Im gonna load it up and check if they nerfed the brass shield, as i expect that to be nerfed aswell, as it was waaay to good for a med shield lol

EDIT: brass shield still awesome, hoarfrost, half as good...rip great sword and hoarfrost, back to sword of ruins, as wave of destruction is awesome still. Also, smithing stone cost, way down!

Absolutely. Some of the designs are really great inside, and I only complain because I give other games a hard time about it. But in reality, many do not care about re use! :)

The medium sized dungeons in this game totally blew my mind though, my first time doing Castle Morne was just unbelievable.

I don't think there's any control over which messages end up in your world (other than using the group passwords), plus stuff gets deleted, so you can end up with any combination dotted around.
