Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Announced

I’ve played a lot of hours and only now have I discovered how good barricade shield is. I thought it’d just make me block better and I’d still be suffering a barrage of combo attacks, just with more stamina at the end. But no! With it active lots of attacks bounce off on the first hit, leading to countering for MASSIVE damage.

Amaze.

So I’m closing in on 20 hours played now, spent some time doing Co op on Margit and Godrick to earn those rune shard things I need to activate the Great Rune I have equipped. I’ve spent a lot of time in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula and less time in the Lakes.

I’m really enjoying my time with this. I expect I’ll be playing it for months before I finish it and it will probably be my GOTY. But all the same, I remain largely unconvinced by the open world. I agree that Souls has needed something new added to the formula, and I’m not sure this is it. There is a LOT of Souls fodder here. I’m very rarely surprised by what I find at a set of ruins or in a catacomb. The bosses rarely impress. It’s all fine - moment to moment, it keeps me more than satisfied, but I don’t think it’s really that different to the much maligned open world games which have lots of things to check off. Sure, the stuff is not pointed out to you here, which makes it more satisfying to find, but the locations and stuff you do there aren’t much more meaningful.

The game is easier than any other Souls game and that’s fine, but I’ve not felt any sense of accomplishment when defeating any of the bosses so far (early days, I know).

So on Altus Plateau I saw our national, stereotypical building in the distance and...

Spoiler

Didn't expect it to become Midsommar with a very, very stretchy boy! Love the weapon it left behind though. :D

went back to the lakes to take revenge on a dragon that one-shotted me 40 hours ago. The fight looked just incredible, tearing about on a horse with Hogwarts and The Magic Faraway Tree above us as the dragon blew blue fire everywhere. Best Game.

Also the weeping dunes in daytime I don't think I've seen that shade of pinky reddish orange used in a game before

I think I might have accidentally killed an NPC today. In a church in Altus...

  Reveal hidden contents

The first time I arrived I was attacked by an NPC invasion, so second time around I tried to attack as they were appearing out of the ground but didn't realise there was something/someone there! And it/he/she died immediately. What did I do?

Spoiler

In the church of vows, if you have Celestial Dew, you can repent/reset relationships with people.

I don't know if that would work where you've BRUTALLY MURDERATED THEM

I think I discovered From's most annoying boss yet down one of the mines...

Spoiler

A trio

Spoiler

of those bastard Crystalians, with rot infused weapons. The spear guy fucks you, while the magic guy fucks you, while the chakra guy fucks you.

Eventually beat them

Spoiler

It's a game of repeated backstab before they can hit you while you hope your spirit summon survives. Used some shield summons to soak up their attention while I took out the caster. Bastards.

Where I am now there’s four of them who attack together, and they aren’t bosses…

im just gonna chuck out my boss "cheeseing" strat. First you need a very specific summon:-

Spoiler

Mimic

Then you need the pulley crossbow. And bleed bolts...

Then, make sure you have the crossbow and bleed bolts equipped when you summon...

Ridiculous bleed damage for the win!

My vigor is about 30 and he can almost kill me with one hit!

Yeah, it made it tricky. My HP is something like 450, I figured that there was no point increasing it at this stage now as he would still mess me up even if I put another 5 levels into it. I do have a talisman that increases a bunch of stats including vigour but also increases the damage I take too. I decided the best course of action at this point was to try not get hit.

What was your approach? Did you melee him? I've seen some solo no hit fights on youtube but that must have taken hours and hours of practice.

I was getting absolutely nowhere using my Uchi (like 5 or 6 backstabs on the magic one didn't break her shell). Apparently clubs and hammers and stuff are much better so I'm going back at lunchtime to smash them.

Yep - been using that when one handing, and the Zweihander L2 stomp and uppercut when 2 handing.
