Ha ha, makes sense now. The other day someone asked how to get up there and @robdood was all like "you can climb up there, that's what I did." Yesterday I looked at the giant cliff and thought well, I'll give it a go! I failed to climb it.

Haaa sorry man.  There's just too much map to remember it all!!

Actually that's not true, because just liek a normal Souls game, I'm pretty sure the map has already seared itself into my memory.  However, the time I unlocked the grace points along the west side of the Lakes was during a work call, surprisingly that's the exploration I remember the least!  Won't be doing that again.  ER deserves my full attention! Work? Not so much :D

There's one NPC questline/series of events which I have completely knackered, involving a certain Trusty character.

Spoiler

I'd completely missed Patches during my initial exploration of Limgrave, but gathered he was there from people talking about him, so I went back for a scout around. Found his cave (and another cave, and a new grace point. Lol I was so sure I'd done everything in Limgrave as well) and found his chest. He attacked me when I opened it. Thing is, I was wielding a Grafted Blade Greatsword +7 with 50 strength. Perhaps a tad over levelled for when you're 'supposed' to have this encounter. It took 3 R1s to kill him. Between the second and third hit he went "no, wait!" Err, sorry man, already pressed the button. Oh well, there's always ng+

Does anyone else think it's a bit odd that the Academy is the only (that I know of so far anyway) area that is seperated from the main map by what I presume are hidden loading screens? I wont deny that the magic seals are thematically appropriate, but given that the game can let you into somewhere like Stormveil Castle seamlessly, I dont see any technical reasons why the Academy would be different. Pretty sure it's smaller than the castle. Maybe it has some non-euclidean geometry to its layout?

Do you just mean how it teleports you when you use the gate?  It's weird for sure, but the world still seamless connects.. try running back down the way... :)

I still have yet to complete the inside of Stormveil Castle (I'm at the grace point after the one on the cliffs) so I'm waaaaay behind many of you, but despite still being very shit at this game, I genuinely think it's going to be my favourite of all time.

It is a choice rather than a technical reason.

the 'assets' used are very different from anywhere else in the game - maybe that's why - although Stormveil has only two ways in or out from the main overworld - which will also certainly include loading.

Was feeling rather pleased with myself earlier as I managed to Rennala on my second attempt.

Feeling pretty cocky, I thought I’d have a go at an Erdtree Avatar in the west of Liurnia. Bloody thing just won’t die! Had about ten attempts then gave up and went off somewhere else. I’m hoping it’s one of those things where I’ll have a go tomorrow and do it no problem.

Still loving it overall. So much to do and see!

Query - I'm a Dex/ int build and having a great time, but still using the sword uchigatana. Is it worth continuing to upgrade this or wait for another? Only just found some smithing stones 3, already have 4 and 5 so can probably level it quite a bit...

Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella

I’m using a +25 Uchi for endgame stuff and it’s still incredible. There’s other katanas but by the time you find ones better than it you’ll be rolling in smithing stones.

Beat them second go.

I think it’s more of a four kings situation with a shared lifebar and respawning bosses.

It's funny watching people stream this on Twitch. I just saw one guy fight the boss from the torch lighting exploits underground and he was clearly underlevelled and using an axe that hit for fuck all and half the time it missed. He was banging his head against it for ages. I've seen other streamers get there several levels later and just whack it in two minutes, no bother. I was feeling a bit sorry for the first guy, but then he went and did it and he was shaking and it clearly gave him a great sense of achievement. Two minute guy probably doesn't even remember the fight. I'm not saying it's wrong to play one way or the other, just that the difficulty can vary wildly.

Well, I was really struggling against the first Banished Knight in Stormveil for ages and eventually just decided to bugger off and do some other stuff. Upon my return, I snuck up on him and used my Blood Slash skill then piled into him with my Twinblade, and he was finished off in just a few seconds!

I have to work out a good balance between offence and defence, and blocking versus rolling. I'm fine with this for enemies that are lower than my abilities, but not for ones that put up a proper fight!

I'm finding this since I picked up the ice axe. NPC invaders that would have been a real challenge before are down in four stomps now. There's only so many times you can shout "eat my frost!" before the novelty starts to wear off. I miss that heart-pumping down-to-the-wire feeling of a proper fight.

I'm 67. With a +15 main weapon. That roughly the same as you?

Cheers for the other replies too folks. Will keep having goes at him in between other stuff 👍

I actually can’t remember. I was 56 when I started attempting Radahn and maybe grabbed a couple more levels. I’d have to check. I did Rennala at that I think.

Did you just level up loads in the Academy? I had a feeling we were closer.

I've been trying to work out how to get on the plateau on the large South Western peninsular for absolutely bloody ages. When I finally work it out or end up there via other means it's going to be FRICKIN' SWEET.

This has been me lol. I don’t want to look it up though!

My second bunch of go’s at Rennala that I streamed probably had viewers banging their heads against a wall. I was clearly making dumb mistakes cos I was tired.

Logged in after a nap and got her in two. Wasn’t streaming. Typical.

you know that thing that the best types of games like this do, where you think you're in some kind of secret area or a side-questy area and working your way through that - but then it turns out to be where you're supposed to go ALL ALONG.  Love that.

  Reveal hidden contents

On a hunt for stones and stuff, I explored a mine/cave system - lots of bats and quite a few sirens, got to the top and fought a big dragon boss (I needed summons, I don't mind - I enjoy it!) - and then I find myself outside the capital!

On the academy

  Reveal hidden contents

Felt pretty small compared to Stormveil - although exploring the rooftops was fun.  Can't quite defeat Bayonetta's final form yet but summons, but I'll get there tonight methinks.

Oh shit. Is he this secret way in people keep going on about? I farmed that area for stones way back but left him because he two shot me lol.

I'm getting really pedantic about not losing my runes :D. But yeah I must have levelled a bit.. although was in my 60s for Renala. Congrats on getting her!

Finally found a boss I can dodge! I'm really liking the Evergaol fights (moral implications aside). Left my shield and shirt at the bonfire and managed to do Alabaster Lord without taking damage in my pyjamas 8-)

I think I must fuck about and then die too much lol. Levelling has really slowed down. I’m doing something wrong.

I wish I could relax about losing runes as I'd probably have a much easier time.  I'm not in a massive rush to level up, so tend to only level up after I've beat a boss or a mini boss, but when I've got a few thousand runes on me I become timid about entering unknown areas / doorways in case I lose them.  It feels such a relief when I find a merchant I can buy something theoretically useful from (like a spell I will never use) and get down to close to 0 runes, then I can fearlessly explore again.
