What's the consensus on where to go after Liurnia: Caelid or the Atlus Plateau? I've already explored some of both, although I went to Caelid pretty early on and just did a lot of smash and grab suicide runs to get items.

Altus. It’s where the game points you for a reason!

Can someone give me a *super gentle* hint as to how I've managed to miss the route into Altus?

Some info on what I've done so far..

Spoiler

Rinsed all of Limgrave, peninsula and lakes as far as I can tell. The only way north / onwards seems to be behind a huge lift, I only have one half of the medallion needed to activate it! Should I have found the whole thing by now?

I've just done the 'get eaten by the virgin at bottom of academy' thing and arrived in volcano manor. Did some limited exploring in what felt like an outside edge of a dungeon, but eventually fought a dual-virgin boss and seem to be able to explore that area.

My only other option is Caelid, which doesn't actually seem too bad as I'm rocking +14 weapons by this point.

Please be gentle, like tell me I need to go look around somewhere again, or something!

Ugh. 8th go on General Radahn and I got his health down to his name in the second phase.

Do you think I should level more? I’m lvl 56 with 366 damage and 760 HP.

8th go and nearly killing someone is good going! I've spent a solid hour or two learning bosses in my souls game history, as long as you keep a good frame of mind and try and learn from each encounter than level shouldn't matter.

Take a look at the medallion description in your inventory.

Or!

Look for an alternative route to the plateau near the 'official' route.

From what I’ve just done/seen, there are two routes.

The one I did was by staying low in Liurnia…

Spoiler

There's a dead end ravine in the NE of the lakes. You could try exploring up there if you can't yet operate the lift 🤔

Radahn tip:

  Reveal hidden contents

He's very weak to cold and their is a good ashes of war that does cold damage.

Didn't even get to see his second phase.

Yeah, I saw that tip actually. I was just looking into another weapon as I can’t add ashes to my Bloodhound Fang.

The level design in (Altus Plateau legacy dungeon spoiler)

Spoiler

Leyndell, Royal Capital

After 140 hours I begin to wonder whether the game could have anything else up its sleeve to wow me with, and Miyazaki just calmly smiles and loads a bullet of sheer fucking awesomeness into his game design gun and blasts it right through the centre of your brain. Unbelievable.

Gone back to Sellia crystal tunnel? The one with the fokkin prawns? There’s some there iirc

The prawn wizards? I’ve cleared that out. Was mostly just 4s for the sombers. Unless the mobs drop them.

Would the Claymore be a good alternative Sword I can add ashes to? Thinking about not just this fight but other times. Seems a shame not to use any of the ashes.

Claymore or great sword, both great. I personally used the great sword (preferred the move set) until I started getting the really good strength scaling ones. You can put whatever you like on both.

For somber smithing stones 5

When you say the moveset do you mean “Upward Cut”? I the guy on the speed run used a move like that; so it’s not an ashes of war? Cos I added Chilling Mist to this Claymore and the description is sitting in the same place as the cut move.

I levelled the Claymore and another curved sword to +3 each to compare stats. Both at 162 + 55 so not sure how to even differentiate between swords.

No, the great sword and claymore have different normal and heavy attacks, too. It’s confusing, because the claymore is classed as a great sword, and the great sword is classed as a colossal sword, but they swing differently. They also scale differently. Great sword ends up with an A in strength, claymore only a B.

If two swords have the same damage and scaling (and I doubt they do once you level them further), then go with the move set you prefer. Or the looks.

Yeah for me it’s one of the most amazingly designed areas in any from game, just wonderful.

Gah, I'm sure I just needed another bleed pop to secure the win on my last attempt. It's so easy for your health to vanish from a glancing blow...

FG down!

Spoiler

I think if he's doing something that gives you a few seconds and the fire orbs are out it can be good to just nip over with Torrent and get them out of the way! I ended the fight with one bleed pop that left him with a pixel or two of health that I could chop away at. (Also it's pretty cheeky that the tracking fire orbs stay out after he's gone!)

I didn't break down any strategies quite like I had to with Radahn and Margit - this fight was a bit of a mess tbh. The only things I really took note of were the worse unblockable attacks (the snow toss, the stomp...)

Great rune chat. (Boss spoilers obv)

Spoiler

Why would you ever use Rhedan's rune when Godrick's is just flat out better?

I suspect Rhedan's will be useful in late game, once your HP and MP doesn't increase much from 5 points in their respective attributes.

I'm level 70 odd but right now Godrick's is vastly better.

Maybe I beat Rhedan too early lol

You should definitely have more than one weapon on the go imo.

I like to have at least a 'standard', 'slash', and 'strike' weapon to cover all enemy weaknesses, then mix and match ashes for elements that might help.

Ohh okay. That’s the R2 attack, right? Yeah, Claymore pierces.

I’m torn. I’m currently farming tens of thousands of runes quickly to buy the smithing stones I’m missing, and applying them to level up *A* sword. Claymore is +5 already.

Guess I’ll keep investing in this one.

Oh, you’re on about the Grafted one? I thought just the Lordsworn. Yeah, I’ve not got the strength to wield that cunt yet

No, there’s a colossal sword just called “greatsword”. Requires 31 strength to 1 hand.

https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Greatsword

You can’t change the ash on the grafted one.

Also, don’t forget the strength requirements is what you need to use it with one hand, you can use it earlier if you two hand it.

On the subject of

Spoiler

Rhedan

I feel like in that area I did this weird sequence break:

Spoiler

I warped in via a portal rather than going up by the front gate. There were no enemies around other than two big liondogs in a courtyard. After I beat Rhedan, then the banquet room became a boss room, AND when I tried to have a look around the front gate, this time it was teeming with enemies, got in by the side, and did a bit of exploration as loads of doors were now open around the castle. But in some cases I was coming up behind enemies, so it feels like all this only "activated" if you ride up to the front gate, or it really was after beating Rhedan all the trash moves in, as the "festival" is over. Or I had done a cool sequence break with the portal.

Or it's a bug.

Elden Ring
