Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Announced

It feels like all I have done over the last week is work and play Elden Ring; it has completely overwhelmed me (in a good way!).

3 of the main bosses are down, and I'm just about ready to move on - north of the lakes is my next destination. I have absolutely no idea what I'll find there.

What a game!

The whip tip for Leonine Misbegotten that surfaced on Eurogamer is legit. Beat that sod with virtually no effort last night after many previous deaths. Not my proudest victory but I'm not adverse to killing fat enemies stuck in doorways either.

The whip is good for him by the looks of it. Found out after knocking him shitless with Rock Sling.

Bounced off a few bosses on Tuesday and felt a bit beaten up, but returned yesterday to beat two of them without too many deaths! I remember this from Dark Souls, sometimes you just need a break and to come back refreshed.

Red Wolf of Radagon

Spoiler

Did struggle a bit with this one. Projectiles being fired at you at the same time as you're being attacked. Plus a super quick boss with a fast moveset and swipes with subtle variety in timings and chains. A really ugly fight this one where I tried to use some Ashes of War on my shield that gave me a little moment of invincibility. I thought it would be useful for the projectiles. Mixed results to be honest. But an important example of the fact that sometimes if you have enough healing you can just muddle your way through a fight.

Also I read a post yesterday about switching to a light load with a fast roll (I think it was @Mike S ??) anyway I thought I'd give it a go! Not for the boss the post the post was referring to, I took one look at that second form and noped out of there extremely quickly! Not touching that again for a while. But instead for a poison heavy mini-boss in Linurnia I was having trouble dodging quick enough. Poison reducing talisman also coming in clutch!

I cheesed a challenge for an awesome talisman in Caleid after following some excellent advice. I am very pleased.

Giant jar with three summons to kill for an awesome equip load talisman. Wait near a dip in the corner at the edge, let them roll off trying to get you.

I can't get this to work. Is it

a specific dip in a specific corner? If so, which one?

Did it work as a strategy?  I took a quick look at the spolier but the video name shows it to be a boss I don't think I've encountered yet so didn't watch it.

I have just spent half an hour of my lunch having a really chilled trot around the lakes which has to be just about the most beautifully evocative and atmospheric game environments I can recall in many a year. It is also an area that really changes mood with the changing time of day/light/etc. From lovely blue skies to shards of light breaking through trees in the evening to moody mist to night time and everything in between it is a real treat for the eyes.

I ended up spending fifteen minutes failing to find the third wise beast and am baffled how FROM could have hidden it in what I assume to be a relatively small area. The three I found at an earlier location were pretty straightforward but I must have ridden around this location fifteen times and cannot spot the elusive last one. I'll resume with that later as it makes a change from high stress combat. The reward better not be a spell or such...

Yeah I think so! At first my roll didn't feel too different, but I was definitely dodging better than before. Might just have been improved reactions / learning the moveset a bit more. At the very least it helped psychologically! It also prompted me to take a look at my gear which I hadn't really been too bothered about up until now.

Aah, good!

I find it a really  useful tactic against hard hitting, one or two shot kill, bosses that smash through heavy armour regardless. It’s not only the speed of the roll but also that you can get more rolls in that I like as it allows for a quick escape when needed.

I'm finding the sheer openness of the game a bit overwhelming, to be honest. It reminds me a bit of old RPGs like Ultima, Rings of Power or the Faery Tale Adventure, where you start off in one part of a huge open world and can just wander off wherever you like. When I played them back in the day, I'd always find that scale and lack of a direction a bit daunting, and in this, the fact that the world is so big and detailed and the way that open world bits are relatively easy to push through means that it's absolutely exhausting at times.

I almost want there to be some gating, just to make it a bit more manageable. There are a couple of bits where it feels like there should be more of a roadblock, like the bridge to the weeping peninsula to the south or the broken causeway and castle to the north, but you can just go straight through or around them. I feel like my brain is overflowing with Elden Ring.

The crazy thing is, there is some gating. I’ve hit three hard gates so far, and two soft ones where it seemed I couldn’t progress without doing something but actually there was a way around it. The game is just huge.

I’ve been making and discarding to-do lists on Post-Its. I recently completed a boss encounter so right now I’m planning to:

- look into restoring the Great Rune of the guy I just defeated

- go see Enia about Remembrance stuff

- see if the last site of grace I discovered goes anywhere

But before that, my notes were on the boss attacks with long recovery that I could capitalise on, or potential elemental weaknesses. And so on.

Unrelated, but I will buy the first next-gen console that has an annotations/notes feature I can bring up in the middle of a game. :P

I’ve got notes on my phone. When I’m working or reading this thread or on Reddit I make notes of things I think of to do, then when I sit down to play I work through them. The beauty is that it’s not a giant list like a Bethesda game, it’s just the things I want to do and think are important.

I eventually beat HER, after stopping summoning, and just using mimic! So much less health haha.

Got the penultimate on second go, and last, on 2nd go!

Now time to peruse the wiki and pick up any caves i missed. then ...maybe a break before NG+ haha

Is it straight into NG+ like previous games or do you have chance to mop up world etc?

Same as dark souls 2 and 3,pops up with an option, if you choose no you can do it at round table

So the past few nights I have made some more progress in the lakes main quest, explored the eastern lakes and taken an unwanted trip to elsewhere. Loving it!

Spoilers for lakes and an unwanted trip:

Spoiler

My current location in the Academy was the second grace site, just before the graveyards. I reached the waterwheel and took a number of deaths trying to kill the ghostly, gravity using undead guy over the bridge, eventually winning once I learned his dodge patterns. Next I took the waterwheel down, and sure enough, true to Patches word, there was an iron maiden. Now any person with a modicum of Souls history knows that Patches' promise that going inside an Iron Maiden will telThieport you to the base of the Erdtree is bullshit. So I fought it as any sane person would do - and it ate me.

To my surprise, after 'You Died', I reappeared at Volcano Manor! So the little shit hadn't been completely lying! Pretty cool area, lava flows everywhere. I tried teleporting out, but I was trapped. So began a rather painful series of deaths to the vampire bats as I hopped over lava streams. I was seriously underlevelled for these guys, and could easily die in their swooping combos. I eventually made it into the cave to the left, vented my frustrations on the fire slugs and dropped down to the cool underground cavern where some part of the manor still stood in a lava lake. The first enemy there was very remeniscent of some notable Bloodborne DLC enemies. Thinking myself clever, I dropped down onto stone columns fallen across the lava before exploring the manor part, looking for shinies and making dangerous jumps over the lava. I did find some shinies, and a cave leading further down, with a floor trap. Sod it, lets go down.

The cave I fell into led to a big cavern and unfortunately the boss music came on and lo and behold, 2 iron maidens to fight. Oops. I quickly got stuck in a corner and ran over. Now I had to start all the way from the beginning with the bats. After more deaths getting back to the lava lake, I explored the manor part, only to find a grace site just up the steps. Gah!

Before teleporting away, I tried the iron maidens a few times. No dice, they do way too much damage and I do barely anything to them. So it was time to wave goodbye to the manor and head back to the Academy. First though I paid a little visit to Patches camp site to see what he had to say for himself. Of course, the smirking liar has moved on! In the Academy, I took the waterwheel up and came across a little mining operation. This is the second time I've seen the zombie noble-types doing work, though last time it was Godrick soldiers in command. Another grace point lay in a side room. This passage led me to library corridors, where I had some trouble with a whole bunch of mages and a giant pot. After a bunch of tries I managed to take them out one by one and bumrush the remaining 3 mages. Up the stairs on the right were more mages and library stuff. A message by a locked door in the last room had mentioned secret passages, so I rolled around the suspicious bookcases and sure enough found my first Elden Ring illusory wall, leading to some pot enemies and some shinies, coming out at the locked door where I'd found the message.

Back upstairs I found a boss door. Steeling myself I entered to find a lovely boss chamber from the loading screens and a giant red wolf with homage to Sif. This guy really hurt though and cast annoying homing magic missiles. Most of his normal attacks did over half health damage and the biggest ones one-shot me. I grinded against the wolf for quite a while (without summons), but was just burning through flasks and kept dying. My damage against him was pretty low but even getting in attacks was very difficult due to his speed and leaping. Eventually I decided I was a bit too under-levelled.

Next I explored all the other places the waterwheel could take me, finding some spear-wielding marionettes and a new spirit summon for them. I also went up against the iron maiden at the bottom again... almost immediately got eaten.... and transported to Volcano Manor again. Doh! No worries, I'll just port back. Nope - I'm trapped again! Grraaaahh!

After grinding my way back down to the volcano grace point, I ported back tried the iron maiden fight again. This time I was much more cautious, so the fight took ages due to the maiden's huge health pool. I had to do some last-second dodges to avoid getting pulled inside once again, but on the plus side if you do dodge, hitting the snakes in the maiden does extra damage. Finally I felled it, and climbed up the crystals to a cool little shrine suspended above the void.

It was time to explore elsewhere and level up a bit to stand a chance against the red wolf. One place I'd been meaning to check out was the lakes south of the generic merchant campsite. Right at the back I found a hidden cave dungeon, full of poison, big flowers and the mushroom poison mages. At the end of that was a tough mini-boss, some kind of infected knight who you have to fight in a big poison pool, so you stick to the edges where possible. It was rough because he has a few moves that pretty much kill you, especially a charging impale that nearly one-shots me and also gives you scarlet rot. After repeated attempts I did get him down though.

Next I checked out a cave dungeon I'd found earlier to the east of Patch's old campsite. This was a pitch dark crystal cave full of demi-humans. The upper route has you fighting gangs of demi-humans leading to a demi-human leader in close confines, which took me a while to beat. You get some shinies but its a dead end. The real way to go is down into the chasm below the start, to a crystal-lined cave with some magic spitting snails. And a boss door, which led to.... the Blood Hound Knight, again? I'd already fought this guy in a tough Evergaol battle. So this should give me an advantage, right? Sadly this corporeal version had more health and did much more damage than his previous incarnation. It took a while for me to re-learn his attack patterns, and the fight is also trickier because the cave is very dark. It took me a long time to win, made more annoying by the run-back to the boss door, which involves dropping down multiple ledges where its quite easy to kill yourself. Why isn't there a stake of Marika in the bottom cave? Grr. Anyway, the boss cave leads out to the other side of the lakes, to a little shack where a solider lady cradles a dead wolf, mistaking me for people who had come after a pendant and killed her wolf. Now the Bloodhound did drop a talisman but I don't know if that's what she was referring to, and she didn't have more dialogue to go off. Bit of an enigma, this lady.

For the next exploration, I'd not been to the east of the lakes at all, on the raised area with the highroad running north/south. So that seemed like a good place to start. I ported to the grace site at the lake 'gorgeous view' Stormveil exit, to find two NPCs waiting there. Wut? One was a blind girl on a pilgrimage to become a finger maiden. I'm sure I met her somewhere earlier but can't remember where. Anyway, I had some lovely squishy grapes to give her (from the ghost you find in the exit from Stormveil Castle), and she thanked me. The other NPC was none other than the demi-human chap I'd given hope at the Coastal Cave, who insisted upon becoming my personal tailor. Now I could get armour alterations for free - cheers dude!

From up here I found a series of those giant gravestones in the eastern cliff wall I could use to drop down to the ridge below. Heading west to the Stormwind broken bridge, I passed some soldiers and found a giant surrounded by bodies. This guy was a bit more scary than the average giants so after battering him a bit I led him up the hill to the soldiers, where they dutifully joined the fray and we took him down. I finished off the survivors. Interestingly the soldiers were from the Academy, so the lakes are clearly their territory.

Heading north I battled puppets and soldiers, and explored a bunch of ruins down towards the lake shore. I found the blind girl again and gave her some more tasty eyes I'd gotten in the nearby soldier camp. One of the ruins had a teleporter that takes you to the Academy Glintstone gate, another shortcut you could stumble upon I guess. Over on the Eastern side, a downward path going south led past some marionette ambushes to a catacomb. This turned out to be a right bitch, with big beefy and diseased axe guys, like the one in the Stormveil main courtyard, who have loads of HP and hurt like hell. I also couldn't figure out where to go for aaages, until I finally noticed you could drop down near the start to a basement. But down there is an axe guy you have to fight up close, and I noped out after getting mashed. One for later.

Continuing north I came across two awesome encounters. One was the skeleton boat boss I'd heard mentioned on here, but I'd not envisioned such a bonkers and entertaining boss fight! What an imaginative boss. It wasn't too hard, I used my new marionette summons to help keep the skellies off me, the marionettes are pretty great, they fly around and chuck fire bombs and even do decent damage. The other cool encounter was a battlefield in front of a cave, strewn with the wreckage of war machines. There, a squad of Academy soldiers fights against an ethereal army, with the final boss being a huge giant with a sword who absolutely wrecks everything and has an insane amount of HP. This took a bunch of goes to get through, the trick being to keep the soldiers alive to help gang up on the giant, with lots of people hammering his legs he sometimes falls over for critical hit opportunities. In the end it was just me and one valiant solider fighting against the giant, and I got the last few hits in just after the solider sacrificed himself in my name. Fun.

Through the cave I reached the lake shore and a giant bear to the left, who is way too hard to survive just now. Hanging out at the lake shore was the blind girl again, but this time I didn't have any smooshed eyes to give her, so I flagged her on the map for later. Back to the main ridge, taking the top route leads you past another huge rune tower and bridge to the right, and on the plains a golden patrolling knight who looks really badass. Later I returned here to fight him and it was a hard fight even on horseback. He could one-shot me with some of his stabs. In the end I used a warhammer I only recently found to fight him on Torrent, and finally won, though it was pretty rough for just a random mini-boss wandering around!

Past the knight is the artist's shack with a painting to hunt down the location of. I always like these quests in games, it encourages exploration. Past the artist's shack you can go over the rock formations to cross a chasm and explore the hostile but more lush lands to the north. Here is some sort of fire faction, I cleared a camp of them and some patrolling groups. I love their visuals, their red robes and fire spells are really striking. The big monk knights are very beefy though! I saw one of the flamethrower head machines uphill but didn't want to venture too far that way, so went downhill to the east instead. Down here I found, gaurded by teleporting mages, the entrance to the rune tower, which turned out to be the entrance to some mighty library or something called the Carian Hall or some such, very cool. Feeling like this was a later story area I turned back after seeing the first hall.

North from here stood a lava golem protecting a small temple. The fight was a bit rough but I got him on horseback after some attempts. Inside the temple was a lift going down into an large cave system. At the bottom was a ruin strewn underground river shore, with big hairy bugs on the walls. Yet another new area! After quite easily crossbowing a few of the bugs, the next bug one-shot me with a spit attack, indicating maybe this wasn't the place to be exploring just yet. Instead I went up the river to snag an item by a waterfall and deal with the bug ambush I'd spied in advance. I'll come back here later.

Behind the temple was a grove with two giant bears, and one of those big weird mage orbs rising from the lake. Feeling smart, I managed to put one of the bears to sleep with a sleep arrow (handy to know), and then lured him into the orb. To my disappointment, the orb attacks didn't seem to hit the bear, and the bear wouldn't aggro the orb. I died, and found a little hidden area behind the grove. The grove was another place to come back to, even though there doesn't seem to be much here, I will get my revenge one day!

Remembering something to check, I ported to the Academy entrance and tried out the second glyph in mid-air. Sure enough it teleported me to a different location, across the bridge to the northwest, into a nice pine wooded area. This seemed like some old high road, judging from the statues and the finger maiden there, it is perhaps the road to the capital. I didn't explore much here, just the woods and cliffs, fighting off mounted knights and soldiers. I have to say the knights in this game look fucking superb, the armour designs and liveries are amazing! The finger maiden also talks about a sneaky underground way to the capital, which I wonder if it's the underground river at the temple I found earlier.

With the runes I'd cobbled together from the few nights adventures, I had levelled up a few times, now at about level 36 but with a spread mainly across dex, str and faith. I'd found the warhammer which was good for mounted combat, and just recently a big (normal) sythe, which even at level 0 does good damage. It became my new primary weapon, the other main ones being the Uchigitana, Lordswain Straightsword and Rogiers Rapier. I'd also got the two marionette summons, a resurrecting skelly warrior and a summon for the poisonous land squirts I found in the lake beneath the big bear at the lake shore. I also decided to put a few points into Arcane so I could finally buy a dragon incantation from the dragon temple with one of my dragon hearts - opting for the dragon claw attack, a very slow but big AOE slam that costs a lot of FP. I am still sitting on probably 100s of thousands of runes in rune orbs, I have about 80 of the smallest ones and decent amounts of the larger orbs, but I will save them for when I want to upgrade something or level up a lot for some nasty boss. Right now I feel my power level is fine, tough but a good challenge for the stuff I'm facing right now.

With that all done, last night I returned to the red wolf in the Academy to try again (without summons). This turned out to be brutal, a session that lasted 3 hours of getting pummeled, taking breaks and learning dodge timings. With only a slight HP increase from before, I could survive some of the one-shot attacks but the boss was still incredibly punishing. I forgoed my most powerful attacks (like the straight sword square charge) for the challenge. I wasted a lot of time trying to incorporate the new dragon claw attack into the fight, but it just got me killed again and again, the wind-up for it is so long that it's pot luck whether you get cut down during its cast time. In the end I just gave up on it. This is another really annoying boss where for no reason they have gone back to the bad old bonfire run days - every attempt you have to run through a gauntlet of mages before getting to try again, it's so frustrating and just wastes time for no reason. I was tired (I started at about 11pm) and in the end just put on youtube in the background as I grinded away. Eventually I got the attack patterns down and learned to only take quick, safe hits. I finally claimed victory in the wee hours. It was satisfying but I only really stuck with it because i was in a sort of zombie mindstate, really it would have been better fun to just summon or use my stronger attacks and get it over and done with!

At the end of the night I briefly ventured into the courtyard beyond, battling mages in the upper levels, and getting repeatedly squished by an iron maiden in the main yard. My marionette summons helped out to finally bring his reign to an end, as well as a giant crab- which are still some of the hardest-hitting enemies in the game! With no doors to take, I realised my only option was to jump out over some struts above the void to a broken stairway. I got a rude surprise when a giant cannonball got dropped at the top of the stairway and jumped back to the struts, narrowly avoiding getting splatted. I navigated that classic Souls boulder gauntlet to meet a named knight in a little garden, who parried me and one-shot me. Owch. I tried the knight a few more times but the parry is evil. I could stealth or run past him, but for now instead I took the teleporter in the room just before him, which transported me across the lake to the Eastern ridge, but to a place I'd not been yet.

I appeared in a ruined church, where there was a funny big old tortoise with a papal hat, who dished out some juicy lore about the moon queen and some invading chap, and their marriage or whatever, and the connection between the Academy house and the capital house. I think these characters are two of the demi-gods. I recorded the conversations on video, as I'm sure I'll want to revisit this lore. Other interesting lore nuggets from these sessions have been the sword monuments strewn around chronicling the march of some lady and her army, who might be connected to the puppet armies. Examining the statue in the church, it says I don't have sins, so presumably this is the classic way to rescue your game if you turn NPCs hostile. Outside, I played with the wrong big skeleton in the graveyard, and got annihilated. I'll come back and explore this part of the lakes next session, as it seems like the game is encouraging you to do this area before heading through the knight in the Academy.

Back at the Roundtable, the monk says he might be leaving, although he'd better not before I buy the new lightning incantations I unlocked from the golden knight! A new chap has appeared, with the hilarious name of D, who hunts those who live in death. As I already have some deathroot, he offers to show me where his master is, and marks it on my map. It's in the east of Limgrave in an unexplored part of the map, I haven't even been to that side yet, so maybe now is the time. Rogier also knows D, they used to be friends, but they drifted apart. Finally I upgraded some of my summons to +2 or +3, and a few weapons (+8 is still my highest). There's a few weapons I'm only a few points off that I'm saving shards for, like a cool Faith sythe, and a lance.

So, epic adventures, some very tough challenges and my favourite part being the eastern high road with all its weird and wonderful sights and encounters. Looking forward to finally venturing beyond the western Limgrave map and seeing some of the Eastern part, now I have a reason to go there thanks to D's map. I'll post some of the boss videos later on.

there were no enemies? Just 2 of those lion things in a courtyard. Is this normal? Felt slightly robbed. Also couldn't open most of the doors but it looked like I should've been able to. Is this a bug? I had a wonky door in one of the catacombs that closed after I entered and I can't open it again.

Anyway, Radahn is down. Pretty cool idea for a fight but I definitely cheesed it and feel a bit of regret for not learning it properly. Killed him 3rd go by just summoning all the guys and spamming lightning spear with the occasional horseback driveby. Are people doing him without the summons?

Also discovered on the beach, hopefully it will save someone running up and down the whole thing:

There is a catacomb at the very northern point where the cliff meets the water.

Loved all the messages by the shore with the great view of the moon and sunken ship.

That view ... The area immediately before the fight with Radagn ... There's practically nothing in it (just a bit of beach, a cliffside and a sunken ship in the distance) but it's one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen in gaming.

(The actual most beautiful view I've ever seen in gaming, on the other hand, is the view when you first emerge into Liurnia of the Lakes , and there's loads and loads of stuff in it).

I'm not sure where reviewers got the idea there would be around 100 hours playtime if you did most of what Elden Ring had to offer, its a number I saw touted in a bunch of places. If you have a more meticulous or slow playstyle, or are getting stuck a lot, its definitely way longer than that. I'm on about 80 hours and I'm literally only on the second main dungeon. I've only revealed and explored 3 or 4 parts of the map and there's about half of the map I haven't even touched, and that's without the inevitable map embiggening as I progress. From what other people on here are experiencing it seems to me like it's going to be more like 200 hours or even longer to be thorough depending on how much you dabble in co-op, get stuck on bosses etc. Mad.

Nice to hear someone is getting through it at a similar pace to me :) I'm ~60 hours and I'm at the Academy but not really very far into it. I've spent a lot of time going back over Limgrave and Stormveil trying to figure stuff out & find as much as I can. And I'm sure I've still missed plenty. I've only just realised in the past couple of days that this might take me 150 hours or more. Quite a daunting prospect! I don't play games with that kind of play time very much at all. I've got friends who only get half an hour or an hour to themselves each evening and are playing through - can't imagine tackling it like that!

Yep. 100 hours is practically a speedrun. This is a game to be savoured, obsessed over and lived in, there's no rush or reason to race to the end. And what are you going to play when you eventually do complete it?

Elden Ring 2 of course.

Mad.

85 hours here, and am about where you are. However I've abandoned dungeon 2 for now and am going over old ground, so it'll probably be 100 by the time I head for dungeon 3.

Best £49.99 I ever spent.
