To access the area you have to beat:

  Reveal hidden contents

Radahn

And then in that area you'll find something to finish a quest line for:

  Reveal hidden contents

Ranni

Have no idea who either of those 2 people are so guess I will keep ploughing through for now! Good to know I haven't missed something important though, thanks!

Does anyone know how stats and soft level caps work for a quality build in this? I am boring and so I am using the longsword and double handing - in previous games strength gets boosted and the soft cap is a 40/27 dex/strength mix. Is that still the same?

Personally i wouldn't go the Quality route in this game.

Choose a weapon art you like then spec into one skill when you assign it, changing the parameters. That way you only have to concentrate on pumping one stat.

The hard cap for STR or DEX is 70. I know cause i have 70 DEX and its diminishing returns from here on out.

The easiest way to tell is to watch / keep track of how much your damage improves as you level stats.

That's not what hard cap means though. Hard cap means you either can't upgrade it past there, or upgrading it past there has no effect at all. Do you mean 70 is a soft cap?

I’m liking this but not loving it. The world looks pretty and enticing in a delightfully macabre way and I love some of the incidental detail, you round a corner and there’s a zombie picnic.

I’m finding some of the gameplay just a bit too much of a rehash of dark souls though. I loved bloodborne to death, it mixed both an awesome setting and fighting that rewarded smacking the hell out of everything. This feels pedestrian in comparison, in the same way as dark souls 3, I beat it but didn’t truly love it.

On top of that I’ve had one too many times of knocking a guard to the floor then finding my axe seems to just go through him rather than hit him if he’s at the wrong part of the animation.

Going to plough on though as I’m really loving the world and hope I get a Bloodborne like ‘click’ moment where I realise I’m totally wrong and it’s really awesome.

Well, I was totally wrong, this is awesome. Ditched the shield, switched to rolling to escape stuff and I haven’t looked back, manage to destroy a cave worth of enemies and the boss on the first try and feel like I want to plough my way through the entire map. Some of the visuals are breathtaking.

The aggressive style with roll is the way!!!

I did some farming last night and then just wandered North of Stormveil...for hours and hours. Magnificent.

It's funny, I seem to fall in and out of love with it at times during play sessions but the open world relieves the pressure perfectly. Banging my head against something, aaarrgghh I hate it etc etc , it's winding me up. Stop, reassess and just go do something  more relaxing/exploring and level up. Aaah, I love it again. Genius.

The best part about the game is if you do get wound up you can do the opposite! If you just want a Souls like experience, you can go point to point too.

It is brilliantly made.

The third legacy dungeon is fucking colossal

Is there actually a third legacy dungeon? Seems to me that after you beat what is probably the second dungeon (Academy) you can do the others in any order?

Is there any reason, in fact, that you couldn't do the Academy before you do Stormveil Castle?

Spoilers for convo with "Not Sean Bean" about this in Roundtable:

Spoiler

He seems to assume that you beat Grafter Godrick before you beat the boss of the Academy , but is this always the case? Or does his dialogue change if you do them in a different order?

Hard Cap does not mean END CAP (aka Dex Level 99), it means there is little-to-no-value in levelling any further. Before 70, levelling Dex was giving 3-4 points increase on weapon damage, now its only 1 point, that equals HARD CAP!

'Soft cap' is that tasty sweet-spot on stats for players who want to min/max and keep their build at an optimal capped level (all Souls games before this, it was around SL120 for PvP etc). I imagine the level might be higher for this game.

Carian Study Hall question:

Spoiler

Just fought my way to the rafters. Preceptor Miriam was pretty tasty! Got her in the end.

Anyway, is there a way to make the spiral staircase drop? I'm guessing I need to put something on the pedestal where I first came in? Haven't been to Raya Lucaria yet so I guess I have to go there first.

Not sure about this (been playing RPGs for decades and hard cap has always meant you can't go any higher, to me) but it's probably not that important in the grand scheme of things so happy to agree to disagree!

Just spent my first proper session in the game. Wondered around a lot, did an early boss, stealth-killed my way through one early overworld area like I was playing Deus Ex (which is impressive for a souls game to pull off). Considering restarting before I go any further to do a wretch run.

One niggle, is that I wish you could bind the horse summon to a button/inventory slot seperate from your estus.

Also [tutorial-y boss spoiler]:

Spoiler

while so far everything has been otherwise utterly smooth, did anyone notice when fighting the creepy cat statue thing that the game would drop some of their roll inputs during his hover-smash? I did a few test runs and found it only happened for that attack, and only when very close to me - I'm not sure if is because the camera has issues knowing how to orient you or something?

Who ya gonna trust, "an RPG fan", or me, who has been schooling and jolly cooping Souls games with these wonderful folks of rllmuk since 2009? ;)

You can do just that!

You can assign four items to the pouch so, on an Xbox controller at least, I press Y and up on the d-pad to whistle for the Torrent. This is done on, I think, the equipment screen (only discovered it myself a few days ago so a bit vague, sorry).
