Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Announced

Spent most of last night mopping up bits of Limgrave. The Crucible Knight was exceedingly tough, even with a massively souped up weapon. Just walks through stuff even when you read him right.

Catacomb gargoyles are even more annoying that skeletons, which takes some doing.

I do feel I’ve gone a bit basic with my build on this. Just lobbing even amounts roughly in to vitality, endurance and strength and just using some sword I got early on. All the interesting weapons I’ve picked up I can’t use though. Also have no magic because my intelligence stat is still whatever I started with. Seeing you all post vids with wizzy spells and shit is making me envious.

That’s how I’ve played for about 50 hours now and yeah, it’s started to drag a bit. Going to respec and put points into faith to get some snazzy fire and lightning.

Dude! Good job! You were super cautious but it paid off! The only thing I'd say (and bear in mind I've yet to best this guy) is that you could try use jump R2 as your default punish when he's open. If you want to force enemies to get posture broken in this you have to keep up the pressure too, he seems to have lots of openings that you just waited rather than sticking in a jump attack.

Also! Guard counters man, I haven't tested these on him but he has huge gaps between his attacks, I'd be surprised if you can't interrupt his combos by guard countering after the first hit in a lot of cases.

But still, you got him! Fine work. I appraised this message. Etc 😁

Yeah, guard counters are futile against Crucible knight.  Literally just spent about 80 mins learning and beating him.  So ignore my advice here, lol

So inspired by @John0 and @Jamie John's recent efforts, my turn for the obligatory CK victory video!  Messed up so many times, I had a near perfect fight against him a few times, just those new moves in second phase caught me out (got outright killed by the double swipe thing one time, ouch).  Anyway, was pleased to have him on about the 4th time reaching second phase!

I currently feel like parries are wildly unpredictable, maybe its just me being daft, but some attempts I'd land them every time, others I'd miss every time, then I'd get times like this where it seemed 50/50!  Weird.  But he's down.  Watch my desperation right at the end, lol.  Got the post-fight adrenaline shakes though, that's when you know it's a good boss! :D

Also, not sure if just me, but I really dislike how difficult it is to swap between one and two handed in the heat of the moment now.  You used to be able to 'buffer' it like attacks/rolls, so you could reliably put in the command after combos etc.  Towards the end of the fight against CK, I land a parry, and wanted to switch to two hand so I could use my sword weapon art to finish him as he got up, basically nothing happened and I just did a regular R1 instead. Infuriating.

Inspired by @John0 above, I also decided to give the Crucible Twat another go. And...

Got 'im!

You'll notice my technique is a lot more reckless than John0's very measured, patient play

Fuck, that felt good.

Did you just literally jump attack for the whole fight?  Tank damage and heal?  How many flasks do you have?! lol

I hold triangle then press R1. Works every time.

Is Black flame blade broken? It literally lasts 2 seconds.

Yeah, it's extremely short lived.

I'm at Carian Study Hall and I can't figure out how to get to the tower:

Have gone right to the top and can see some spiral stairs above me that may be able to be lowered down. There is a pedestal at the bottom that says it has a space for an item.

Any hints?

I've had to step away till this evening, but I believe I just got the key for this from finishing a mid/late game area.

To access the area you have to beat:

Spoiler

Radahn

And then in that area you'll find something to finish a quest line for:

Spoiler

Ranni

I've found myself accidentally two handing my shield quite a lot recently! I keep on trying to use my Skill and then I realise I've gone and done it again when nothing happens and the boss knocks me on my arse.

It literally didn't in my video above man.  I know the input, it's just if you do it when not idle it doesn't work. Watch at 4:17, I just ended up doing a normal attack, very annoying!

Not quite, but it was my go to tactic! I found a medallion thing in

Spoiler

Morne

that increases your jump attack damage, so I just thought 'Sod it', equipped the turtle shell shield for increased stamina regen, two handed my weapon and off I went. I had 8 flasks and, as you can see in the video, had used all of them, as well as my physick, by the end of the fight. To say it was tense was an understatement.

Jumping, in general, seems to be a viable defensive tactic in this, thoug, like in Sekiro: each of his thorn stomp attacks you can just jump on the spot to evade (or, even better, jump towards him to squeak a jump attack) and you can just jump forwards over his angel wing swoop, too. I'm not sure if jumping has i-frames, like rolling, but it worked quite well against him.

And congrats on taking him down. You look like you're a lower level than I was :)

And separately, just explored the Ainsel River Well...

Spoiler

Fooking ants! *Shudder*

Thankfully, they're pretty fragile and stupid. I popped their queen good! Felt a bit guilty about it, but fuck em.

This then led to

Spoiler

a whole new underground area.

How big is this game?!

I know - I know - that Souls nerds pride themselves on doing things solo. But man does it feel like the most awesome shit when you summon the whole crew.

Getting there - I can reach phase two without the summons, which may help. Small tip to get him to his second phase pretty quickly:

Spoiler

If you go in with a bleed weapon ("passive effects: cause blood loss buildup") you can take huge chunks off his lifebar as he's quite susceptible to it. Although for my character it did mean dropping a point into Dexterity...

Also, his mobility is a killer, but things like the big shock attack leave him stationary for a while...

So

Spoiler

I went back to Stormveil Castle for a stroll, see if I missed anything, and I realised the prick that was stealing my souls was still there (found him where I put an end to Godrick). Some revenge quickly ensued.

Second big boss is down but I haven't fully explored the lakes area yet. I still feel like I'm only just starting out, even though I'm 30 hours in and level 50. Onwards.

Does the game give you any indication that character is going that? I missed it if it did. I didn't kill him, so as far as I know he might still be doing it. I may have to take a trip back to the castle...

Dude nice parrying! I've kinda stopped trying in this game to be honest but you had the timing right way more than not. Might be inspired to practice more after that! Looked super satisfying.

It's such a cool boss. I definitely could have been more aggressive in mine like you say but I feel that's not my strength in these games. Often I just feel like if I'm patient enough then I'll win eventually haha (adapting to Bloodborne was a bit of a rough ride :D). I do kinda love the tension of a long flight though.

One thing I'm still struggling with is knowing when an enemy is going to follow up an attack with another attack. That's why in that CK vid sometimes I'm just standing there while he's open. It's because previously I've been caught by an attack there and I'm waiting for it. It's probably to do with my positioning and the bosses stamina but I'm still not great at reading that. It was especially true with Margit as well. I realise it's not random (and I know we've been over that in this thread ;)) but I still haven't fully got the hang of it. It'll come though I think.

Keep the boss videos coming guys!

I'm a bit scared about what seems to be happening to Rogier in the Roundtable Hold...

Spoiler

He's got a blanket over his legs which is buzzing with flies, and you can see thorns poking out here and there. I spoke to D about him, and he said something about 'The Mark of the Centipede' and how he's rotting from the inside out.

Fucking grim. :(

I just checked and I am a worrying 43.5 hours in (and about Lvel 43 too, which is nice) and have also just defeated the second proper boss so it's likely going to be 100+ hours to get to the end at this rate.

My mission today is to gain access to parts of the castle I can see but haven't been into, especially as I need to see what is at the bottom of the very deep lift I have fallen down several times.

I love it when you get a new weapon and totally smash through a group of enemies with no hassle, leaving you feeling like a boss, then you meet a bigger enemy that kills you in two hits.

Nothing more humbling 😆

I've discovered my first boss that I have absolutely no chance whatsoever of defeating with my current stats/equipment. In a cave in Caelid, north east of

Spoiler

The Church of the Plague grace site, it's called Sellia Hideaway. The boss is

Spoiler

Three Crystallian warriors, one with a staff, one with a spear and one with a ringblade. Oh and all their attacks cause scarlet rot buildup. They only take damage from strike attacks, but that's ok because I have a big hammer. It doesn't do a lot of damage, but it does some, unlike my main weapon (Lordsworn's Heavy Greatsword +7)

Thing is, they all have fast combo attacks, and when they all decide to do them at the same time, there's no way you're avoiding them. I try siccing my trusty Banished Knight Oleg on them and he doesn't even survive long enough for me to kill one of them, which would make things much easier.

I think either there's some trick with them, like there's a key item you find which drastically weakens them, or I'm going to have to level up A LOT. I'm currently level 52, but it's nowhere near high enough.

It's really disheartening. It's the first time I've thought "I've had enough of this now" while playing Elden Ring.
