The candelabra in Mistwood Forest...

Spoiler

I'm sure on my first time through I saw foot prints leading away from it, but then I got into a tangle with a giant bear. I've come back again now but there's nothing much going on. Any hints?

Think I'm gonna have to leave Rennala for a bit and go exploring until my vigor is higher, her attacks in the second phase just one-shot me if I get hit. The run back + her pretty much threat-free first phase are too long and boring just to get killed for a single mistake.

This is where the open world comes into its own because if this was a traditional Souls game I'd be gritting my teeth right now at the prospect of either trying over and over or grinding for Souls in areas I'd already been to. But no more!

The first phase is actually really quick and easy -

Spoiler

you only need to attack the singing/golden Creepy vampire girls - ignore all the others. Each gold one you kill damaged the shield on Rennala. Do that until she falls, hit her, run away when she starts to glow, repeat. Should take less than a minute and you shouldn’t really get hit, except maybe from the odd stray book.

Managed to clock my first hour or so in the today (been busy with work up until now), and so far feels great.

First Off....no performance issues. Yet. Wish I could say why, I'm on pc.

Secondly, maybe it's just because I havent played Souls in years but this feels much more immediately overwhelming but not negatively so, which is how souls should be. I'm not sure I even got that from DS1, as that had been out a while before I got to it.

So far I've done the tutorial cave, wandered around the overworld a bit. Avoided scary horse-guy, found one of those beardy giants who look like they've been left in the fridge too long. Killed him via repeatedly stabbing him in the grundle.

Avoided the freaky spaghetti monsters on the beach, got lulled into a fight with beach-knight, which I won ('friend ahead' my arse). Watched the sun go down over the water, praised it. Got drawn towards some disturbingly persistent screaming up a nearby hill - found no enemies, but think it may have been coming from some crucified corpses. I mean, they looked dead to me, but it's souls, so.....

Mostly trhough, just went around being highly entertained by the player messages. Oddly enough I had all the online stuff turned off (because I'm antisocial) but I assume that doesnt stop the messages or bloodstains? I dont remember how that worked in DS.

oh, +1 btw to whoever complained about 'open map' and close map' being different buttons. :D

I have been offline since I started (also on PC) and have not seen a single player message or bloodstain which is just as I like it. The devs left one or two guidance messages in the tutorial area but that is all.

It was finally time to bite the bullet and explore Caelid. Fucking hell. The creatures there are nightmare fuel. I explored

Spoiler

Gael Fort (btw I've notice several character/place names which are re-used names from DS3. Hmmm) and found a teleporter to another part of Caelid, where there was a castle but the gate was closed. I couldn't find a way in. Am i able to get in here or do I need to find another route in?

Interesting, I had a couple of settings switched to offline but evidently missed something.

I had thought a couple of cheeky messages could be the devs meme-ing ('could it be a dream? behold, jumping!'), but there was enough finger/butthole to dissuade me of that idea.

For fuck’s sake! Not used any of the Ashes stuff yet or any of the LT moves. 61hrs played and just discovered an inventory menu that allows use to balance your flask charges. Could have had an extra health flask charge the whole time I’ve been playing.

Still discovering new stuff in areas I’ve traipsed all over. The game is just mind boggling!

Yeah, 40 hours in and I'm no better at avoiding this. I'm watching Limmy play on Twitch and he's constantly doing it too.

I have a talisman which gives you a pretty significant health refill when you get a backstab, riposte or other critical hit. Really useful for some places like stormveil. But also adds a bit of risk/reward. Do you use the alternative path avoiding a tough enemy or do you take on the enemy hoping for a health top up if you can get a critical.

I've been bogged down in the same section for ages but loving the gradual progress through it.

Just checked out of curiosity. Zero speed runs so far.

They're already routing on the Speedsouls Discord. Some of the skips via jumping/Torrent are already mental.

Awesome thanks. I fully expect that talented bunch to have runs uploaded within the next month or so and then to keep changing as things get found. Should be good.

The amount of decent gear I’ve now got is obscene, especially seeing as I’m not going to use any of it. The sword I’ve got is a beast and also got......

Spoiler

a Talisman that constantly regenerates health.

Not bothering with armour at the moment, just 2 handing the sword. The amount of Runes I have is ridiculous. Starting to wonder what crazy level I could jump to if I spent them all.

I have lost count of the amount of hosts i have tried to help with that boss that couldn't figure out the first phase. 😩

It's possible they suffered from a multiplayer bug where the gold ones don't appear. It happened on the Eurogamer stream. Although I don't think you'd see them either...

Oh, also can I just say how much more impressed I am with the character creator than I expected to be.

A part of me was secretly disappointed that they'd improved to the point of having a boringly 'good' looking face-maker, but as it turns out they have somehow managed to do that while still allowing for a fair degree of the absolute monstrosities and circus freaks I'm used to. I appreciate that it still takes a little finesse to get results from.

Ive nothing of note to add to the thread, I'm not reading it for fear of spoilers and I don't have an interesting war story to contribute. Just wanted to say that Stormveil Castle could literally be a game all of its own. It's a masterpiece and deserves to sit alongside any area of any of the entire Souls/Sekiro/Bloodborne lineage. It's layer after layer after layer of madness. This is going into videogaming legend.
