I put a skill on my sword but have to remove my shield to use it because my shield has a parry skill? Are folks using skills on their weapons not using shields or using shields without skills? Because I think the shield skill overrides it?

Im doing something stupid aren’t I?

You can buy'no skill' from the warmaster which if applied to your shield means you use your sword skill. Either that or double hand your sword

Shields have their own ashes: some are the usual parry, but there are others, too (shield bash, buffing yourself etc).

Your ash skill is bound to left trigger/L2 which, if you’re using a shield, uses your shield. To use the skill for your main hand weapon you either have to remove your shield entirely, or put it on your back and two hand your weapon. Alternatively, you can buy an ash called “no skill” which removes the shield one and allows you to use your main hand skill using L2/left trigger.

Personally, I just don’t use a shield.

I couldn't sleep earlier so I made an astrologian. Teleported to the ball farm. 90 minutes later I'm level 37 and have gotten myself a nice new staff. Magic boi is fun. Next stop some new spells.

What's a sensible melee weapon backup for a mage?

Cant think of any off the top of my head as I’m not looking out for them specifically, but there are definitely melee weapons that scale with int…

Also of course mobs can be drawn into open world boss fights now. Bet that guy wishes he hadn’t been though

Not mobs but yesterday I fought the boss in your video and was highly entertained by the occasional sounds of sheep baaing amongst all the chaos!

And, yes, baaing is a word (i checked).

And don't you get the option to add INT scaling using certain ashes of war?

If ever a time needed a thought-dominating game like this, it's now.

I've got so much to say about this game and no time to do so. If this doesn't get an Edge 10, I'll be amazed. It's not quite an Edge 6 though...

Any hints on where I should be heading next after clearing Stormveil Castle?

Spoiler

I've tried following the arrows from the sites of grace on the map but don't seem to have arrived anywhere useful - I get to one big, magically locked gate (gate of night, or something) very far north. Obviously need an item or something to open it. After I killed the grafted guy, the UI text seemed to suggest I should be looking for a tower to activate the item he gave me, or something, and the item text suggests looking behind Stormveil for the tower. Had a good look around there but not found it yet!

There you go - a katana that is C in int. from magma worm.

Crystal Sword is a straight sword that has D intelligence scaling. I think that's the best intelligence scaling I've seen for a melee weapon. Only issue is that you can't change its weapon art or apply resins to it.

You can find it in

Spoiler

Village of the Albinaurics on the south edge of Lake Liurnia

I'm still finding new spells quite disappointing. The crystal barrage/burst spells are complete garbage for the amount of FP they use. I like the super fast pebble as a low FP way of one-shotting grunts and luring enemies towards you. Then the great pebble for bosses. The homing stars is good for bosses that always dodge out of the way out of your spells. That's kind of it out of the ten I have so far, the rest are mediocre. Not yet come across any gravity spells though, they sound potentially awesome?

Story wise you’re meant to go north into the lakes next - it’s where you pop out after beating Godrick in Stormveil. Have you done everything in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula, though?

Also - anyone explored the area after the stone key statue in the starting area yet?

Spoiler

I got past the big rolling things after a few tries, then found a huge fire breathing dragon/centipede thing boss. Noped him after a couple of tries,as I guess I'm very under levelled for him. Anyone know what's down here and is it worth beating the boss yet?

I've only done one legacy dungeon (or whatever they're called) so far but I'd argue that

Spoiler

Stormveil

is up there with From's best designed levels. The amount of secrets, routes, enemies, items etc. crammed into one level is amazing. BotW got some deserved flak for not having real dungeons, but this is something else. I love how much verticality there is in there as well. From has played with this before (Cathedral of the Deep in DS3 for example) but it wasn't until Sekiro that the mechanics really supported it. The dedicated jump button adds a lot.

I think I've gone a very different route to most folk. Haven't been in the castle, went around it and North West, also North East. I haven't found this Weeping Peninsula yet!

I've explored most of Weeping Peninsula apart from the eastern portion - past the erd tree. Anything there I should be prioritising?

Limgrave is massive and although I've done a lot there , I'm sure there's more for me to find!

Likewise with the lakes ... I figured that's where I'm supposed to be heading next, and from the in-game hints I'm guessing that the Academy is the next "main quest" dungeon (if there is such a thing). Still not sure about the tower I'm supposed to be finding behind the castle, though ... I don't think it's the Cerulean Study Hall (that seems to be something different).

I noped out of there.

Spoiler

I thought the only other thing to be found was the ghost dude you can fight (which is what I was telling @Alan Stock to look out for). I didn't know about the entire other area he found though!

That would take you into the lakes , I think.

That’s correct: the academy is the next place to go if you’re following the main story, but there is looooooads in that area to keep you busy before you go anywhere near it. Besides, you have to find the key to get in, first, anyway ;)

Weeping Peninsula is in the south of Limgrave - it’s basically the bottom of the map.

I guess I must have missed a whole load of Stormveil as while I thought it was a nice area I don't quite get all the praise it is getting for being an amazing dungeon, seemed like a relatively short and linear Souls area to me ! Did I just get lucky and pick all the right routes to take me straight to the end, without exploring everywhere?

Spoiler

Went from side entrance, to cliffside, to battlements with some knife-foot birds, to an indoors area that was basically a bunch of rooms centering on one larger room with a shambling abomination prowling around. Lift shortcut back to the room before the battlements.. then the courtyard arena , and then the boss fight with Godrick. Is there much more I missed? Don't even remember seeing any passages I didn't get round to exploring.

Short answer yes, you missed loads.
