Couldn't beat Margit so decided to go and grind some XP.

Now at level 35 I think, but still using my starting sword. Don't feel like I am that well powered. For all this talk of interesting things around every corner, I'm struggling to see that and the lack of loot is a bit annoying. No doubt I'm doing something wrong.

You have been smithing your weapon, right?  I'm not sure why you're not powerful, or what exactly you mean by 'powerful'?

Have you found any good incantations? I'm playing a confessor too, and this is the first time I've tried to incorporate magic into my playstyle in a souls game, but I haven't found anything I like more than just swinging my morningstar around so far. I have one that's like the starting pyromancy spell from DS1, which feels a bit crap, and nothing more effective for offence. (The heals are good, though!)

Don't overlook the flame burst fingertips spell, its good against bosses and larger enemies if you can stand right next to them and you can chain it multiple times by hammering the attack button, it does decent damage. I used it to beat Margit because I was too low level to do decent damage with my sword. Aside from that I bought the better healing spell which is great for saving flasks and also tops up nearby summons health. I've just bought the fire resist spell for a boss I'm facing, and I found a poison weapon spell I think in the trapped chest area (if you have been there you know what I mean!), which seems to do better damage even before causing poison eventually. Next I'll buy the fireball spell to have some ranged options without wasting arrows, and there's sure to be more to find later.

Just dropped 36K Runes in a level (too big to be called a dungeon) thats so convoluted i have no idea if i can re-trace my steps.

Scared to death. Shields up. Peeking around every corner. Proper Souls.

I lost 85k earlier by dying to a fucked up enemy, and getting greedy on the way back and dying to the same sodding thing. Nearly launched the controller onto the bed.

Love this game!

My fashion garments (not even armour) need to go out the window. My Sword Dance no longer breaks through the attacks of the beefy armoured foes because their poise is clearly greater than mine.

It wasn't a problem early game but these fuckers hit hard.

Didn’t make much progress this evening, although found a bunch of smithing stones so my greatsword is +5 now and I found a new ash thing that upgraded strength scaling to B so hoping I can use it to kick Godricks arse

Out tomorrow so will have to resume practicing that fight on Weds.

Was going to post a big moan about the huge run back to Godrick from the site of grace, all the way through the absurd gauntlet of enemies and flamethrowers and a beast man and a giant.

Spoiler

But then I discovered the site of grace right next to the fog wall

Just arrived at a giant lake. Absolutely stunning! The combat is proper mint! Now getting into some decent battles. Been using cover to stop enemy projectiles like I’m playing Halo or Uncharted!

Regaining health flasks when beating a group of enemies is a stroke of genius and fantastic design. Brilliant risk/reward mechanic.

Cannot get over how much better this is than where I went at the start. It’s like I’m now playing a next next gen game in comparison, right across the board. 32hrs played and it feels like the game is only just truly beginning! Crackers!

You should never carry that much around.

Godrick down. The way I ended up doing it was focusing on doing the first stage of the fight with just my sword and the NPC summon so as to preserve my magic. Then in the second phase I unleashed my +5 jellyfish to tank him while I kept at a distance and unloaded every bit of magic I had in him. The jellyfish stayed alive so long Godrick actually got poisoned which had a negligible effect on his health bar but which I found amusing.

Not sure where to focus now. The South is mostly done apart from a few minibosses/caves. I've poked around the East but I feel like it's clearly still too high level for me. Feel like I'm being pushed to the north/north-west now.

Especially in this game I hardly ever have many runes on me as there are quite a few merchants to spend it at if you don't have enough to level up.

There's something about how it seamlessly flows from the open world gameplay into the more linear classic dark souls style stuff which is really satisfying.

The variety of situations and environments in this game is crazy

See, this is why I love this game. I think I might be ahead of you level and “progress” wise, but I have no idea where you’re talking about. Time to explore! :D

Stormveil castle can get to fuck. This game is like 10% elation and 90% frustration for me. I know when I hit the 10 hour mark in Bloodborne I was loving that shit, whereas here I just wanna frisbee the fucking disc up the yard. Not for me this one

Leave the castle.

Im well over twenty hours in and haven’t been there yet but have found endless things to see and do.

God damn I love this game

Spoiler

Godrick the grafted down on the 3rd attempt with just me the NPC summons and my jellyfish buddy. Was down to the last sliver of health at the end when he grabbed me - I honestly thought I was done for but had just enough for one last hit.
