If you travel to the church and have a good ranged attack you can usually get several hits in as he is initially moving away from you.  Obviously this doesn't last too long but it's a good start.

I tried this and he smashed the wall down and kill me thru whatever was left of the church. Got him in the end tho, he's a right pain.

I think might be able to top this…

After a tense battle I was pretty much this, I had nothing left, it was 1 hit - me or him. In typical Dark Souls fashion it’s was him. However the boss was poisoned and while I was in my death animation the boss succumbed to the poison and died!

In literally 1 second I went from ‘you f****** c***!’ to ‘that’s a daaaamn shame!’

God bless the slow death animation!

Haha.

Yep, I think that scrapes the win as the rollercoaster of thinking it all lost despite being so close only to then nab the victory is hard to beat.

About 25 hours in and absolutely loving this, only done 2 main quest bosses as well.  I just love exploring and doing coop/helping people.

Quick question

  Reveal hidden contents

I've been around a lot of areas on the map and have only found a few map fragments in the open world so a lot of the map is covered but has some light of graces unlocked.  Do all areas have maps in the open world or are some hidden inside areas etc ?  Probably just not looking hard enough and the game is so full of stuff probably just missing them

A while back I remember reading that there's some simple way of identifying where all the map fragments are, but I can't remember what it was - I've travelled huge amounts of the map now but still only got the starting fragment so my map looks pretty empty! Anyone know the way to find them? I think you can use the empty map to do it, or something ...

Just look carefully at the empty maps, you can't miss it!!

Put 7 hours in this and I am really enjoying just exploring.

I have defeated one mini boss, but met a few massive bosses and died in 1 hit. How do I upgrade myself? I've bought an improved shield and found a better sword.

Any tips as I may be hitting a wall already.

Aside from Margaret who's a massive spike, just about any class can use the wolf/jellyfish summons you get early on so use this as distractions/aggro pullers on the minor bosses. Level your weapon and learn the fights, the mini bosses go down relatively easy once you find their rhythm. Also don't be afraid to summon help if you can.

Wander and explore, and rest up at as many Sites of Grace as you can, it will all become clear.

Also, I've found a strange mask that just says "Hello" in a weird voice. What is the point of it?

It's a wee co-op toy. You can say "Hello" to co-op buddies.

IMO, savour this early game period, where you have no idea what you're doing. Discovery is half the fun.

Explore elsewhere. I’m still running into badasses who destroy me, but there are plenty of places I haven’t been. Also, use the map’s markers for areas you want to check out (in case you got unlucky on the way there) or areas you want to avoid. 💀

I resent that I have to do anything else this week other than play Elden Ring.

No shit. My friend has thrown a sicky, I'd be tempted to do the same if I wasn't so busy and responsible for the delivery of a project. God damn normal life!

Oh my god - are you tell me that after hours of exploration in Castle Stormveil…

  Reveal hidden contents

Until I find a key protected by a black knight, I haven’t even entered the castle proper yet?!

Brackets - the real Elden Ring has not yet started?!

Haha, I'm sorry you spoiled yourself but on the other hand you'd be missing out on a lot! If its any help I used the straight sword charge attack to do good damage to him, and if you find sleep arrows don't waste them on him, he's immune (as I found to fatal consequences). Enjoy the next 5 hours in the castle!

Can you elaborate further on this (without spoilers if poss) as I’m a bit torn about starting ER without having played their prev games (after having loved DaS recently). I don’t want ER to kinda sour those games if/when I play them.

I'd say that playing this before the other games might actually be a really decent way for newcomers to get into them rather than ruining them.

Elden Ring allows you to get a proper feel for FROM's systems, how they build worlds, how they treat the player, how combat works, etc, etc but always with a get out cause when things start to get hard. There are so many options here and it is so easy to just walk away from a boss fight and go and explore somewhere else whilst you develop your character, level up gear, and become more adept.

The previous games have considerably less freedom which means many hit a roadblock that frustrates (although FROM always offer help which can make the harder parts plenty manageable) and, without that freedom to just run or ride off, it can be a challenge. This does create to a constant tension when exploring as the risk v reward is very high but that has always been my favourite aspect of them and that is. so far at least, not quite as prevalent in this. ER allows the player escape danger pretty easily but there have already been places where I've been a bit worried about losing my loot and not getting back to it safely (and I've not even been into one of the 'legacy' dungeons yet) so it does have the grim fear of previous work, just not quite as constant or overbearing.

TLDR: play this, then play Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro before going back to DaS 2 and Das 3. That should keep you busy until the next FROM game.

I think I've set the bar for myself too high now.  I got to the roundtable place and suddenly panicked - too many NPCs I have to draw!

Amazing. But also, the old crone statue didn't light up for me. I wonder if it's because I did Stormfoot before I found her? So do all those statues point to catacombs? I was wondering...

Also, people telling me to use the dismount button, I didn't know there was one! I was using the Torrent whistle to dismount. Oops.

They light up when you interact with them and a faint blue light points towards a nearby catacomb or mini dungeon. If you’ve already done said sundown, it won’t light up.

Margit down!

Spoiler

That took me a surprising number of goes for a first proper boss. I didn't use summons or spirits, but still, he was markedly tougher than anything I've encountered so far and I've been playing for 15 hours. Those quick draw dagger attacks when you think he's at the end of a combo were a bugger. I can't remember a tougher first cutscene-introduced boss in a From game. Even Gascoigne was easier.
