 - I was cursing this very mechanic just yesterday fighting a golem. Diabolical yes, genius....

One UI thing that's been pissing me off lately is that for some reason when equipping Ashes of War, you can't view the descriptions of them. Why? I have so many now I have no idea what half of them do, and its annoying to have to exit the grace point just to go into your inventory and look.

You can!! Click right stick, then press square :)

You're welcome

So bear with me here, but I'm going to make a compelling argument for why some of Elden Ring's odd or sometimes actively hostile user interface design is good, actually.

I was thinking about this in terms of how the new mounted mechanic sits within the way the game uses the traditional Dark Souls interface structure and the way it's activated on the left menu like other items: activate the mount by tapping the assigned item button when the "horse activation" item is selected is unremarkable in itself, though somewhat granular. However, where it gets weird is when you are shoved off your horse by it being "killed" and then have to pay the "penalty" of using one of your health flasks to mount up again.

Now, in any normal, logical UX design, the game would just make the assumption that the player already knows the penalty they will be paying when they try to mount up again, as you will simply change the icon to show, for example, that this will incur a cost, so the player is both informed of the restriction and the penalty with the same stroke, and are already making an informed decision when they try to use the item. There is no need for an extra step, as the player already knows what they need. The steps to get back on the horse remain the same, just the interface visuals will have been updated to reflect the change in context.

Elden Ring already updates the item graphic to give this context. HOWEVER, it also brings up an ARE YOU SURE, YES/NO? question about whether you want to use a flask - which given you already know it will cost one, and are activating the item with that full knowledge, is both maddening and infuriating that you have to answer the question every time you just want to get back on your steed in a panic while staring down the maw of a dragon.

But the designers, I'm sure, absolutely know this. They actually had to code in and present this extra step, when it would have been easier to just keep the item action the same and consume the flask without the confirmation menu. They already KNOW that you can assume the player wants to use a flask every time they try to use the item in this context, so the extra menu barrier to using it easily is specifically there to get in the way.

They even make the "No" option of using a flask the default one selected when asking "ARE YOU SURE?! I'M NOT SURE YOU'RE SURE? TROLOLOL", so as you frantically dodge roll out of danger you then have to move, at least, your movement thumb or dodge button thumb over to the digital direction select to specifically select "yes", before confirming, with the confirm button which is of course not the item button.

And then more often than not die in the panic when fractions of a second of delay in actions can mean death. And just instantly getting back on the horse with the button press and the implied and already known penalty would have saved you.

It's fucking diabolical, and I think it's genius.

Naaaah, the question response should default to yes.  It's not genius, it's unnecessarily annoying.  The potential cost of accidentally using a flask? Minimal.  The potential cost of not mounting up? Way more.

OMG the Ash of War - Flame of the Redmanes is insanely good at staggering things, even bosses! I was just fighting this huge gargoyle and 3 or 4 hits of that was even staggering this colossal enemy! Check your inventory and give it a go, it takes a second to activate but boy is it powerful.

In other news I don't like this rememberance duping, there's only 7 mausoleums and 15 remberances? God damn you Miyazaki! Having to plan and decide what to get this go around :(

just the last boss left to do for me now, probably a few other things I've missed too. In fact I know I haven't done that Azuras grave dungeon yet as I noped out of there ages ago.

If anyone wants help with any bosses I am available, let me know!

That's exactly the point I'm making: they already know the above is the case and that not mounting up is dangerous. It's been designed that way specifically to induce panic.

It might be a "nicer" or more clean experience to not have that extra fiddly bit, but it would not be Elden Ring.

Level 167, max Rivers of Blood, plus Mimic and Malenia is still driving me up the wall. This is hopeless.

Have you tried bloodhound step to enable you to get out of the way of her death attacks? That was the clincher for me

I don't think you can swap River of Blood's L2, so I'd have to use something else, and then I'd have no bleed which I thought was important? My build is a mess, but respeccing feels like a potential headache of unforeseen consequences what with trying to take everything in account. I suppose I could always back up my save...hmmm.

What build are you trying to achieve?

I respecced from one build entirely to another new game and its fairly risk free, particularly near end game where you have access to infinite resources to plus 9 everything

You could use the rivers of blood on your left hand and another katana on the right with bloodhound step, you'd still proc blood but you wouldn't be using teh ROB weapon art. Or if you fancy quick swapping when the danger comes put it on another weapon and quickswap when she does her death from above or waterfowl but this is a bit trickier. Also use the mimic.

Are you dual wielding Katanas? I found her fairly easy with Rivers and the Mimic, it stun locked her quite a bit, still had at least 10 goes tho. I was way lower level than you and don't think Rivers was maxed yet. What part of the fight gives you the most problems?

I'm using a fingerprint shield +25 which just about lets me survive her waterfowl bullshit because there's no chance of me learning to roll through it. I'm basically dealing with a strength/faith build when ideally I should have dex if I'm using a katana, and possibly more arc for the bleeding? But then I'll probably have to switch back for the end boss from what I've read...

Swarm of Flies decimates her if you have the arcane stats to use it and a decent seal

Prior to the nerf, Radahn was much more difficult. The summons basically did nothing but distract him and die in two or three hits, his arrows at the start were extremely difficult to dodge on torrent, he hit ridiculously hard and his attacks had mad reach.

Not sure how they nerfed him, exactly, but by all accounts he’s now far easier.

I did it :D

Spent the whole fight on horseback flinging the odd spell in, but mostly relied on summons so I basically just ran around the arena summoning.

They all die very quickly so it's a slow method, but after a few attempts of being flattened I decided to cheese it.

I tried to do a 100% summon fight, not attacking once, which nearly worked but he wiped the summons out too quickly in phase 2. Such an epic fight, one of the highlights of the Souls series for me.

No idea what to do now, so many options!

When it comes to Ashes, as an Astrologer I relied on Mimic+10 on my first run and Tiche+10 on my NG. Especially in the later parts of NG, the Mimic seems squishy. Tiche is so nimble and happily dodges attacks where my Mimic collects attacks with her face while being knocked down all the time. That said, maybe Mimic works perfect for melee builds with a little bit of Def and Poise.

So, my recommendation for an Astrologer: Tiche. Getting her is a complete bastard though, her gaol is by far the hardest I encountered.

Just started NG+ and my new goal is to see how many bosses Tiche can solo. So far she's taken down Tree Sentinel, Margit and Godrick pretty handily while I stand back in Black Knife cosplay and watch the carnage.

Wish her weapon gave you attacks like that! It's special is pretty sweet but I want the rest of her moveset.

Do you have the aggro talisman?

Tip: equip it - summon Mimic - unequip it. You Mimic is now your tank so you can attack without worrying about Malenia turning on you.

I’d be a little bit wary as I could gain aggro by attacking a lot. Also, this worked for me as a mage. Also, I stacked all sorts of Def and HP talisman.

Needs to be done again at phase 2 so be prepared for that. If you time it right you can re-equip the aggro talisman right before phase 2 starts. Don’t forget to unequip.

Right then. Ten hours in, which is about five hours further than I got with BB and about nine and a half hours further than DS3. Still haven't tackled any "proper" bosses but barring Caelid (which I might leave for a bit) I only have Castle Morne left to do south of Stormveil, which I'm attempting to put off because I'm a coward.

Of the minibosses, the tactics are starting to drop into place a little bit - I had about five cracks at the Erdtree Avatar, and I forgot the immense satisfaction you get from thinking "I know how to avoid this", rolling through an attack at the last minute, and eventually whittling the boss down.

That being said, I haven't settled on a build yet - I've got the Twinblade, but I'm using it with a shield unless I'm at a boss because I'm getting some joy parrying. I did pick up the Zweihander which I've got to +3; can't use it yet though as it makes me fat roll and I love my mobility. I really wish the Roundtable Hold event had kicked off so I could upgrade stuff further but I think I'm resigned to waiting to beat Margit before it happens.

Do feel like I'm cheesing the bosses slightly - just using Lone Wolf Ashes to draw aggro and land some heavy attacks, normally by the time they die the boss is down at about a quarter health for me to bumble my way through.

Still no spells. Do warrior-types use them at all or is that top arrow destined to be forever empty?

Jesus fucking aoe attacks can fuck right off. I've had the final boss down to 25% but getting back there consistently is such a ballache, Radogan has some proper bullshit moves that he can just spam at will and they're barely even avoidable, and that's what I don't like about the fight, you don't feel like it's a fight half the time you're just trying to avoid environmental bullshit and get the odd hit in. I'm determined to do it with my dex build, when I had EB down to 25% I got caught by a grab, in true From fashion it decimated my massive health bar. It's basically luck if the boss doesn't start spamming unavoidable aoe attacks that cover basically the whole arena, which is fucking bullshit frankly.
