Sat in bed last night and watched ‘Thirteen Lives’ on the Bigscreen app. I always forget what a great experience it is. Basically just sat there in your own private cinema  watching whatever you fancy. So good.

People always talk about how streaming services are killing cinema, but VR has the legs to put it to bed completely. It might not be on par with a full fledged cinema experience right now, but a few years down the line I bet it will be almost indiscernible.

Maybe I can hang on for Quest 3 then as I guess Quest 2 might well be superceded this year?

Almost guaranteed for second half of the year sometime but nothing official yet, just leaks and so on.

Even if the Q3 had the same specs as the Pro, for £400, I think I'd still find it underwhelming. Which, presumably, it won't.

Eye tracking and the better controllers would be nice to have, admittedly. Reading about the inventive stuff they're doing with eye tracking on PSVR2, it could be significant for gameplay as well as graphics quality:

Quote

After passing through a door labeled “Don’t blink,” bloodied mannequins await him, huddled on the floor.

When Spencer finally can’t take it anymore and has to blink, the mannequins change their positions. When he closes his eyes again, one of the mannequins even comes to life. Gradually he adjusts to the mechanics, closing the lids only tactically after reloading the guns.

The Quest native version of GRID Legends is due to release today.  Nothing about it anywhere yet,  not even any preview plays.  Just one video:

Im really interested in getting this, but the lack of any hype/previous/reviews is very concerning.  Will it be a jankfest?  What will the controls be like?

I've yet to try a Meta refund but I might use it if I jump in and preorder this and it turns out to be shite - is it an easy/reliable process I should trust in?

I've submitted 3 or 4 successful refunds in the last 12 months since getting mine, not had one rejected yet, as long as you play it for less than I think 2 hours and claim within 14 days you should be fine.  Easy to do through the App as well, from the Meta site:

Open the Meta Quest mobile app on your phone.
Tap Store, then select Quest, Rift or Go on the top left.
Tap Menu at the bottom, then tap Settings.
Tap Purchase History, then tap the app you want to request a refund for.
Tap Request Refund.
Follow the on-screen instructions to request your refund.

see this  is the reason i havent pulled the trigger on it either - there has been no hype or previews - it kinda just got annouced last week with no real fan fare with just the trailer - which with it being a AAA game them you would have expected previews etc.... but not even any "praise" bought youtube previews declaring it the next big VR things.   Even though there is £2 off if your pre-order i think ill hold off to later and see what reviews say (also have  one of those 30% codes from oculus so if i wait and decide to go fo it will only be about £15)

right lets get the elephant in the room out of the way - Yes Grid legends looks like a ps1 era game - i mean graphically its on the lower scale of vr games.  BUT if you can get past the graphics there appears to be a decent racer underneath.  controls are standard game pad controls using the touch controllers (so no you cant controll the cars by touch contrilling the steering wheel or manually grabbing the gears.)

Havent had a chance to play online yet but this is where it will make or break this game as IF peeps give it a chance and put aside the fugly graphics then this could turn out to be good online racer (racers being what we have missed on the quest)   below is a quick vid i took (vid is still uploading so resolution will be better shortly)

hmmm not overly happy with continued desupporting of quest 1 (4 years old I think). Got an email from them (well from Meta who I was only recently forced to sign up with to even use my headset by 31st December) only to now be told :-

•You will still be able to use your Quest 1 headset and available apps. (woo!)

•We won't be delivering new features to Quest 1.

•We plan to continue maintaining the system software with critical bug fixes and security patches until 2024.

•Quest 1 users will no longer be able to create or join a party.

•Quest 1 users who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home social features will lose access to these features on 5 March 2023. You won't be able to invite others to your Home or visit someone else's Home.

SO they will let me carry on playing the games I paid for which is nice of them I suppose(!). But the removal of certain multiplayer stuff is a bit mean. Doesn't bode well for the future.

It is a shame as it is a really capable headset and has some of the best VR experiences like BEat Sabre, Pistol Whip, Superhot etc. I prefer the image quality to PSVR... So I guess I have to make a decision now - upgrade to QUest 2 with inferior strap (£400?) and likely an upgrade soon? And the issue there is that I don't see many VR experiences that are better than the best ones I have on Quest 1. Other than that Just over a grand to switch over to PSVR2 space (as I don't have a PS5) - that gives best quality headset but I cant play my old psvr titles...

hmmm

As an Oculus account holder that never transitioned over to a Meta equivalent I'm not at all surprised. I've decided to sell my Quest 1 and my DAS. Already factory reset everything and deleted my Oculus account. Between this and the lack of backwards compatibility on PSVR2 I've decided that I'm done with VR until a low cost, high performance PC solution comes along without creepy strings attached. It's a shame that Oculus didn't stay on that path.

I might have bought GRID if I wasn't going to have Gran Turismo 7 available on PSVR2 next month! Seems kinda pointless because of that, though, so unless everyone says it's amazing, I'll steer clear. No pun intended.

Wow, that is quite the graphical downgrade to squeeze it on the Quest 2 😳

It was surely going to have to be. A PC version would have been the better option. Not like Codies haven't done it before ..

I’ve went and refunded grid legends - taking the graphics out of the argument for the minute there are couple of other things that just after playing made me to go nah.  First of no spacial sound (even though there is an option that does nothing in the menu) which wouldn’t be to bad if the next biggest issue wasn’t there which is no mirrors on the car!! So no way to see who and where other drivers are behind you etc..

it’s a pitty cause the racing itself is good  but we now know why no early previews were given and why but was just dumped out there .  They should have held back worked on it and made it a lunch game for quest 3

£1,300 is still rather a lot.

For me, most of the things they're doing to push towards AR/mixed reality aren't really of much interest right now. If I end up with a Quest 3 and it shares some of this it might be a nice extra to explore.

Quest 2 is an interesting case study. I got mine on launch day for £280. Brand-new tech.

In subsidising it, Meta have put VR into more hands than ever before, but they've also set an expectation on what these experiences should cost. Which gets us into a cycle of compromising the tech to fit a price, and people deciding it's not enough of a leap to bother.

I wouldn't mind the new controllers, they're the best bit of the Quest Pro for me, but I can live without them.

Apparently the Meta Quest Pro is getting a $400 price drop.

I still don't think it's enough really, even though i do like the features it offers.

With the definitely-much-more-powerful Quest 3 supposedly out at the end of the year for more like the Quest 2 price point, there is zero reason to buy the Quest Pro.

I doubt the quest 3 will have eye/face tracking though, thats the only thing i would miss from a new headset. Waiting for Quest 3 would be beneficial to most people though for sure.

How expensive would it be to include? It's certainly an easy thing to drop, but with PS VR2 having it, I wonder if Meta will consider parity on that score.

I think quest 3 may have eye tracking I'm not sure they would include face tracking though ( believe psvr doesn't either).

The new course on Walkabout Mini Golf is ace, Upside Down Town messes with your perception of gravity and you end up playing shots on the walls and the ceiling from your standard position so you end up flailing the club around your head and missing absolute sitters. It looks awesome as well, the whole course going every way with the town wrapped all around you. Well worth the 3 quid.
