Finished Maskmaker (£15 on Steam) and I was impressed. The mask mechanics were both satisfyingly tactile, and well implemented for VR. The world and narration reminded me of Shadow Point, but I found them more serene and appealing.

The puzzles are unlikely to drive you mad, but there's something incredibly gratifying about the process, so even if you see the solution a way off, you still enjoy implementing it.

It's arguably not as inventive as their much shorter Fisherman's Tale, but it's more of a game at about 4 and a half hours —and definitely of a quality worth checking out. Not to mention a very entertaining end sequence.

It feels like it's potentially something that could be cut back to run on Quest natively, but I haven't heard anything about that yet, and it's been out the best part of a year.

Well, Maskmaker has finally arrived natively on Quest. It's from the folks behind A Fisherman's Tale, and I'd absolutely recommend it.

Now I just need something new for the Christmas break. Might need to venture back into the PCVR waters.

Ooooh! Fisherman's Tale was such a joy for a couple of nights last Christmas. I still need to finish RE4 and Elden Ring but these guys really get VR... probably coming to PSVR2 next year, isn't it?

I don't know if my cable is usb 3 - but the headset is saying it's 2 and it won't stream the desktop - just getting a black screen when I select 'desktop' from the oculus menu (althouhg the mouse cursor is changing appropriately when I move it over buttons and icons on the desktop) - which I assume means it's not a 3.

If you go into the Oculus PC app, click on Devices and then select your headset (while it's connected but probably not while it's on your head if you're having problems!) you can see what connection it thinks it's got. There's a USB Test if you scroll down a bit. I guess if your headset is saying USB2 then it will as well.

Not to be too dumbed down here but obviously the PC port has to be USB3 as well - often not all of them are.

yeah, I should check the PC but given it’s a brand new Acer Predator - I suspect all the ports are 3.  It’s also got a thunderbolt port which I assume I should use as that’ll be best.

Decided to leave Elden Ring until January and focus on getting on with RE4. Noticed the Rez and Tetris effect demos and spent 45 mins on them and now am having to resist buying them both as I'll probably get rid of the Quest early next year. Tetris Effect is only a tenner, though.

So I picked up an oculus quest 2 the other day (christmas bonus), I very briefly had a PSVR when they first came out and didn't get on with it, I think my first experience with motion sickness completely put me off.

However I thought I would give it another go, knowing that I maybe went in a bit hard with it originally.

So only little step's so far with the demo's and such, have picked up walkabout golf as well and plan just to take small steps for the next couple of weeks.

I have also bought Zenith which is the game I really want to play once I am a bit more comfortable with it but just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of comfortable games to help me get going while I am finding my VR legs as they say? I was thinking of looking at the rec room when I have a moment and see what is in there that might be good to experience?

I just want to say as well, how much better this is than the psvr, the wireless aspect is brilliant in itself but also the controllers are fantastic, having only used the move controllers originally these feel so much better suited. I had a go on the demo yesterday and it was great just having a mess about in the lobby area throwing paper airplanes and the such.

I do love the idea of VR so I am hoping that this time around I am a little more patient and can ease myself into it better as I do think it's brilliant. So yeah going back to it, does anyone have any good games / apps recommendations as I get going with it this time around?

Are you looking to do free movement/walking around, or teleporting? I've had my Quest 2 since launch, and still always opt for teleport if it's available.

The only game to adequately do really dynamic free movement and not mess me up was Iron Man, due to the ingenious HUD work. Anything with a fixed cockpit should help too, as that static consistency seems to make the brain/stomach pipeline much happier.

Beat sabre, not only is it a great game but its very easy to put decent amount of time into it without motion sickness and helped me to get ‘used’ to VR. I found that as soon as I felt a bit off in VR its too late in the early days - made similar mistakes as you on PSVR back in the day but became more sensible and built up decent VR legs.

Had a Quest 2 for a while, and despite getting a WiFi 6 router a while back I could never get Airlink set up very well.  It always seemed shaky, blurry and low resolution.

Not sure sure if things have come on a bit in a year, but I've just been playing around with Lone Echo (the only PC VR game i have installed aside from sim racers which I use my Reverb G2 for) and it looks stunning.  Got Half Life Alex downloading now so I can give that a proper go tomorrow.

For anyone new to VR this Christmas, a couple of VR games I keep going back to are Pistol Whip and Superhot VR.

Pistol Whip is a rhythm game and a good workout for your legs, as you’re constantly ducking out of the way of incoming bullets. The music is great too. Think of it as Beat Saber with guns.

Superhot VR is the perfect Matrix / John Wick tribute, the added immersion over the original Superhot really takes it to the next level. It’s probably my favourite VR experience outside of sim racing.

There’s also Audica by Harmonix, another “Beat Saber with guns” rhythm game. Worth picking up on sale, but definitely get Pistol Whip first!

I know it's just come out for about £15 on Quest, but Maskmaker on Steam is currently about £3 in the sale! Ludicrous bargain.

Similarly, Wanderer, one of the best PCVR puzzlers, is down to £15 in the sale. Both are excellent games for this time of year.

Now I just need a new puzzler for myself. Tempted by The Last Clockwinder.

Probably been mentioned here a few times in the past but I'm looking to get some prescription vr lenses for my Quest 2.  Anyone have any recommendation of companies they've used?  Doing a quick google search a lot are US based I'd rather a UK or Europe based firm for quick and low cost delivery

Started playing the Walking Dead series in VR.  Started with The walking dead onslaught but it very much reminds me of a game in the early days of VR so decided to drop it and start the walking dead: saints and sinners which is much more polished, however the PC VR version doesn’t work nicely with the quest controls and I had to select a custom controller scheme from the community to get it to work.

Supported Controllers - Touch controllers

hm. I played with a driving game or two on Quest controllers, arcadey stuff was fine but anything approaching sim felt too disconnected. I wonder where this will lie.

Just found out you can cast to a Firestick using an app called Airscreen, my son and his buddy have been laughing their heads off playing What The Bat, being able to see what they are doing is ace. It makes the whole thing a lot more inclusive.

After about a year, I've got past the first villager encounter in RE4 and it really shines when you get used to the positions of your gear on your body. I can't believe how well it stands up and actually works in VR. About three quarters down now and it's making me very excited for Village but I hope Capcom have had a good look at this, given how the controllers are now on par for interactions. If you've got a Quest 2 and haven't tried this, get on it.

hmmm not overly happy with continued desupporting of quest 1 (4 years old I think). Got an email from them (well from Meta who I was only recently forced to sign up with to even use my headset by 31st December) only to now be told :-

•You will still be able to use your Quest 1 headset and available apps. (woo!)

•We won't be delivering new features to Quest 1.

•We plan to continue maintaining the system software with critical bug fixes and security patches until 2024.

•Quest 1 users will no longer be able to create or join a party.

•Quest 1 users who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home social features will lose access to these features on 5 March 2023. You won't be able to invite others to your Home or visit someone else's Home.

SO they will let me carry on playing the games I paid for which is nice of them I suppose(!). But the removal of certain multiplayer stuff is a bit mean. Doesn't bode well for the future.

It is a shame as it is a really capable headset and has some of the best VR experiences like BEat Sabre, Pistol Whip, Superhot etc. I prefer the image quality to PSVR... So I guess I have to make a decision now - upgrade to QUest 2 with inferior strap (£400?) and likely an upgrade soon? And the issue there is that I don't see many VR experiences that are better than the best ones I have on Quest 1. Other than that Just over a grand to switch over to PSVR2 space (as I don't have a PS5) - that gives best quality headset but I cant play my old psvr titles...

hmmm

The worry for me is what they mean by the party stuff. Hope it doesn’t mean you can’t play multiplayer in Walkabout Mini Golf, because that will be fucking crap.

I wouldn’t mind so much if there was a date for Quest 3 as I’m not going to pick up a 2 now.

I almost guarantee you'll be fine. Walkabout runs its own thing that seems agnostic to Meta's bullshit.

Seems like it'll just be the party calls that run at OS level alongside games, but Walkabout has built-in chat anyway.

Edit: Beaten to the buzzer
