That the announcement trailer looked like this, and the reality was a muddy 2"x1" rectangle in the middle of the visor. More akin to the Tiger R-Zone than what the Quest Pro can seemingly do:

I’m sure that’s what they were aiming for, but it never became a commercial product anyway, did it?

I was more questioning why you called it a dramatic failure. To me it was just another one of those endless products that never go anywhere, like Kinect, Google Glass, etc.

But the Quest Pro is predominantly aimed at the work space isn’t it? I can’t imagine they would have a price tag like that on a mainstream gaming device.

It lasts 1-2 hours on battery, which basically kills it for any workplace that pays attention. I just don't get how this device can possibly succeed in the marketplace at that price. But maybe it's not meant to, and it's just a stepping R&D stone to get some of the good features into Quest 3 and then 4 for an affordable price. My problem with Meta's strategy is that I don't quite see how they can keep the shareholders on side for long enough to realise the benefits of a cheap, mass market headset with momentum behind it.

At this point, PSVR2 seems like a much better bet for gamers, and will have a good few months to build up a head of steam before the Quest 3 appears. And given the price rise for Quest 2 and the RRP of Quest Pro, it's hard to envision a Quest 3 coming out for less than too much. And, of course, games will look nowhere near as good as the ones on PSVR2. So at that point the market is almost sure to be more difficult to pivot back towards Meta.

Quest 3 should be the product being released this year, at a price point similar to what the Quest 2 is now. Meta's falling behind with development here - its main headset is getting old, and when PSVR comes out, it's only the wireless aspect that will keep it from feeling antique.

I really like my Quest 2, but Meta's strategy is increasingly baffling to me and I'm starting to think the overall project is doomed, which I certainly wasn't thinking a couple of years ago.

Yeah i think £1500 is far too much for this device. However, i understand it is more aimed at corperate but with the metaverse somewhat failing already i just don't have a good feeling about this.

The tech in theory is good - pancake lenses, higher resolution, face/eye tracking - but i was expecting this at half the price. Competitors already have some of this stuff for far less than the 1500 Meta want.

The quest 2 should have been phased out instead of the price drop and a quest 3 should have come out this year for what they are charging now. Perhaps without the pancake lenses but it should also have offered eye/facetracking if they wanted to release a quest 3 pro for say, £700.

It did become a commercial product, but not a consumer one. Apparently they've applied the tech to some enormous US military contracts, so it's certainly not a commercial failure, assuming that gets delivered.

But in terms of not delivering even 10% of the launch video's promise for that model, and killing that form of consumer mixed reality a decade, it's hard to call it much else. It didn't explode and kill people, but it also didn't do what it set out to. At least the second Kinect and Google Glass worked. Though Glass was indeed a bit shit.

The consensus seems to be that Quest 3 will be announced before too long. They're just going to keep that consumer-focused line separate from the Pro line. For now.

The thing that struck me about this ‘event’ was the sheer lack of compelling software. Their biggest game announcement was a port of a two year old PSVR game. Their big headline software feature was putting feet on sub-Xbox 360 style avatars in their shitty Second Life thingy that nobody cares about. How little do people care? A leaked internal memo showed they’re having to try and force their own employees to use the thing even Meta staff with access to free hardware are that indifferent to it. I’d hoped Resident Evil 4 might be a precursor for loads of quality projects in the same vein instead it’s tumbleweeds.

Sounds like Quest 3 will be released around this time in 2023 from what I've heard.

This too. I haven't really played my Quest since RE4. What has happened to GTA San Andreas VR? Its gone very quiet.

Stuff like splinter cell vr has been cancelled too.

If you're short of games, get yourself in this thread.

Sideload the VR PsP emulator, set it to proper stereoscopic 3D, upscale the graphics to 4x and play Ridge Racers 2.  It's probably the best game on Quest and what they have done with the emulator, (simply playing the original game code) is astonishing. It was made for a handheld yet plays great in 3D and VR. It's like magic.

Reinstalled Blaston after foreeeever, to start from scratch.

They've totally changed how you unlock weapons , and it takes forever to do it. I feel like I had about six new weapons in the time it takes to unlock one now.

Good job it's a really good game.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just tried out the free I Expect You To Die mixed reality demo.

It's super short - literally about 5 minutes - but quite impressive. I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

I'm in on the alpha for Call of the Sea too, so keen to take a look at that.

We've got our son an Acer Predator Helios 300 as a gaming PC - which will be good enough for connecting the Oculus to the PC for Alyx and Minecraft VR and stuff...

BUT

I've no idea how best to do it.  Any thoughts, recommendations?

Two options really - wireless or cabled.

If your PC is wired to the network via an ethernet cable, AND you have 5G wifi access close to the headset you can go wireless. If not, then any decent USB cable will be fine.

On the quest, fire up Oculus Link, choose airplay or wired, select the PC and connect. You'll get a new menu at the bottom - select 'Desktop' to see the PC screen and use that to fire up your game. Most games will then ask if you want to play in normal or VR mode. If given the choice, choose Oculus VR over Steam VR as it generally performs better.

I'm sure there are other ways for some games, but that's how I do it.

I got to have an hour on Iron Man on the Quest last weekend, and it's the real deal. A PS4 game from a couple of years ago is top tier today.

The substance of a proper game with unlockables, loadouts and replayable challenges. Better still, as someone sentivie to VR motion sickness, I was flying around like a loon without any ill effects.

I know that it sounds ridiculous, but when you're holding one hand behind you to fire a thruster, whilst blasting enemies with the other hand, you really do feel like Iron Man. It's an idealsuperhero implementation. Especially since I suspect it's the suit's HUD that mitigates nausea.

I think it's about £30, but I'm tempted. And I can't wait to see what the next iteration of this is.

ive enjoyed Iron Man vr from what ive played with it - kinda got side tracked this week as Dr Beef released the next beta for Jedi Knight for quest that allows you play the full game instead of just the demo level.  he has also included a cheat menu that allows you to have force powers and sabre right from the start so been jedi'ing my way through the game  grinning like a loon as i go :)

Among us VR is out today and only £7.99 so will be giving that a go tonight (if my son allows me as he is dying to play it as well)

The Jedi knight outcast

mod is coming along brilliantly - the latest early access version  via patron (which is well worth signing up even for a month to show dr beef his work is appreciated) now has force push / pull using gesture  movements - so you make “come here” gesture with you left hand to pull and then well you push out to force push - seriously it’s this close to letting you be a Jedi in real life -  I’ve been running around with a huge grin on my face obliterating imperial scum 🙂

edit quick vid I made to show the new force powers actions
