Have any PC-only users taken the plunge of stripping out the Facebook requirements using Oculess https://github.com/basti564/Oculess ?

I guess Oculus Virtual Desktop won't work, is https://alvr-org.github.io/ a decent replacement? I dunno why I'm bothering looking at all this, my room isn't getting any bigger.

This works great - but you have to pay.

How do I link to my PC. I really want to try Half-Life Alyx. Also does anyone recommend buying a long power cable so you can play without fear of the batteries running out?

You can either link it by a USB cable (Occulus sell a ridiculously expensive link cable but I wouldn't bother) or try out Airlink where your Quest can connect to your PC over wifi, but results can sometimes be spotty.

I find long sessions on VR a bit uncomfortable so default battery life is okay for me, but if you were planning to stay under so long it's not enough on a regular basis I'd buy the elite strap with the extended battery attachment personally.

Will this one work?

Also, if you don't want to spend on the Elite strap, I just have my phone charging battery pack in my back pocket if I'm low on juice. Though that will obviously occupy the USB port you'd be using to cable in to your PC here.

I'd be interested to see if you could sideload a legit Virtual Desktop apk you'd bought for wireless with Oculess.

Cannot wait! - is it PCVR?

Oculus Quest 2 unfortunately. It's bloody great though.

In other news my £18 link cable turned up today so I'm going to see how Star Wars Squadrons is and wait for Half-Life Alyx to appear in a sale :)

I can't reccomend Wander highly enough. It's just google street in VR but an amazing thing to jump around the world.

This is my favourite app on the quest. Great if your planning to go one holiday and want to have a look around the area first.

Download and run Steam VR then it'll show up in the Oculus App.

I've managed to get that running. I can't get Star Wars Squadrons to work though. Moose Life boots up fine but Star Wars just has an image/advert in quest, while the game is up and running on the PC. Typical that Minter's stuff works fine :P

Right I've reset everything and it now works. I was a bit disappointed with Squadrons and it looks really bitty and fuzzy, but I'm guessing that's because of the resolution of the Quest headset?

Oh well, back to Resi 4 :P

I think it looks absolutely brilliant. The amount of people fucking whinging in the YouTube comments though, fuck sake.

I totally agree. I’ve been in that world for 2 years now and I’ve had enough and coming back here.

Can’t wait for RE:4 later today. I’m also enjoying Song in The Smoke on my Quest 2.

Do we know what time RE4 will be released later today?

I'm a tiny bit irritated that I can hook my Quest 1 up to my PC very simply and play HL:A with everything cranked, yet am locked out from RE:4VR. It seems a little arbitrary. I guess they want a big app to sell V2's for Christmas though and wouldn't be surprised if it becomes available later down the line.

But that's not in anyway a fair comparison. HL:A is reliant on the processing power of your PC, whereas RE:4VR is native so requires the extra processing power of the Quest 2 headset.

It would like me being miffed that I can't play HL:A on my Quest 1 because my laptop isn't powerful enough to run it.

It wasn't really meant to be a perfectly fair comparison, more an observation that I find it odd that you can get something so visually incredible on the QV1 but be locked out of a port of a 17 year old game. I fully understand the reasons why just as I fully understand that the only limitation is there by design and could be bypassed by a little cable.

it's only by design if they've got it ported for PC desktop VR, right? I could be wrong but that feels like it would be more work than targeting a single-spec Quest 2. Unless the Oculus Rift libraries are more or less the same thing.

why not release it for oculus rift the Quest 1 and Quest 2 owners can play it.

It is exclusive to one headset that Oculus make - when one other is perfectly capable (rift) and the other can stream it - that is ridiculous and taking exclusivity too far.

When MS brought out the Xbox One X (a more powerful iteration of the current gen) they didn't have Xbox One X games that wouldn't work on One S or even Xbox One.

Well you could say the same about any exclusive. Why make PS5 exclusive games when you could have it on the PS4 and PC? Also I (and I assume you) have literally no idea how easy it is to just make a PC version of this. It's obviously been built from the ground up to run natively on the Quest 2 hardware.
