Oculus Quest

You can use the Oculus store too, for Rift games. Dunno how long they'll bother with that now! But they work great over Link. Also Sidequest. And of course you can get Steam codes from other stores such as Humble.

Steam games that aren't Rift compatible will sort of work, they're quite rare I think anyway, but sometimes the controls won't be right. I got pretty much stuck straight away with that early space station disaster game because of that, Adrift or whatever it's called.

They aren't PC only but Elite Dangerous and Star Wars Fighters (or whatever it's called, the recent EA one), are both visual treats in VR. Driving games will also give you some fun sense of presence, especially with a wheel.

Thanks. And is there a way I can buy a game and get both its quest version and its rift version in case I want to go cable free?

Edit: I'm guessing if I buy it on the Oculus Rift Store then I get access to both versions?

And I assume that the Quest Link versions will sometimes have better visuals as its being driven by the PC?

Yeah cross buy is a bit of a minefield, check everything first! Eg Moss is a big name that is not cross buy.

And generally with a game like Moss is it better visually to play on Quest link? Or is it very much game by game? For example I know Tetris Effect on Quest is quite cut down but I assume if I play it through Quest Link it will be a better version?

As far as I've seen the link version will always be better visually, yeah. Often it's pretty minor but even something visually simple like Ultrawings you can spot the difference.

If it's seated I go for the Link version, if it's moving about or likely to want to play elsewhere then the tetherless standalone has a bit more potential appeal.

Moss looks just fine on the Quest. I don't think you'd be losing anything by playing it natively.

That said, it's predominantly a sitting experience, and doesn't gain from being able to move around freely.

I tend to pick the freedom of wireless over the better graphics of a wired connection. Having said that, Airlink/Virtual Desktop is the best of both worlds if your wifi/PC can deliver good results. Mine works pretty much perfectly using the default Vodafone fibre hub, with a wired connection to my PC. Quest is connected to the 5GHz band only.

Even then I mostly play Quest native games, as half the time I can't be bothered turning on the PC. I only really miss the better graphics on Robo Recall and Walking Dead.

I still haven't played Alyx, and I suspect it'll change my opinion somewhat, but waiting for SteamVR to do its thing is just enough faff that I'll typically choose Quest native all the time.

Btw, Crisis Vrigade 2 now supports multiplayer. So get that. It's lots of fun coordinating lying on the floor blind-firing over pallets.

Forgive me if I'm being naive but, considering Oculus has some connections with Microsoft (bundled early versions with an xbox controller), why the hell is this not fully integrated into the xbox infrastructure (gamepass, friends list, achievements etc.) and sold as the equivalent of PSVR?

I'd buy it tomorrow if that was the case...

Thanks for the recommendation on the VR Wave lenses - used mine earlier today on the Quest 2 and it was a revelation.

Also managed to get app sharing working on the Quest 1 so me and Mrs B played three Walkabout Golf courses and it was genuinely brilliant. Really did feel like we were playing the real thing. Would be up for a few online games at some point. We should start a league!

I have an idea that I wonder if anyone would be willing to talk me into or out of.

I have a Switch & PS4 Pro but while I play & enjoy a lot of Switch games PS4 ones just kinda leave me cold.  I have physical copies of God of War, Final Fantasy 15 & I just downloaded the Bloodline expansion for Watch Dogs Legion but I just don't feel inclined to even start any of them up.  Big spectacle games like that just don't seem to interest me like they did during the PS2/3 era & I crave new gameplay experiences/ways to play rather than just shiner graphics.

And so, my idea.  I was thinking of trading my PS4 Pro for an Oculus Quest 2 as games like Moss, Superhot & Beat Sabre look like the kind of new experiences I've been craving, & I can always get a PS5 later when they become easier to obtain.

So good idea, or bad idea?

Good idea.  Just be prepared to spend a fair bit on the games as the Oculus store isn't the cheapest place but they do have sales and discount codes often.

I want to get Quest 2 but I'm convinced I heard there's another version coming out later this year. Am I going mad?

There was talk of a Quest Pro at some point, separate to a direct 'sequel'. I don't think I've seen any concrete details.

I was looking that up myself, estimates are mid to late 2022 for Quest 3, based on the cycle between 1&2.

Yeah, there's no sign of anything later this year at the moment. If you want to buy, @strider, I wouldn't wait. The longer you do, the more likely it is that you'll end up in that no man's land waiting for the unknown release date for more powerful hardware.

Bad idea I'd say. I like the quest 2 but there's not that many GREAT games. And a lot of the games are overpriced in my opinion.

There are plenty of brilliant games on ps4 that aren't the big mainstream AAA stuff (far more than on quest). Watch Dogs Legion is one of the most meh games ever.

Finally got around to setting up my Quest 2 last night after it sitting in the corner for a few weeks (essay marking and trial reviewing an HTX Vive Pro2 got in the way) only for the latest update to bork it. No library found and the shop hangs on a spinning circle on the buy/download options :( Think it's fixed with an update now so charging it to check.

Having now tried out the big boy VR headset I definitely prefer the lightweight Quest 2, especially for ease of use. The room size needed to set up the Vive isn't very practical - especially as it's static camera receivers. Maybe not so bad if your PC is in the lounge connected to your TV but no use in a home office/gaming room. The resolution and picture quality is better on the Vive but then it's four times the price and a whole lot less convenient to use. Hoping that a competitor will go for a wire free alternative to Quest just to avoid the Facebook integration (although I'm now tied into that with prior purchases) so that the range of games can increase.

i dont know how easy/cheap it is to get hold of psvr these days but those games are on ps4 if thats an option.

I considered PSVR, but the need for extra components like the PS Camera, Move controllers & extra wires for Data/Power put me off.  Like the Oculus Go before it I like the idea of a self contained unit that has a degree of portability in case I need to take it to another room with greater floor space or closer to the main router.

PSVR isn't too bad as most people have their system in the largest room but I totally get where you're coming from with the wires etc. I had been lusting after a crazy expensive PCVR until I got to try out the Vive and realised I just don't have the space in my gaming setup to make use of it. The Quest works brilliantly for PCVR through Link cable (was a bit fiddly at first but they've improved it massively) which suits me - and I have yet to try out Air Link which sounds like magic. The library is a lot more focused (Limited?) than PSVR (or even PCVR if that is usable for you) though so it depends on whether there's enough there to keep you entertained.

Went to my cousins a few weeks back. He and his mate had never tried VR so took the Quest up. Missus bought them that Darth Vader Episode 1 thing as a surprise as they're both insane Star Wars geeks.

Their absolute fucking delight made me so damn happy. Literal minds blown for both. They wouldn't shut up about it for like 2 nights and both went through it a couple times. One of them even took a mad power stance first time he met Vader, pissing our sides.

His mate tried Half Life Alyx. Man went off at the whole reload/back pack thing and when the Strider went over him he nearly knelt down in awe. His mate wouldn't try teleportation though and got queasy after 30 minutes or so.

First Steps was also rinsed a lot.

Long term until its up to close to, or similar PC spec kinda visuals, it's not for me as a continual thing. But seeing others absolutely go off when they try it is worth everything.

Still a touch too blurry for me and due to my fucked eyes, lenses are like 350 quid. I'm hyped for the future of VR though.

Anyone else found there quest 2 been gathering dust recently?

Seem to notice a trend of shovelware titles being released on quest store in recent time, with quality releases drying up.

To be honest I'm not that bothered about VR on warmer days anyway, but be nice to see some quality quest games coming our way in the following months.

All I can see on the horizon is After the fall and next part of star wars galaxies/Jurassic park. Anything else of interest anyone spotted?
