Avengers: Endgame - BIG SPOILERS TOPIC - You have been warned!

Similar here. Avoided spoilers since April, don’t do the cinema much anymore. I watched it last week, and it passed the time, but was disappointed overall. Felt much the same about all the Avengers films bar the first one, which I really like (Whedon factor maybe). I get excited for them and admire the spectacle, but never really find them that engaging. But then Deadpool is by far my favourite supes film.

You watched approximately 20 movies, roughly 40 hours worth of your time, and at the very end you decided “nah fuck it, cant be arsed with the next hour to find out how this concludes”? The mind boggles.

Endgame isn’t reeeeeally the “conclusion” of the entire MCU so far. It’s the conclusion to Infinity War, sure, but most of the other movies have perfectly satisfying conclusions of their own (barring a thirty second coda of “ooh who’s the purple guy”). You’re not  really left hanging.

There is an over arching narrative that is concluded.  Anyone paying attention would surely want to see that resolved?

It's not the end of the MCU no, but it is for certain characters. It's very much a conclusion of what was started between 2008 and 2012.

I felt similarly when I watched it. It's a slow burn, and pretty confusing at times - like I'd forgotten what had happened in the stinger at the end of ant-man and the wasp so I was totally confused as to how he was even there, had to go look it up which took me out of it a bit. I even left it at the halfway mark as it was late and it seemed like it had an awfully long time to go at the pace, which is probably a first as far as my filmwatching goes. 

 

Watched the second half the next night and it was ABSOLUTELY FUCKING AMAZING and I was kicking myself for not sticking with it because it'd have woken me right up just from the sheer exhilaration of it all.

I watched this again for the first time since seeing at the cinema at the weekend. I really liked the closure that some of the characters got in the second act but the third act really is superb. It really did feel like an immensely satisfying conclusion to 22 films worth of investment. In particular, the moment from "on your left" to when Cap delivers his line had the hairs on my skin standing on end. Even now actually.

Fab movie. A little slower than Infinity war but the character beats are fantastic. Didn't love Nebula, and Thor was lame and the Cap v Cap fight was daft. But pretty much everything else was fucking fantastic. And I'm not a massive MCU fan. This and infinity war are just fantastic Sci Fi movies.

Only just got round to watching this too. Not a huge MCU fanboy - found it quite enjoyable though, although I would still say Thor 3 is my overall fave.

It's a mostly decent movie, it just has pacing issues. I thought Infinity Wars was a much more satisfying film.

 

The final act full of fan service was amazing and one of the best action scenes from a Marvel film, even if a bit too much was going on!

 

I doubt it would fit into my top 5 Marvel movies.

Okay then, I finally saw this today. I still haven't seen Captain Marvel or Spider-Man: Homecoming but otherwise I think I was up to date? Mostly? Anyway.

 

I thought the first two thirds was absolutely wonderful, and surprisingly emosh. Wasn't expecting them to deal/avenge themselves on Thanos quite as soon as they did but then it became apparent why and I was fully on board. Seeing the sad, haunted state most people were in was easily the most interesting thing in a Marvel film to date and I kind of wish they spent more time/films dwelling on it because it's a fascinating (and horrifying) concept. Ant Man and Nebula in particular were the heart of this for me, the way both characters have progressed throughout their films has been great, and rather unexpected. Obviously, Thor also leant some emotional heft to things too but it's a bit jarring for me the way he's flittered through about 5 different personas over the course of his last few appearances, often being far too comical and lacking the kind of dignity and heroism I associate with him, but that's more my hang up and preconception I guess. Seeing Banner plead with the divine goddess Tilda was a surprise, and a delight at that, as was the shenanigans in the lobby of Avengers tower. Basically, I could have watched them Bill & Ted their way through the previous films all day.

 

The final act didn't do as much for me, simply because I find most of these big CGI action fests utterly exhausting these days and kind of tune out when the screen is full of concrete getting smashed and blue lights are shooting up into the sky. Even so, the final showdown between Thanos and the lads was great and it was ace to see the joy on Thor's face when Cap picks up Mjolnir and lays down the piss with it.

 

As for the resolution, not exactly a surprise but nicely delivered all the same. The good thing about the films is that they can give characters a final send off and while Nat's was kind of underwhelming, Tony and Cap's were pretty much perfect and satisfying.

 

All in all, good stuff but I am mostly done with the genre for the forseeable I think, barring the occasional playful exception like Ant-Man (can't get enough of that whole Hot Wheels case full of cars/throwing 8ft salt shakers/turning buildings into suitcases gimmick).

This however is like the biggest Fuck You ever. All the puffed up importance is gone. Instead we have daft scenes, Back to the Future references and fat Thor. I love it! That this over indulgent nonsense is the most successful film of all time tickles my hang lows like gangbusters. I'm only an hour in and I want to have its babies! Yes I'm drunk! Tip the veil and push your waitress! I only saw The Wizard of Oz for the first time last week!

Let me spell this out for you nice and simply. I’m just bashing out the odd post without thinking about it too much. I’m really not analysing the content of my posts as much as you seem to be, or taking the responsibility of making a brief comment on a Marvel movie very seriously. Because it really doesn’t matter, and whilst I’m sure the two of you are very impressed by each other being so very mature about all this, I’m not really thinking of threads discussing generic mainstream movies as very serious discussions.

 

Enjoy your smug superiority though, I’m hoping for lots more responses from you two questioning my joy levels and achievement plans and stuff.

Maybe if it was a few years ago in one of the fun marvel threads I guess. But this is a serious marvel film for serious grownups, seriously considering the emotional weight of that bit at the start where everyone kept saying “I’m sad”.

I’m pretty sure it’s Vision; no-one will remember Quicksilver. It took me reading some ‘easter egg’ clickbait to realise the lanky teenager I didn’t recognise at Stark’s funeral was the kid from Iron Man 3, and that doesn’t seem anywhere near as long ago as AoU.

 

I’ve watched this film again a few times on TV after seeing it at the cinema and it’s really grown on me. Not that I disliked it first time, but I preferred the bombast of IW on first viewing. This one has

more feels though, and it’s a grand send-off for characters I’ve spent a lot of time watching over the years.
