Avengers: Endgame - BIG SPOILERS TOPIC - You have been warned!

Phew, finally made it to the end of this thread! Although I'm surprised that not one post has addressed my own sticking point about the cap ending.

Symbolically giving the shield to someone else is all well and good, but how does that transfer the role of Captain America? It's just something he uses (sometimes), it doesn't give him any power. All Falcon can do is pilot a jet pack - without that he'd just be a normal bloke with a flashy shield. Needs super serum surely.

Also I'm not clear where that shield came from because Thanos broke it and Tony (who I think made it) was not around any more to fix it.

What's surprising me is people are actually asking these questions genuinely, and seeing them as serious plot holes. Talk about a serious lack of imagination.

I think the 'how can Sam be Captain America?' question is fairly justified, given that there was a whole movie dedicated to showing us how Steve was physically enhanced to be a super soldier.

I don't think it's a question that needs an answer other than "because it's just a title/symbolic".

Sam/Falcon is already an Avenger. Like Iron Man, he's a normal person with tech and skills.

Now he's also Captain America, a title passed on to him. He doesn't need to be super strong as well, but maybe he'll learn some shield-throwing skills to add to his "piloting a set of mechanical wings" repertoire. :)

He’s called “Captain America”, not “Captain Super-Strength and Speed”

It’s a title, a symbol. A mantle to pass on.

So we'll still have a cap in the Avengers, but he won't be any good in a fight?

edit - just saw the other reply - so this means he will keep using his Falcon wings but wearing the stars and stripes suit? I don't follow the comics so sorry if this is a dumb question.

I dont think they're done with Steve Rogers Cap, despite the ending of Endgame. I mean, he's come back in the comics after he was old (super serum was wearing off if I remember right), and Rogers is a well known symbol in the mcu. I can see him turning up at the end of a future film as the surprise hero to beat the villain or something. Give it enough time, and films, and I think it'll happen.

Would they get away with someone else playing Steve Rogers so soon? Presumably Chris Evans has moved on from the role.

The rumoured plot of The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Disney+ TV show is about the US government wanting someone of their choosing to pick up the mantle of Captain America, not Sam. Apologies if this has already been covered up-thread.

Ooh. I wonder if we'll get a blond, nutty flat top sporting John Walker who goes onto to become U.S. Agent?

I wouldnt count Chris Evans out just yet. He's the face of Captain America now, and is pretty recognisable. Cap turning up in some surprise appearance wouldnt work if it wasnt Chris Evans imo.

  • 3 weeks later...

Watched this again the other day. It’s like a trip down Avengers memory lane, the greatest hits. Didn’t really think that first time round. Enjoyed it still though. Shame in a way they nerfed Hulk and Thor so much. The bit where Thanos is sitting outside school waiting for a fight is kind of awkward. The bit where hulk is holding up all the fallen building reminded me of that secret wars comic where he’s doing the same under a mountain. It could have been a hint as to how strong he can really be depending on the circumstances but I don’t think that scene really got it across well, they were just squirming underground for a bit until regular sized man turns big.

Watched this last night as a rental. My wife and I got an hour and a half into it before we agreed we were both bored as batshit. Half way into it and nothing really grabbed us. I'd managed to ignore any spoilers about the film and was looking forward to seeing it.

We were going to watch the second half this morning but I think I'm going to clean the windows of the house instead.

Meh etc.

What did you think of Infinity War? After seeing it, how curious were you to find out what happened next?

I ask because it sounds like it didn't get you invested enough to seek out Endgame at the cinema.

I tend not to go to the cinema anymore; the experience for me is... Different now. In the past when I had a Cineworld card I saw over 70 films in a year. Now I'm lucky if I go once a year. Though I did go to see the final cut of Apocalypse Now a few weeks ago.

Infinity War seemed all over the place and I felt like I should have rewatched everything before seeing it. As it stands I think the only one I've not seen is Dr Strange. Speaking to friends this morning about it they had me down as someone who just wasn't into Marvel but I really enjoyed Ironman 1 & 3, the Thor films and Captain America (as well as Guardian's).

I wanted to see Endgame to get some closure to the series and I'd gone to great measures to avoid work place spoilers and all that shit. But last night both of us were sitting with some wine and assorted nibbles looking forward to it and then...fttt.

Horses for courses and all that.
