Avengers: Endgame - BIG SPOILERS TOPIC - You have been warned!

Thought I'd start this topic. Not really sure it's needed as most people are good with spoilers, but it's here if you want it...

 

I haven't seen it yet - going this afternoon - but I'll be back tonight to discuss things in more detail.

One day, watching Captain Marvel beat up spaceships might get old. But it hasn't yet.

I was amazed at the amount of gigantic actors that they got in for tiny bit parts. Natalie Portman who didn't want anything more to do with Marvel. Robert Redford arguing over a suitcase. Michelle Pfeiffer and Angela Bassett literally just standing there.

 

Also, 70's Stan Lee was perfection.

Portman was re-used footage from Dark World. But yes, Redford, Grillo and the other Hydra guys showing up was a nice surprise.

Emaciated angry Tony at the start was really intense. A million miles away from the guy we saw in the Iron Man trilogy.

So many of the "best bits" (in a film full of them) seemed to belong to Cap. 

 

Case in point - the moments immediately around "I KNEW IT!" and "On your left" are probably among the very best (for me) that I've ever seen in a cinema, but then there's still "Hail Hydra", "I know, I know", "America's ass", and so on.

 

Considering he wasn't a character I was too interested in before all of this ("this" being the MCU, not Endgame), Cap's been up there for me for years now, largely thanks to Chris Evans, and Winter Soldier and Civil War are two of my absolute favourites in the MCU.

 

I couldn't be happier about how he got to bow out, either - no-one deserved it more.

That was all bullshit anyway. Thanos told Gamora that her planet was much better off and yet Guardians of the Galaxy says that she's the only person left from her race.

Impressed that they stuck with the five years later angle.  I always thought we would likely see some sort of time jump and then some time travel but always presumed we would end effectively at or before the initial snap in Infinity War. That we're still five years in the future and have just brought half the population back to life, well that creates some interesting consequences.  I am not sure if the MCU will dwell on these consequences but it would be nice to see them addressed.  How would you feel to be snapped out of existence, then with no passage of time return five years into your future to see you husband shacked up with a new partner and someone else living in your house. The MCU world also looks like a bit of a mess at this point.  It is big balls to keep it in the future, albeit with everyone back and I do hope future films make interesting use of the new status quo. @loathsomeleopard actually raises some better points in his external write up linked to - this resolution of the snap storyline will cause some serious issues.  Half of Peter's schoolfriends are now grown up.  People flying on a place have been presumably snapped back to 15,000 feet and are not free falling to their deaths (their planes either crashed or landed five years ago) although perhaps we can assume that Banner accounted for this stuff with his snap.  Even so governments have changed, infrastructure is closed or crumbling, family friends have either moved on or possibly died since.  This is really quite a big step to make and it almost feels like Marvel should address it in some way if this version of the MCU will continue. 

 

Also impressed at the twist and turns we saw with characters returning or not returning. Our Gamora was not brought back but we got a Gamora from a different time (well, the first GOGT Gamora anyway).  Loki also could now potentially be back in play but not the one we saw die in the first film.  Vision, maybe slightly surprisingly is not back.  I know there was speculation he may have survived the snap in any event. Did we see Shuri? We always thought the snap victims would be back but they creatively dealt with some of the pre-snap victims. 

 

Cameos, lots of great cameos from previous films - too many to list. The best being the craw from Winter Solider. Who did not come back?  Portman looked like stock footage.  No Hopkins either.  Was really hoping for something for Agent Coulson, either in the final 'group' scene or in the past. Idris Elba too also not seen. 

 

Speaking of Coulson, this places Agents of Shield into a bit of a pickle.  We thought they were holding back for the summer to avoid the snap issue.  But they now either have to jump forward five years or being taking place in the snap world. I hppe it is the latter.  Would be great to explore these five years in greater detail. 

 

Korg's back and survived the initial snap anyway.  Great news and loved his scene. Valkerie also looks like a new permanent presence and a very welcome one. 

 

The massive ending battle was great but the actual setting was disappointing. Dark, smoky wasteland and not really very visually interesting at all.  It's great because of the characters but the setting is nothing compared to New York or Wakanda in previous Avenger films. Handwaving them all back to Wakanda may have been better than in the rubble of Avengers headquarters. 

 

Someone mentioned that they seemed to create new gaultlet's for the stones easily.  But their Gauntlet's still impact them physically a lot when used.  I imagine the proper gauntlet might have helped them a lot. 

 

Time travel and timelines eh?  Not sure you can really make much sense of what happened or what may have changed the timeline. They seem to say that nothing in the past will change the future.  Does it create alternative timelines? Loki escaping is a big change although Cap does go and put everything back, does this reset any possible changes? 

 

Loved the big with all the female heroes.  Marvel at one stage did have a female representative problem but it is getting there towards addressing it.  Too on the nose? Not for me. 

 

Thor was great, was hoping we'd see short hair in shape Thor by the end.  Surely he's back in the next GOTG film?  Bannerhulk was alright, too much of Banner though?  Did we get any really great Hulk smash moments? 

 

The endings of Stark and Cap were both amazing and perfect in their own ways.  Pleased that in some ways they got happy endings, Stark got married and had a kid and Cap went back and lived out a life with Carter. 

 

All the snap victims got a moment to shine which was good but this was really about featuring the original Avengers and passing the baton and it worked well. 

 

So, Tony is dead, Cap is retired and we've lost Black Widow and Vision.  The first two are probably retired from the franchise for the foreseeable future but the latter two?  Quill was searching for 'his' Gamora when we last saw him.  If he finds her, he finds Widow...

 

No post credit scene but did it need one?  Probably not.  Very touching to see the original actors sign off their roles, some of which perhaps for good. 

 

Loads more thoughts in due course.  It really is a big film to unpick.  A really amazing experience and a great conclusion to this part of the MCU.  If not for money, I'd have been really happy to see this be the final chapter of the MCU and to retire this version of the film franchise. 

 

Edit: Stolen from Den of Geek - there was one, well at least one character at the funeral who I did not recognise - the 20 year old slightly emo kid.  Turns out it was the same actor who played the kid Tony befriends in Iron Man 3.  Knowing that they got the actor back is a really nice touch and actually adds even more emotion to that scene.

Hulk disappointed me in every film except Assemble and Ragnarok to be honest, they just totally misused the character, the scene with his arm in a sling, come on this is fucking Hulk, The same Hulk who can literally destroy a planet, he has no ceiling to his strength and rage, using the Gauntlet should have just made him angry because of the pain, he should have literally smashed Thanos around like he did Loki due to the anger, in Planet Hulk he kills off an infestation of flesh eating locusts by letting them feed on his arm, as the pain got worse he got angrier and he healed quicker and quicker, eventually they consumed so much radiation from his flesh they died, ate themselves to death.

 

Hulk should have smashed Thanos.

I know how its meant to be perfect that the MCU started with Iron Man and ends with Iron Man passing away. However, maybe because I'm more comic based but it would have been more fitting for Cap to end it all. Instead we have Iron Man doing it and it seems all sorts of wrong for me, it was only because he's the biggest star of the MCU that this happened.   Instead we have Captain America, the man out of time, part of a team that is their last line of defence against alien / supernatural threats decides he doesn’t want to do this job anymore and takes it upon himself to use a cosmic artefact to go back in time and marry his ex girlfriend he left behind in the 40’s. More importantly messing up the time line too.

 

Captain Marvel was hardly in it, I assume she play a more prominent role but she didn't. When she did she then buggered off and came back later.

After Hulk’s snap I realised all the superheroes who’d been dusted would join the fight. I was hoping that they’d all just gradually arrive in batches and the intensity would ramp up and up, was a tiny bit disappointed that they all came at once although as a result it was rather epic.

Cap getting the hammer was wonderful, as was the lift scene playing out as it did. I'm so impressed they've pulled this off though the pacing was a little off at times.

Only issue i had with this was Captain Marvel. I really don't like her, her character is bland and empty. She has no weight at all and if she wasn't in it, it would have made no difference. They could have easily done something different other than have her find Tony. I know shes only had one movie where her character was completely empty and devoid of empathy.

 

On the other hand you have Nebula, who had a great final arc in this. Killing off her former self quite literally and semblance of emotion. Really like what they did with her.

 

I was a bit torn on Cap turning over the shield to Falcon (Captain African America - Marvel saw that Black Panther money). Would have preferred it went to bucky.

It was a good scene nonetheless.

Her randomly using the armour to get busy in a full-on war-zone was a bit weird.

I really wish Hulk had been given a chance to prove himself against Thanos again. I guess us Hulk fans will always have Ragnarok.

When he learned about Black Window I thought: this is it, this is where the green guy is going to hulk out and really go nuts for real. But it never happened. The gauntlet thing was cool for him though I guess, until he got upstaged. Also, apparently they didn't need Captain Marvel after all when Scarlet Witch can just straight up wipe the floor with Thanos.

 

The bits with Thor and the Guardians in both Infinity War and this are so good though I think I'm actually looking forward to AsGuardian's 3 even more. That cast has been consistently enjoyable to watch.

I agree re the Hulk.  I thought that was a deliberate plot thread left hanging from Infinity War.  He had been beaten there and was afraid to face Thanos again.  I thought that would have a resolution here. In fact, out of everything I am not sure the Hulk arcs in Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame blend together at all well.

Hulk was a bit weird. He’s never been quite as well used as he was in Avengers 1 imo. 

 

Overall i I really liked it. There are things to pick at, but pulling together that many threads into a decent conclusion must have been incredibly difficult and they did a pretty good job.
