PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Having recently finished a replay of TLOU2 I can't see why I would want to replay the first one for the 3rd time let alone pay over £50 for the pleasure. As Kayin says there is a game that is screaming for a remake/remaster and PC port that I would happily fork over whatever they wanted for it if it was shiny and 60fps. Give us Bloodborne not more TLOU.

Of course it was heavily rumoured, so I imagine most of us had an opinion on this one way or the other before it was confirmed. I had zero interest in it previous to the news that it will be available on PC. If a not-entirely-necessary (the game and its DLC already look and plays great on PS4 and presumably also PS5) remake is what it took for this to happen, then I'm happy! I imagine it's safe to presume any changes will be made sensitively. It's probably a bit pointless for anyone who already owns the remastered version of the game, but Sony have probably done sums and made the bet that between PC sales and newcomers who are coming from the HBO series, they will make approximately loadsamoney.

Will be interesting to see how Naughty Dog uses the power of the PS5. Nothing in the footage is in obvious "couldn't be done on PS4" territory. Maybe they'll overhaul their lighting system, with it being less reliant on pre-baking. Could make indoor scenes particularly look a lot more natural. They could make the hotel basement event more terrifying... err, yay?

I kind of hope they don't change the gameplay too much? Joel is an old dude so giving him Ellie's level of mobility, with more verticality in the level design to match, wouldn't make that much sense. Plus I personally think the uncomplicately brutality of the combat works for the story. Joel is very good at killing people, but he doesn't get fancy about it.

I'll probably buy it and I honestly don't give a fuck about other people's buying habits. If you're not interested in it or think it's too expensive, don't buy it.
I haven't played it since 2013 when it came out and while I could play the remaster, I'll happily wait for this. Having combat, level design and AI improvements from Part 2 will be worth it for me, along with current gen bells and whistles like the DualSense ands 3D audio.

I can't see myself bying many AAA games for the remainder of the year (it's probably just this, Ragnarok and The Callisto Protocol), so why not? TLoU is a great game and this will probably be the best it's ever been.

Joel isn't THAT old. Isn't he in his forties or something. Have you seen what Tom Cruise does at age 60? :)
I would love the dodge button in this. Made melee combat in Part II much more satisfying.

Reasons TLoU remake exists:

  • The (promising looking) HBO show is likely to bring in a new audience next year.
  • They're also bringing the game to PC.
  • It'll have all of the second game's transformative accessibility options.
  • They're bringing the mechanics up to par with the second game, as well as the presentation.
  • It gave parts of Naughty Dog something to work on whilst other projects were in different stages of production.

If you don't want to play it or pay full price for it, then don't. Simple.

If he's in his 40s, definitely towards the tail end, given Sarah's age in the prologue. I just think it would be wrong for him to mainly be getting by using anything other than his dad strength.

Hey, back in the day one would import tweaked version of games already bought like Sega Rally Championship Plus for it's analog stick control or Sonic Adventure International or Resident Evil Director's Cut.

In comparison, this is a total deluxe bargain!

I can't wait to play it           at £15 in a sale

If it had the OG factions mode then it'd be worth full price but this habit of Naughty Dog re-releasing games with the entire multiplayer suite excised can fuck off into the sun. UC4 and TLOU RM were two of my most played multiplayer games last gen

Remastered was my first experience of this game - it’s not a day one for me, I’ll wait and see what the reviews say, but I don’t mind buying it for a second time. If this was your third time around, however, I can well understand a deeper level of scepticism.

The first game with PS5-enhanced visuals and the more complex, dynamic combat of the sequel, is an appealing prospect. Too bad we haven’t seen any evidence of either of those things yet.

Stuff like this makes it a bit more clear how it’s been remastered, but there’s still not a whole lot in it. I’m not actually convinced the shot of Ellie is actually from the original version!

(screenshots)

Just goes to show just how good the original looked!

Worth keeping in mind that these are images a couple of hundred pixels tall. I tried buffering the trailer in 4K, and although my internet isn't really up to it, it does leave quite a different impression. The detail on offer is phenomenal. It will probably look incredible at 1080p with downsampling too, but it's just that YouTube's compression at that res leaves a lot to be desired.

That's before we get into HDR. This version of the game will presumably be built from the ground up with the display tech in mind. Again that's not really a difference which screenshots viewed on an internet forum will really capture all that well.

If there is anyone known for not getting the best visuals out of a console, its Naughty Dog.

I think two things are happening here. First, the original game being at end of PS3 lifespan + Naughty Dog already made it look incredible and like a PS4 launch game and lo and behold, it turned into a PS4 launch game with the remastered version. Second, its already a very very dense game with detail so it won't have the stark and obvious transition that Demons Souls did which was a very comparatively bare looking PS3 game compared to TLOU. Thats why the PS5 version of DS looked so insanely next gen.

I mean look here - look how insanely dense with detail and atmosphere this shot is already.

Compare it to the below. The below has much more to is but because the original is already so insanely  detailed and ahead of its time, its hard to appreciate the level of differenceimage.thumb.png.72f7aa05776689c9f3f78010bbd9b3cf.png

I think once its in peoples hands and you get to see and feel the moment to moment difference in gameplay and in environments close up on your 4K tv, it'll earn its graphical keep but for now it won't impress. If you look up actual combat gameplay of TLOU you can see how that is beginning to look dated in comparison to the wide city shots and cut scenes which focus in on the detail

Bad trailer for TLOU remake. They really needed to blow our bollocks off with how good it looked, especially considering the comical price point, or show some new areas/gameplay, but as it stands it just looks a bit sharper and nicer than the original.

I've only ever played the original version, and then only once. I loved it, but found it quite harrowing. So by the time this comes out I might be ready to experience it again. Not too concerned by the price either, for something I'd get dozens of hours out of. In all I give this news four screaming fungus zombies out of five.

I was on the Xbox side until PS5, so actually looking forward to this.

In that case you’re in for an absolute treat, but you can probably pick up the already incredible looking ps4 remaster version for pennies, if it’s not available for free on psplus.

I'm actually glad the improvements are so subtle. I was expecting character likenesses/voice acting changes to tie it better to the upcoming TV series, and basically have it reskinned to mirror the HBO version.

This feels much better - the systems and lighting of Part 2 retroactively added to Part 1. It's still the first game in feel and story, but with updated mechanics. Perfect. So glad that the graphical improvements are so measured. Halo 1 on the 360 shows how these kind of things can go so wrong when graphical changes are made for the sake of it.

Of course the £70 price tag is a stupid mistake by Sony. There's just no way it takes as much time and money to build a remake on incredibly solid foundations then it does to build totally original content - and there should be 2 price bands in their 1st party range to reflect this.

But I have to say that for myself, this is the game that will actually make me buy a PS5. It's just such an amazing game world, probably the best I've ever experienced, and the idea of not revisiting it in its most perfect form is something I can't countenance.

Ouch. Suppose they'll try and get away with as much as they can and probably testing the water a bit and seeing what the market will tolerate.

There will be some newer gamers out there who won't have played it at all I guess. Question is if you'd never played it before is it worth £70? Well when I get it on PS3 all those years ago it was more than worth the £40 (45?) I paid for it back then. So I'd say easily. Not so much if you've played it before though.

I think everyone with a PS5 and PS Plus already has access to it via the PS Plus Collection.

Yeah I was actually convinced it was gonna be a £40 price point until I started seeing people talking about it being a full price release. It is taking the piss seeing as all the performance capture , which is a massive part of the game , is being reused. And it’s not like they have to develop the story or the locations etc . It’s gonna have to have some pretty hefty changes to justify that price point .

all moot of course because they could charge £100 for this and I would still be day one .
