PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

I think people wanted to get really excited about something new. They wanted to convince themselves that there was an exciting game changing element to their hobby.

Can’t really blame them but reality was always likely to be that the best that could be hoped for was first party pulling a blinding feedback experience out the bag once in a while.

Finally got to try someone elses PS5 Dual sense on my console side by side and... it wasn't broken. The effect is just crap  I don't understand what all these reviewers were getting so excited about. It's a joke how responsive it is and even on full pelt it just feels too weak. Were they maybe supplied better pads by Sony for the vids? I love Digital Foundry but from their footage on it, was like the second coming of controllers.

Try it again, but with the mic muted.

@Yiggy @partious

Why would you base your conclusions on this one negative impression, rather than the widespread positive response? There's not much rationale there beyond confirmation bias, you understand.

It's also disrespectful to frame those who shared positive experiences as wilfully ignoring reality, simply to fit the narrative you've chosen. You see the irony.

Merry Christmas.

Relax, I didn't conclude anything about the ps5 controller, just said I found the impression interesting. I stand by my appraisal of switch hd rumble.

Merry Christmas to you too :)

I left the rumble on for Astrobot but it added very little IMHO. Rather than "OMG it feels like grains of sand blowing across the controller" it was more like "oh this is supposed to feel like grains of sand blowing across the controller - I guess it kinda does. Sort of". Fun gimmick if you happen to like it, but I think it's important to realize it's just a bonus on top of everything else. I've turned the rumble off because it didn't add anything for me (it was the opposite of immersive for me - it distracted) but it's had ZERO impact on the games themselves. Miles and Demon's (and uhm EDF5 and Last Guardian lol) are just as great without rumble.

Don't feel like you need a PS5 to experience da rumble. In fact, I would lower expectations to avoid disappointment after all the over the top clickbait hype from journos. You buy the PS5 for the games, if you happen to be impressed by da rumble then that's a fun bonus on top. Console is equally worth it even if you turn all that off like me.

WRC9 - Handling, braking and acceleration feel different depending on surface and condition of your car. I was always a fan of the XB1 implementation with FH3 & 4 but this is another level entirely.

COD- Each gun feels tangibly different when firing, trigger resistances and feel also vary. Substantial difference to the PS4 version which feels like WUB WUB WUB.

Demon's - Weapons are markedly different, you can feel the varying sense of weight, movement and impact, as well as some unusual subtle effects for spells.

FIFA - Individual players tire at different rates, with varying resistance on sprint telling you the degree. Different physical impacts, pass, tackle, jostle, shoot feel quite different.

Astrobot - Gimmicky, but shows the breadth of possibilities, too many examples to list.

Miles/S-M:R - Subtle but effective, gives an extra dynamic tangibility to movement which you don't have on the PS4.

AC Valhalla - fuck all of note.

Fenyx - fuck all of note.

I'm no great advocate for rumble but this is the experience of someone who had no interest in it, no particular interest in any next gen consoles, and little interest in 95% of games these days. I'm very far from being drawn in by the hype.

Well, I’m still hyped by the feedback. Really want it to be in more games and I enjoy the implementations of it so far.

Then again, I also prefer the Switch version of Hollow Knight because its feedback implementation is so much better than the bland single rumble effect on PS4. Really hope Silksong is getting a PS5 version for that.  :D

It's great that it's there and hopefully more devs will use it effectively beyond just Sony first party studios. I'm not impressed by it, but I can simply turn it off and for those who like it, it would be great if it's implemented properly in multiplatform titles too. My point was mostly that even if you set aside the dual sense rumble, the PS5 is still worth getting - it doesn't take anything away from justifying the purchase. If you like it, it's an awesome bonus on top of everything else so there's no need to worry about whether it's as good as the hype suggests. And no need to get defensive about it if someone doesn't like it (not aimed at anyone here, just in general)

As someone who hasn't tried the controller yet, this is interesting to read.

I remember before the switch came out/immediately after launch the media hype merchants and early adopters were making out like the joycon's "hd rumble" was some totally gamechanging and revolutionary advancement, claiming that it made you think you were holding some specific object (not a joycon) in your hands etc, when in reality it's genuinely rubbish and nobody even mentions it anymore.

The HD rumble in 1-2 Switch was mind blowing - proper wizardry. But then no other developers did anything with it - not even Nintendo.

It struck me more as a solution looking for a problem. Something that works well in a proof of concept demo but which game makers haven’t translated into play experiences - for whatever reasons.

I thought the DualSense feedback on Astro's Playroom was every bit as impressive as previews had led me to believe. The shoulder button stuff in particular, especially the click and crumble of the climbing sections, was both satisfying and genuinely helpful for feeling out that sweetspot on brittle boulders.

Astro makes great use of the speaker too, enhancing the effect of different surfaces. I generally play games on very low volume though, so the controller audio, set to medium, often gives me a wee fright.

I have barely noticed the DualSense feedback in Demon's Souls and I expect that'll be the case for most games outside of racing or the big budget gun adverts.

Personally I think the Dual Sense is brilliant. Playing PS4 games on it with bog standard buzz and triggers feels like a genuine step back. The build quality is much higher , especially over the V1 DS4 - at this point the sticks were shredding and the warranty sticker had scratched off to nothing. Even the USB C connection knocks the crappy fragile mini usb into next week.

As someone who is holding out on buying a PS5 for the time being it’s quite nice how this thread has gone from FOMO town to looking like a tech support inbox.

Makes refreshing stock informer “just to check” less painful anyway

Does feel like a lot of it needed longer in the oven.

I totally agree that the controller is a huge improvement over the okay-but-flimsy DS4.

The only technical issue I’ve had with my ps5 so far is controllers sometimes not connecting properly. Lights but no action.

Quickly solved with a reset but irritating.

Equally I still haven’t connected an external drive out of pure fear, so that might be removing one of the more flakey areas!

15 mins into Spiderman MM and mine has just hung during a cut scene and then shut itself down totally. And now won't power up at all..

Following the precedent they set with Cyberpunk I look forward to Sony pulling "The PS5" from all stores and offering refunds.

The PS5 controller, in Astro’s Playroom, is incredible. The haptics and the speaker and rumble are all amazing and genuinely add to the game. Feeling individual hailstones hit different bits of the controller is unbelievable.

I know 99% of games will never exploit these features in any meaningful way, but that doesn’t detract from how incredible it is.

The speaker is waaaaay better than I was expecting. It’s far more like a proper speaker than the crap ones in the Wii and PS4 controllers.

To be fair that is the first hard crash I have had but it was a little scary and I need to remove the power cable for a while and then reboot / hard drive check seems to have resolved it. For now..

Anyone know where I can get the Spider-Man remaster (without MM)? It’s $20 on the US store but it’s not on the UK one as a stand-alone, only as DLC.

You can't buy it separately, even on the US store I think it's listed but you have to own MM first.

Hmm just come to power on this morning via the controller.  Controller comes on solid blue.  PS5 sat there with flashing orange light and that's it.  If you press the disk eject button it beeps and nothing happens, if you press or hold the power button nothing happens.  Guess I am going to have to try the power cable again but I suspect this is due to setting it in rest mode instead of turning it off overnight.  I have had zero issues with doing this previously so perhaps this is more of an issue with MM.

And.. its back.  Yeah - I shall power down I think from now on.

Yeah, my frustratingly slow dashboard has also vanished after leaving the PS5 off all night rather than leaving it in Rest mode. I think I’ll be doing that until they’ve put a few more updates out.

Yeah, I considered that. Just want to know if it’s possible without doing that.

I should just buy the whole kerboodle but find it hard to justify £60 on a game.

Miles is absolutely worth the price, my favourite game of the last 2 years easily.
