PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Anyway to stop the game specific music that plays when you highlight games on the dashboard? I don't want to turn all system music off as i quite like the soothing menu sounds but when you go on a game's page some of the music seems obnoxiously loud for some reason.

Also have we seen the end of themes? RIP my Firewatch theme, we had a good few years together!

The pause between pressing the PS button and getting the bottom menu ribbon up is annoyingly just too long.

I've been noticing the same thing but I'm sure it wasn't like this at launch. I remember it all being very smooth and slick but recently the activity cards and bottom menu bar feel like they take longer to load in properly.

When you say there’s a delay.......how long are we talking? I’d not noticed anything so just checked. It’s pretty much instant on mine.

Had my second little issue earlier though. Tried to launch WRC9 and it started up but then I got an error message telling me there was a problem with the app. Sent a report then reloaded and it seemed to be fine. Hopefully stays that way!

It still bakes my noodle. I just can’t get used to it.

When I want to turn it off I still even now hold the button down and go “....wtf”

It is a pain but imagine you are Japanese with swapped Cross and Circle after 4 previous generations of muscle memory...

Does everyone’s PS5 emit a sound whilst in rest mode? Sounds like there’s constantly a fan on when it’s resting. It’s pretty quiet and I don’t hear it when watching TV but when the house is silent I can hear it.

Yeah. occasionally, if it's downloading something in rest mode or charging controllers I can hear a faint hum if the room is totally silent.

For the lols I just googled 'Coil Whine' as it's a term that has been banded about the internet since the PS5 launch - here's an extreme example - first hit on Youtube

If I had any electronics that made that kind of noise I'd send them back immediately! My PS5 does not sound anything like this either whilst doing in rest mode or during play... Thank god!

Think that is what people are calling "coil whine". Is it quite high pitched? Mine does the same.

No it’s not high pitched. It’s barely noticeable. It’s similar to a sky box when it’s recording to the hard drive or something. Just some noise rather than the absence of noise (like a PS4 in rest mode).

It's just a little bit longer than instant whereas before it felt instant. It's not a huge deal but it's enough to be annoying when you're trying to navigate to the bottom menu bar but you can't because it hasn't loaded yet.

Are physical game sales for PS5 poor?

I only ask as Puyo Puyo 2 is £20 after about a week, The Pathless is £34.99 at Smyth's (£10 off after a week), Godfall is £44.99 on Amazon and Dirt 5 was reduced really quickly too.

Obviously great for the gamer but I'd be interested to see the physical / digital split for software.

Well, how many can they sell if people can't get a console to play them on.

Puyo Puyo 2 is obviously going to struggle at anything more than £20. The Pathless is essentially free on Apple Arcade and going on what I’ve played of it, should be about £20 tops on PS5. I’m guessing Godfall hasn’t sold well, as it’s not reviewed well and is up against big games like Spider-Man, Demon’s Souls and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Dirt 5 is cross gen and looks massively underwhelming and hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in terms of reviews either. People probably are buying Digital or online because of Covid and a lot of stuff is getting reduced online because of Christmas sales.

I have a disc version and haven't put one in it yet - I finished Control on it first (£16 from the PS store) and am now stuck into Days Gone (via the PS Collection).

I've got Miles and Tsushima on disc but they're wrapped up for Christmas pressies. Now that I've got used to the convenience of the purely digital way of playing, I sort of wish I'd just bought downloads.

Totally agree with the pathless comment, it's free on apple arcade so am surprised it didn't find its way to PS+

edit - I should probably try one of my PS4 discs to make sure it actually works!

Most of those seem like they're just normal prices.

And it's loading absolutely fine today, was definitely slow to load last night. Maybe it depends on what you're playing or how long the console has been switched on for or something, I dunno.

Apparently, in Japan at least, possibly:

And obviously not to be taken seriously *OBVIOUSLY, CALM DOWN* - but this is a fun skew on the data for giggles:

Yeah big consoles have been in decline in Japan for a while now. Even PS4 didn't do that well compared the rest of the world. (Quick check of sales figures put the PS4 inline with the PS3 sales in Japan)

Apart from the current #1 in Japan that is selling at a very healthy rate...

Although the physical game attach rate of the Switch in Japan is basically non-existent, so there's a parallel with the Playstations.

Eh? I don't think this is true. Animal Crossing has sold over 6 million physical copies in Japan alone. Pokémon, Smash Bros, Splatoon and Mario Kart have each sold several million physical copies. Nintendo's first party software has been doing fantastic in Japan.
