PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

When it comes to noise, I can definitely hear the flutter of the fan when my PS5 is on but its quiet enough to not be too noticeable when gaming. At first it pissed me off as I was expecting near silence but the lack of any stock anywhere for a replacement made me live with it.

The bigger issue for me is the wifi interference coming off the DualSense. Anything with 10 feet of the pad when its turned on has its wifi speed destroyed (eg my phone). I was about to play merry hell with my ISP when I noticed that moving my DualSense away from my phone fixed my wifi speeds. The same was true of the wifi connection on the TV in the front room too - if I go near it with the DualSense turned on, Netflix will die if its trying to stream anything. The performance of the controller itself is fine.

Anyone else experienced this?

Just tested this.  No impact to my phone over wifi.  Tested by running a speed test on fast.com.

Mine's silent on start-up, unless there's a disc in the drive, in which case it spins it so loudly for about 15 seconds that it reminds me of my old PS4 pro fan noise.  Once that's done, though, it's back to near-silent.  I've certainly never heard its fans 'kick in' in any game at all.  Any noise from the console is either inaudible over the sound of the game, or inaudible when i've got my headphones on.  This is a stark contrast to the Pro where i could hear the machine even when i had my headphones on and the audio turned up loud

The ony 'disappointment' i have sound-wise right now is when using it for playing movies - the disc drive is louder than i'd like even when it's not doing a mega-fast whirl.

Lol

I mean the ps5 very often starts up with zero sound. Silence.

Nothing through earphones either. It’s an issue x900h owners have had but I’ve got a Samsung Q85R.

I have to reboot it to get sound back but often that doesn’t work so powering down and turning on again fixes it.

Also a few times it’s started up with really washed out colours. And the tv reports HDR but if you were to go into a game like demons souls it would say HDR is unavailable.

So again restarting the ps5 fixes it.

Its a bit of a mess. A mess I can get on with because the fix is so simple but it’s pretty annoying.

The starting up with it not in HDR thing seems to happen to me with my OLED too sometimes, seems to be 50/50 when I start up the PS5 from rest mode I’ll need to go into settings and switch it off and on again. Minor annoyance but still something I hope a firmware update will sort out.

Have you tried switching communication to USB and plugging it in? seeing if it still happens.

Have you long pressed the mute button on the pad? try unmuting it and muting it again.

Yeah I’m pretty sure I tried that as it does dump the sound when you switch controllers I found a while back.

it’s definitely a bug.

The HDR thing too.

Is your wifi 2.4 or 5GHz? Because if it's the latter, then the controller's bluetooth shouldn't affect it. It shouldn't affect 2.4 either really, but could.

Its 2.4GHz. Ive done a bit more testing tonight and I'm less convinced its the DualSense exclusively causing the issue but it is reproducible by turning it on. Maybe time for an upgrade to a 5GHz router.

No worries, it does look very nice though, certainly worth holding out for this one rather than the 3rd party alternatives that look rubbish in comparison.

If it makes it any easier this has a European plug on it and I have tried with my shaver plug but it doesn't work.

Does anyone know what sort of adapter would work?

Is it not a standard 2 pin cable into the power brick or is it the plug integrated into the powersupply?

Thanks mate - working like a treat!

Great, I avoided that one at the time as I thought I would have to have an EU adapter, too many wall warts already. However I watched a few video reviews and unboxings later to discover it came with a 2 pin cable to the outlet. So the plug was irrelevant I have loads of spare 2pin - uk outlet cables. Unfortunately by the time I'd done that the EU version had gone out of stock already.

The official cradle uses the connectors in the bottom as well, very slick. Most third party alternatives use a weird kind of dongle in the USB-C port to charge them upside down in a cradle. Probably a weird patent thing again.

I suspect the spec for charging ports on the bottom of the controller weren't available to 3rd parties at the time they went to manufacture so they had to opt for the USB C kludge alternative instead.

I must say having this nestled under my tv I've really grown to like the looks. I'd prefer it vertical but I don't have room other than behind the tv, and I want to see it!

Likewise.  It’s bonkers looking and weird, but it’s fun to look at. Even my wife likes it!

I like the cradle much better than the one for the DualShock 4 too, because you don’t have to place the DualSense in such a specific position for it to connect with the charging part. You just plump it on there and it charges.

Yeah the official DS4 one is a bit choosy about charging a controller that's not seated exactly right!
