Thought I'd see how the drive sounded on the PS5 for playing UHDs. A minute was enough for me to put paid to that idea! The One X is louder than I'd like - without headphones it's audible in quiet scenes - but it's nothing compared to the racket the PS5 makes, which overpowers my headphones entirely. I knew it was meant to be loud, but crikey.

 

I think I may have gotten a duff drive, though, as I get the feeling it shouldn't sound like this when installing a game:

(for reference, the UI music you can just hear is coming from speakers outputting at what I'd call a "normal, comfortable" level - i.e. the volume I play games at in the day/evening when I don't need to worry about bothering neighbours/housemate. That drive buzz is loud, is what I'm saying.

Yeah UHD movies are the same - they start loud and quieten down a bit after the film starts.

Oh! good idea, I only have the Harry Potter Boxset but will test it later.

Mate has PS5 and series x and says the PS5 drive is louder and series x same level as one x, none are any use as a disc spinner - saves me from buying the disc PS5 as was a bit gutted the series x drive is so loud :(

After a convoluted trip by train, tram, and car to and from south of Manchester to north of the city first thing this morning I'm now in the club so here are my day one impressions.

 

First up, endless thanks to @MikeF for letting his spare pre-order go for cost. Given the silly money these things are going for it is incredibly generous of him and has made me very happy indeed.

 

So, the console is a beast - ridiculously so, and every bit as big as everyone says, if not bigger. Hauling the lump across Manchester made me feel like the lad in Death Stranding. 

 

Set up was mostly straightforward, not much to it bar plug it in and enter PSN handle. Sat under the TV, it really is as ugly as I'd expected, especially on it's side and that's even with half of it under the TV - some black plates are going to be essential as soon as.

 

I'd backed up the PS4 games the night before and the couple I tried have been recognised from the USB storage so that was pretty good and pleasingly painless. Unlike the saves which, despite syncing to the cloud from the PS4 last night, then doing the same in reverse to the PS5, do not seem to be working on one of the two games I tried so I'll need to look into that.  I'm not too keen on the new UI either - it doesn't seem as intuitive as the PS4. Just powering off is a tiny bitt more of a hassle than it used to be but I'll get used to it, or they will fix it.

 

I only have Astro's at the moment (waiting on Demon's Souls to be delivered) and it is genuinely incredible. Making what is really 'just' a demo of the functionality of the new controller into a celebration of everything Playstation and then bundling that in with the new console is clever. I was a bit turned off by the constant controller feedback at first - it felt gimmicky, OTT, and not much more advanced than rumble we have seen in the past but, then, as I played a bit and it was given more of a workout it all suddenly clicked and the sheer potential of the tech became clear. When the adaptive triggers sync with sound from the controller and the visuals it can be quite something and unlike anything I have experienced previously. Rumble highlights so far are the ice skating, the spluttery jetpack engines, and the rain on the umbrella Just amazing new levels of immersion and way beyond what I expected. I'm not mad on the waggle control bits, and even less so on the touchpad rolling ball bit, but Sony/ASBO have pullled a Nintendo here in the way they have showcased tech in a game - I just hope other devs take note and offer us just a fraction of the rumble ideas offered here.  The actual game is also something Nintendo would be very pleased with - there are endless ideas thrown thick and fast and it all just feels perfect as well as looking lovely. Roll on a proper full Astro game...

 

So far, so very impressed, and that's as someone who up to a few months ago was lukewarm on the bits I'd seen of the console. A lot of that disinterest was caused by the look of the thing and, having now seen it in person, there is still no hiding from it's conspicuously white bulk and awful curved plates, nor the always on and always distracting light. It's a horrific piece of industrial design (although I recognise it might look slightly better in a vertical stand and definitely looks better without the disc slot) so it is reassuring that Sony have delivered us a console that, with this controller, will be able to offer us new experiences and if they can keep on making games with the confidence and sheer joy of Astro's then we are in for a good generation.

Mine doesn't seem to charge PS4 pads or my Gold headset (USB 2.0) from any of the USB ports when in rest mode.  Has anyone else got this?.  I cant test PS5 pad charging as it is back with Sony however when I try USB C to my phone it charges fine.

It's not easier it was always very easy, they just changed the name of it, but if you have the PS App it will pop up notifications everytime somebody downloads one of your games and it becomes ready to play.

Quick question about the controller / Haptic feedback, especially for anyone who's played Fenyx Rising.

 

One of the more common vibrations feels like a weird slow 'scratch' with one distinct tapping sound, and always kicks in when climbing a cliff by jumping for example. It's a weird sensation and doesn't really seem to represent anything on screen, so I'm wondering if it's supposed to be doing something else and my controller's just buggered.

Fenyx Rising has been flagged as having haptic issues - for some people it's not triggering at all - so likely the game at fault there rather than your controller. Have you checked whether it's displaying odd behaviour in anything else?
