PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Just got to the lake on God of War, thought this was going to be a pretty linear adventure but wow just does stuff I wasn't expecting. Got Ghosts of T and Neir to play next, starting to worry I'm moving from one amazing game to another and just going to be disappointed when I finally play a proper PS5 game

This will summarise the last few PS5 on an LG OLED related vids from HDTV -

  • From the TV Home menu, set the HDMI input to PC. This will disabled all unwanted processing, this is also apparently the only way to get full 4:4:4 chroma!
  • On the PS5, keep all settings on "Recommended"
  • In HDR Game mode, leave all the settings default, apart from -
  • Expert settings - Dynamic Tone Mapping set to HGIG (This will turn off all TV tone mapping and add a hard clip at around 800 nits)
  • Expert settings - White Balance - Warm2
  • Picture options - Black Level - Auto (only available in PC mode) You'll be outputting Full RGB range as recommended in that video, which is a little different from the usual recommendation of "Limited" but with this set up, it will do full RGB for games and Limited for movies.

In PS5 menu options - HDR Calibration

  • Set the two white levels to the point where the sun completely disappears. If it is still visible, then you will lose specular highlight detail
  • Set the Black level to absolute zero. You will get a proper 0,0,0 RGB black level.

Things to note -

The PS5 HDR Calibration tool will ONLY EVER DO ANYTHING if the game is pulling the data from the OS. Like Mile Morales. A lot of games don't do this and you have to calibrate the game in the game's menu's anyway! Lots of Sony first party games even do this! Demon's Souls has it's own calibration, as does TLOUp2.

It's best practice to always check if the game has an in-game HDR Calibration, as it will NOT be using the OS settings and you instead have to set it yourself by hand.

As HGIG lets the game do all the tone map with a hard clip ceiling set at around 800 nits you should still always use it. You should be yourself setting the white point in games to the 900-1000 nit range which is at the point the "grey boxes" disappear.

Sekiro and Saint's Row 3rd Remaster have in-game nits meters, and this all works out as expected.

Another thing worth noting, setting Dynamic Tone Mapping to OFF still does tone mapping! HGIG is the best option for everything.

With it set like this, there is basically no visible difference when running an SDR game with HDR on or off in the PS5 settings menu, as the HDR dynamic range is now set correctly. It might not be ideal having it always on for some tv's, but it looks good with the LG OLEDs

Here's Evil Boris' patreon with similar info. He recommends Limited RGB, where as Vincent recommends Auto mode and full RGB.

I like Vincent's settings the best, as with Limited and Warm 2, white looks a bit yellow, where as with Full RGB and Warm2, white looks paper white.

I tried this and setting the PS5 input to PC cause a somewhat worrying flicker - about once per second it would flash a retained frame. For a moment I thought it was the PS5 GPU failing, then I changed the input back to Games Console - and applied all the other settings and it was fine, flicker gone.

I had this! ...well, if it's the same thing. It was almost like a "junk frame" displayed so quickly you could barely see it. A weird judder.

I was seeing this basically around the time I got the TV. It was actually a weird firmware issue on the TV, that basically required me to factory reset the TV on the current firmware which completely resolved the issue (touch wood).

I still haven't bought a PS5 game yet either, yesterday I ordered Cyberpunk 2077, Wreckfest, Borderlands 3 and Red Faction Remarstered for just under £69 all brand new & sealed instead of buying COD at £65 which according to the thread is a proper bug ridden mess. Borderlands 3 is a tenner on amazon and comes with a free PS5 upgrade that uses the Dual Sense features so that'll keep curiosity at bay for a while.

My PS5 is more like a PS4 Super Pro at the moment and I couldn't be happier with it

Yeah, at first I thought it was a glitch in PS4 emulation but I noticed on the Home menu as well. To my eyes it seemed to be a frame from a few seconds ago so in the game UI you would see a short flash of the previous menu screen you were on.

Let us know what they are like as I have as steel series with dac which has never really made me happy and would be interested in this.

They ended up being delivered yesterday so I've had a decent amount of time to test them. Sound quality is definitely better than the Golds and they have a lot more bass too. The 3D Audio sounds more impressive coming from these, especially all the background city noises in Miles Morales. Felt like cheating playing Dead by Daylight with them since it's much easier to hear and pinpoint little all the little telltale survivor and killer noises.

Haven't been able to properly test the mic out with others but it sounds decent enough for voice chat from what I heard in the mic settings. Build quality is good, there's a rubber band across the top (rather than spongy material that will flake off) that adjusts to the fit of your head rather than having to click each earcup to get the right fit like before. They're much more comfortable than the Golds too since they don't press the back of my ears into my glasses.

Don't know what the battery life is like yet but I'm guessing it must better than my 7 year old Golds.

Sounds very similar! I would - if you can be arsed with redownloading apps - suggest factory resetting it on the current firmware.

I've also considered not using PC mode, and just sticking to Game mode normally.

I just about found the time to setup the TV with the settings you suggested - the thought of redownloading everything after a factory reset is a bit much especially all the logins... so many logins... Personally I can't see much difference between the Game Mode and the PC mode at the mo so I'll leave as is until it forces me to change - or a new firmware update comes out that fixes it.

I’m pretty happy with mine though it remains to be seen how good voice audio is - other players voices in overwatch seemed pretty quiet but I haven’t played it in comp yet where people are talking properly. The mic seems very sensitive and registers input very easily but I’m not sure if others can hear it.

There’s a separate rocker button for mixing game audio and chat audio that I had turned right down. Voice chat is fine!

Has anyone worked out if the create button does anything that you couldn't do via the PS4's share button?

I've barely touched it. I kind of need Facebook integration back before I'll feel the need to create anything.

It gives you access to your clips and images to edit them without suspending the current game.

If anything it does less, as the button only does the actual recording. Any sharing is done through the UI, hence the name change.
