I can hear mine above a muted TV or in the silent moments, but I have to pay attention to it to do so, if that makes sense. I'd definitely not argue that it's silent, but I'm not bothered by it unless I remember to be.

Same here, we seem to be obsessed with 'silence' when in actuality anything with a spinning fan or disc drive will never be truly silent.

There's a system software update available now, but of course nobody knows what it does apart from 'improvements'. :coffee:

This is pretty frustrating given how much of a trashfire the OS seems to be for some people. Fortunately, I haven’t had any issues so far but people who are having to rebuild their database all the time probably want a bit more info that these issues are actually being addressed.

Unfortunately my brain is quite good at remembering to be bothered about these things and telling me I’ve got a launch model which is bound to have issues. I also bought mine from GAME who are probably next to worthless with regard to customer support. Fortunately, I haven’t had any stability issues, or I’d probably be much more anxious.

I find all the complaints about the UI amusing, typically when making changes to a UI like going from PS4 - PS5 or Xbox - PS5 everyone always complains that they can't find X or why has this been moved. We used to refer to that as 'who's moved the cheese' and you see it on any major UI change across OS's everywhere, iOS, Android, Windows OSX etc. Sometimes things have been moved for good reason as part of a broader UX other-times things might be missing as the new UI has not yet fully matured. Having had to adapt to UI changes over many, many years across many platforms I guess I'm just 'thicker skinned' to UI changes than most.

However there are some changes in the PS5 UI that seem a little off kilter but generally I think it very good. It feels suitably nextgen, and whilst getting used to a tap of the PS button vs a hold as it was before is 'different' it's not necessarily wrong.

And the flip side is that one of the big complaints about the xbox is that the UI hasn't changed at all.

Which isn't really true, it's the same on both generations but it changed in a few major ways about a month or two before the new consoles launched, just people didn't notice for some reason.

I think you can fairly easily argue that it’s wrong on the basis of being poor design. And it’s poor design because there’s no good reason for it, as you mentioned, and you’ve spent 7 years teaching your 100+ million users that it’s the other way around.

The PS4 UI built on the PS3’s XMB. This doesn’t really build on either. It’s similar, but different with no real discernible benefit other than the intrinsic ones of being faster and feeling newer.

Are people maybe losing perspective a bit?

I played some Horizon Zero Dawn yesterday on it and loaded up the map, and it was silent. If I muted the TV I could not hear it from where I was sitting.

If I did that on my PS4 Pro, I'd seriously be like "this is going to explode", as the fans kicked up into turbo overdrive warp 9.

I definitely am having that muscle memory problem with the PS5 because it's simultaneously very similar and very different. I'm hoping it'll settle down, but it's weird. And if you hadn't gotten rid of your PS4 but maybe retired it to a kid's bedroom or spare room etc, it would be quite hard to switch back and forth.

It's possible yours is quieter? Rather than assuming people are making it up?

Indeed. It seems people want change but when they get they don't like it. Guessing manufacturers feel compelled to make a changes to give products a "new" or "next generation" feel. However the OS is just a mechanism to get to where you need to be. I think its just getting it to a state where there is a bunch of core functionality you need to access easily.

Part of the reason I like using the Xbox is that it hasn't changed too much. If there are changes they have tended to be tweaks to what has gone before. Bit like Windows on a PC really its a conduit to get to what you need to do - in this case play games.

Its great that things evolve but IMHO prefer to keep the core things easy to access and use.

I put a video in the PS5 BC thread playing Days Gone - Challenge mode, even with 100's of enemies , fire and explosions on screen it doesnt make a sound. 3 second restarts when you fancy another try, it's truly turned the game into a brilliant, Tony Hawk's style 'just one more go' event.

On PS4 Pro, it takes ages for the initial load, then the challenge mode, then when you're finally in the fans engage afterburner mode. Now all that is gone and it's 60fps to boot! ^_^

That's not what I'm saying, at all.

I'm saying losing perspective as the differential between a quite and a "loud" PS5, doesn't seem all that much, then remembering what the prior generation was like. Basically a proper jet engine.

This reminds me of all the talk when Ps4 launched with people saying they had noisy PS4's and lots of other saying it wasn't loud at all.  Turns out the PS4 was actually loud and now more people seem to have accepted that fact.  I'm sure the PS5 is a shit load quieter than the PS4 jet engine but I'd imagine some people have quieter ones, some people don't have decent hearing and some people just tolerate more noise too.

I think for some people it's just the difference between youtube reviewers who got it free saying its silent and the reality of hearing something in your own house for some hardware you've paid 450 quid for.   Can't see anyone regretting their purchase but it's good that not everyone is saying "nothing to worry about, move along"

I paid £450 for this thing, and I want it to work as intended, and for the fan (or whatever is causing the issue) to be fitted properly. A lot better than the noisiest console of all time doesn’t really cut it.

I think they sacked their app dev team as you can’t get it on the PS5, Series consoles and our LG telly has a message saying it’s not gonna be on it soon also.

Isn't that just the Sport and news apps? iPlayer isn't going anywhere.

I have to disagree with that, I’m still sore about all the great features I had got used to with the PS3 XMB being ditched completely. For me the PS4 interface was a massive step backwards, and although it got better it never matched the PS3.

The biggest pain was the loss of custom soundtracks integrated with games (WipeoutHD would cue your music to start along with the races, add reverb in tunnels etc) , so it could be replaced by just having Spotify playing in the background all the time. Bollocks.

None of the games I have (Astrobot, Demon's Souls, Sackboy) support this. It's all just options to launch a particular level which isn't usually what I want. Which games support loading a save game directly from the activity cards?

With Astro Bot can you save mid-level (other than via rest mode) otherwise isn’t launching a level just the same as launching your save? Granted it’s not Quick Resume but I find rest mode is adequate for that.

What I’d like to be able to do is create/pin my own cards e.g. WRC 9 has a card for the weekly challenge but not the daily so I’d like to create a shortcut for that.

Just had a System update and a Demon’s Souls update. No idea what either of them fix. Sys Update just said stability fixes.

I think they said they've increased the weight of crescent moon grass to 25.0 per piece and put all worlds into pure black tendency.

I like the phone app integration. Just bought the Deluxe WRC 9 game after all the positive comments and the duel sense trigger stuff and being half price.

Anyway, just got a notification on my watch that WRC 9 is ready to play. Cool.

I bought 4 games without realising (had 3 in my cart and it didnt specify i was buying 4 games at checkout only the one i tried to buy) and now sony wont give me a refund. Saying they can only refund a game if it has not been downloaded.

But they download automatically, it wasnt until the next day i realised i had these 3 extra games. sony customer service has always been shit but this takes the biscuit.

So, does anyone know where the supposed 180+ help videos reside in Demon’s Souls? You know the ones you need PS+ to access? Is it within the game, somewhere in the game’s page on your dash, elsewhere in the PS5 interface? All I see are the usual activity cards of the world you are currently in, and in the game the tutorial area button/action guide recap vids - like those in God of War.

They exist somewhere right? Anyone?
