PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

What would you want from Astrobot that it doesn't support? I was going to post about how great I was finding the integration there. I get a notification that someone's beaten one of my speedruns, and I load directly to the start line in seconds. I can load to the levels directly.

I do understand the Quick Resume feature on the xbox is obviously a suspended state of exactly where you were, but I'm not sure I'm losing much without that.

Rest mode still suspends the game in its state and you can turn it on and pick up where you were, that works in Astrobot. Not seen any cards with straight load into save though. Not sure I want a 'suspend' feature on all games really when its pretty fast to load an alternative title up.

It is indeed rather rubbish. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing - I’m sure the UI came in very hot.

It absolutely has to be as even Cerny pointed out in his presentation that this will be a thing of the past.

Except, I then clicked on the link and saw that they were complaining about Destiny 2, which is still a PS4 game and will not act any differently if installed on internal SSD or External which is entirely to be expected. So this is an absolutely nothing story and full-on click bait.

If it was PS5 games doing this then yeah! But it's a PS4 game so it's going to act the same as it does on PS4, as it's a PS4 game.

I can’t believe that the “copying” part of update/patch installs is still a thing :( I’ve been amazed at the speed of the loading times with the SSD and then was disappointed to have to sit through 5 minutes of copying to install a patch that took 10 seconds to download.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2020/11/21/why-does-the-ps5-still-have-the-dreaded-copying-phase/

It's totally bizarre why it takes so long? I was moving a game from the internal drive on my Series X to the expansion card and despite it being 70 odd gigs it took just over a minute. Yet the patch for MM that was copying took 5 minutes?

I'm really loving the console, but all those reviewers saying the UI felt next gen need their bumps feeling.

I find all the complaints about the UI amusing, typically when making changes to a UI like going from PS4 - PS5 or Xbox - PS5 everyone always complains that they can't find X or why has this been moved. We used to refer to that as 'who's moved the cheese' and you see it on any major UI change across OS's everywhere, iOS, Android, Windows OSX etc. Sometimes things have been moved for good reason as part of a broader UX other-times things might be missing as the new UI has not yet fully matured. Having had to adapt to UI changes over many, many years across many platforms I guess I'm just 'thicker skinned' to UI changes than most.

However there are some changes in the PS5 UI that seem a little off kilter but generally I think it very good. It feels suitably nextgen, and whilst getting used to a tap of the PS button vs a hold as it was before is 'different' it's not necessarily wrong.

Has anyone seen how to register the PS5, I was expecting it to appear on my Profile under Devices, but nothing is there

That's strange. I have just signed in to check mine and it has appeared under devices without me doing anything.

Is that really quiet? I had to turn the sound right up.

You can hear it across the room in quiet moments or if the TV is muted.

I really don’t want to get rid of my PS5 and rebuy it - because who the hell knows when that will be? My PS5 is also now on the other side of the wall, in a storage cupboard and I can’t hear, but it still bothers me. If space host finds an easy fix, like o-rings or something, I might give that a go.

There’s a new firmware update out:

-This system software update improves system performance

868MB.

Re: The OS - if you press triangle, it takes you to the top menu, and if you press circle, it takes you to the games list.

Seems odd that there aren’t more shortcuts like triggers to get to the end of menus quickly.

Having to hold PlayStation and scroll through ten icons is the only way to power off, correct?

The thing that throws me with the UI is everything you did with a long press of the PS button on the PS4, is done with a short press on PS5 and vice versa.

Exactly my issue too. I wish there was an option to switch it back as it's so hard wired I keep getting it wrong. Rest of the UI is fine though, bar the lack of folders.

Tap PS Button - bring up the 'hot bar' go right to power.

Yes, sorry, that’s what I meant. As has been mentioned, tapping it to bring up the hot bar is really quite confusing coming from the PS4. But yeah, you still have to scroll through the bar. You can also press left from the first icon in the hotbar to skip to Power, but it’s such an unintuitive setup.

I do like the UI though, I like how almost every PS4 game has new full screen art for the splash screen. No longer have to worry about themes.

The capture gallery is absent though, I seem to only be able to find it by clicking on recent captures > go to media. There isn't a generic tab in the media section though, unless I'm blind.

The trophy list needs to be more prominent rather than buried under your profile. They let you put some icons in the quick bar that are all but useless to me in comparison. I also want to be able to reorder the icons on the quick bar like you can with the tabs on the Xbox quick guide.

The cards integration with Astrobot is an absolute triumph. I used them to hint at where all the collectables were that I had missed. Truly seamless, fantastically efficient integration.

Except as others have mentioned, this is happening on Miles Morales PS5 patches.

I can hear mine above a muted TV or in the silent moments, but I have to pay attention to it to do so, if that makes sense. I'd definitely not argue that it's silent, but I'm not bothered by it unless I remember to be.
