Noticed how most of the crashes are those with external hard drives. Why not just use the consoles 800gb? surely that’s enough to keep you going. I’ve installed 23 games on mine.
With fibre also you can download most games by the time you make/eat your dinner.

Which is super if you're one of the lucky bastards with fibre.

If you're bringing a ps4 library across and if downloading a game is a "It'll be there by the time you make dinner tomorrow, maybe" job then 800gb goes very, very quickly.

Yeah I'm lucky to be on a fast connection but I have always played games differently with only 1 single player & 1 multi-player game installed so for me the 667GB storage is more than enough. I have a extra few titles installed the kids like to play but even with those I currently have 445GB free.

I don't want any issues with the PS5 so not using external storage or rest mode until Sony have fixed.

I also still have my PS4 Pro hooked up with a stack of games on the 1TB drive installed.

Got my first UHD Movie disc to test :) No Dolby Vision so I won't miss that. Curious to see how the bit rate compares tot he streaming services, I know Bluray discs always looked better than the 1080p equivalent on Netflix so I have high expectations.

In other news - NXGamer has done a full breakdown of the Updates to Blood and Truth for PS5. Seem to be pretty substantial.

I did....and absolutely nothing happened.

EDIT. Here it is. When I uploaded it the downloads and upload icon disappeared from the taskbar so I figured it hides it when there’s nothing to download or upload thus no point in showing it. Probably yet another bug.

I don't think that's a bug, I believe the upload/download option is meant to disappear if there's no activity of that kind. :)

As for nothing happening, you to have to wait for YouTube to process the upload before making it available. In my experience with uploading youtube vids on PS4, they're never available the moment an upload finishes.

Thought it was system wide there? Did I get that wrong?

VRR wouldn't do anything for a locked 30hz game/mode so it technically isn't all software. That is likely what that wording means.

A game can't support VRR unless it is running in the variable refresh range.

I’m assuming PS5s have sold out everywhere now - so if I wanted one without paying silly prices, am I likely going to have to wait until next year?

Possibly, many of us are holding out hope more stock will be available before Xmas. My nephew now wants one.

Just played some Miles Morales using headphones plugged into the DualSense. Sounded like everything was underwater (good headphones too and they sound great with music / movies).

Any reason to think a USB headset would be better?

Must be something wrong with the audio settings here. The sound via the Dualsense is excellent, in my experience and from assorted testing with and without amps and DACs. Headphones sound great plugged straight into the pad.

What were the reports of games being deleted? Spider-Man Remastered came up as asking to download and install, but had already done so. But on looking, it shows that it was asking to install the PS4 version. So clicked on the dots and you just switch to PS5 version. It doesn’t magically get deleted. Obv not ideal but seems like the usual exaggerated bed shitting.

No, it's actually deleting (or, at least, losing track off) installed games - it's not 'exaggerated bed shitting' at all. Hopefully they'll fix it asap, but it's certainly happening at the moment.

@Spacehost Just spoke to Sony after being on hold for nearly 2 hours.

They've refused to take it in for repair. Advised me to return it to the retailer for a refund. When I pushed for a repair, he basically told me they'd receive it in and just post it back out to me.

Amazing customer service

At least you got through, it just says all lines are busy when I phone.

Classic Sony.

I had to reinstall Miles Morales twice because it deleted it. Been playing Spidey 4 Remastered on it since Thursday/Friday when it happened so not bothered to try it since.

I'm now tempted to grab a few bits today and see if I can find anyway to reduce the noise myself.

The chap I spoke to just explained it was coil whine. I was like no, if I remove the fan from the casing, it's silent. His reply was "We won't take it in for repair as it's not a fault. If you don't like it, return it to your retailer". Cheers then.

I was complaining about the PS5 to a mate and he told his friend I'm thinking of selling it.

Guy is willing to offer me £750.

Not gonna lie, it's very tempting.

I'd go for that... Unless you are really going to miss it... The "profit" nearly pays for your Series X and you can pick up a whine-free PS5 later along the line. It will also have some of the launch issues patched out.

My PS5 is definitely louder than my XSX (which is as close to silent as you can get), but I wouldn’t say it was noisy. It’s the 2nd quietest modern console I know  It has a low ‘being on noise’ but I wouldn’t describe it as a whine either. Inaudible over the TV at any normal volume.

If I hadn’t got an XSX I would be cheering from the rooftops about how much quieter it is (at least currently) to the wind tunnel machine that is my PS4. It’s a night and day difference.

The drive, makes a din though. Haven’t tried a Blu-ray on it, but if is sounds like copying a disk, I’m out of the disk based movie game for life (not that I was really in, in the first place).

Is that not breaking the warranty somehow?

Interesting to see what is regarded as a fault. Technically it works so not a fault. Guessing the'd have a few to sort out if "being noisy" was a fault.

The retailer will probably tell you to contact Sony.. :D

All options available were set to headphones.

Not much else that I could do.

Fortunately you can get to the fan without removing any of the warranty stickers. Am just going to try adding something to try and combat the vibrations from the fan.

I'll let you know later but I expect that when it's copying data to HDD it's going flat out, hence the noise. However UHD movies will not require the full speed of the drive so it should be much quieter (in theory).

Looks like it bolts into the plastic chassis so not sure how much can be done? It is quite a big fan in terms of depth of the blades so guess its just shifting a lot of air. Depends what type of noise it is I guess.. vibration noise or just the air noise as its pushing it out.

Am I right in thinking the main things to avoid at the moment are rest mode and using external drives? Anything else?

So they say, but I've been doing both without issues. However, I customised my rest mode so it WILL NOT automatically install OS Updates and Game Updates. I let it charge controllers, turn on for remote play and a few other bits and pieces.

Rest mode issues seemed to be isolated to games rather than OS, Spiderman has been fixed (the main culprit from what I've read). Not had a single issue with my external drive. External drives 'issues' can be very hard to pin down as there are quite a few variables - I've heard people having issues using the front USB A port (which Sony even says yous shouldn't use for external drives) and others who have slung a spare drive in a random enclosure off Amazon (who's know what spec they bought). I'm running the Seagate external drive that was recommended by EG so far so good!

I would say yes these are the two features that seem to have the most issues.
