PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

I really like the look of the PS5, screw the haters. It doesn't really match with my interior in any way, but I'm fine with that really.

It is very unique... :) To me it looks like a cheap Chinese knock off console... Not fan of shiny very scratch-able fronts. Especially when you are plugging cables in and out all the time...

I'm very boring in that respect. PlayStation I liked the design of best was the original release PS2. Followed by PS4. Although PS4 could have done with some USB ports around the back as I hate cables etc cluttering up the front of the console.

For me a console should be fairly inconspicuous and just tuck away somewhere quietly..... The PS5 looks like a statement piece. :D

In the end as long as it plays the games you want to play and is reliable....

Digital PS5, I’m 99% convinced I don’t need a drive....

Indeed. That is what I'd go for looks better. But you are tied to buying things from the PS store... And there is no GamePass on PS5 so all new exclusive content will be at maxium RRP price (ie: £70). Which means I would reluctantly go for the disk version. Just out of pure economics. Although you could get keys from third party vendors I guess...

Of they're not making Ridge Racer 8 it doesn't matter.

Sony have dropped the ball a bit IMHO not getting a new driver out with the console... OK Dirt 5 but that is not platform exclusive.

A 4K 120fps Ridge Racer anniversary edition might have been nice. Especially as its like 25 years since it released on the original PlayStation (or there about wasn't it released in Japan with the original PS*?) and it was its signature title. Along with perhaps a Wipeout.

* Still want to use PSX after all these years! I think there was an actual PSX released at one point with a hard disk recorder integrated.

There’s generally always 15% off PSN credit with ShopTo. I’ve gone for the disk version, partly for choice and also because I still like physical things. I’d expect to be more digital this gen though, especially as I gameshare with my son.

I’d have loved a new GT at launch but that was never going to happen, killing off DriveClub was the big mistake and it’s even sadder now because it’ll probably be locked at 30fps forever. Imagine if they’d launched with a remastered 60fps version of DriveClub on PS Plus making full use of the DualSense, grrrrr

Indeed. Personally think consoles need a good arcade racer but perhaps its more of a niche market these days. Although MS seem to think there is a market (Forza Horizon series). Perhaps Sony are just happy with third parties supplying the goods now.

In time honoured tradition, I have just tried putting a PS5 disc into a PS4.

Spoiler

The PS4 can't even read the disc, far less determine that it isn't a PS4 disc. It constantly does the whirring up noise, which makes it sound comically confused. It eventually tries to eject the disc, fails, and repeats the cycle.

Wreckfest is awesome, on par with DriveClub for best racing game on PS4 imo so I’m really looking forward to trying that on PS5, hoping the load times will have improved and that they patch in DualSense support at some point. It’s the one game where crashed cars on track are as dangerous as those you’re racing against .

I used to love FH on 360 and got FH3 on PC but I don’t know if it’s got worse or I just got bored but it seems less and less based on reality. So while the graphics get more and more lifelike the driving and how you interact with the environments seems to be moving in the other direction.

Just a warning the PS5 has a 'first time startup' sequence that can't be seen again after it's done it flags it in the bios as done and won't do it again.

It's like the Big Bang of gaming, make sure your TV's on and connected to the right input so you get to experience the glory.

Got the DualSense controller today. Going to run it through with the Switch and USB-dongle later on, but so far:

  • It has an Xbox Circle button, as in: the Circle button tapers to the right alongside the surface a bit instead of being straight flat like the other AOXD buttons. Never liked that on the Xbox controllers, but not a big deal.
  • The d-pad is spongy without a more definite endpoint when pressed. You can press on as if it's still registering. This is worrying. The d-pad almost feels DC-like because of it, and lacks a rocking feel. I really hope this is down to breaking it in, otherwise I can see fighters become an absolute nightmare.
  • All of the AOXD buttons seem to have ever-so-slightly less travel than the DualShock and feel quite flimsy as a result.
  • L/R triggers/buttons feel normal.
  • Sticks are ye olde sticks, they do have an inside rail which seems to make it a tad more smooth when pushing the stick alongside the edge.

Going to fire up Dead Cells and KOF '98 on the Switch to see how it'll fare, but initial impressions of the buttons alone are quite meh.

Tiny Dead Cells run on PC instead and the d-pad remains a bit squeaky and spongy but (oh, thank god) not unresponsive at all; buttons/triggers are fine. A weirder thing was the size of the handles, they are larger and feel quite bulky compared to DualShock/Xbox. Feels odd (have to note I'm not a fan of larger controllers, the original Xbox duke gave me cramps).
