@the_debaser Really? I’ve heard it was beautiful, ultra important and seismically earth shattering  and influential to the extent that they now make Star Wars games that are a bit like it.

I’ve heard that Demon’s Souls is the Dark Souls of Souls games. Hang on...

Some places were reporting that Samsung QLEDs were having VRR issues too, though I haven't bothered to read into it yet as I've put my TV shopping on hold until the consoles are out and we get proper, testing happening with the actual devices I'll be using.

You can pretty much count TVs in 2020 that have 2.1 and support these features, and, in Europe anyway, they are made only by LG, Samsung and SONY.

I wonder if they are delaying VRR on PS5 as it doesn't work with the XH90 /X900H which is the TV Sony are advertising as PS5 ready...

In a newsletter published by the OLED Association, LG Display has confirmed that the VRR gamma shift issue on LG OLED TVs including the CX and C9 is caused by the underlying OLED panel. While the company is investigating the possibility of introducing multiple gamma curves at lower refresh rates, the fix will be hardware/ T-Con-based, and can only be applied to future OLED TVs and not existing ones.

*Wiper quietly, sadly places his OLED55BX in the bin*

Seriously though, that's very disappointing. Gsync with my monitor has been revelatory, and I finally bit the bullet on a new TV this year because the combination of 4k, OLED and VRR was so compelling, and had just reached affordable for me. Feels like I should have waited a year :/

Yeah, the TV was still a massive upgrade in every way on my last one (a nine year old, 40 inch Samsung D5520), but it stings to know I might have been better off waiting a little longer. Ah well.

(obviously when Brexit arrives and a new TV costs a year's wages/one loaf of bread I may be glad of my decision after all)

VRR can be any refresh rate can't it? Hence 'Variable'.

A display supporting a variable refresh rate usually supports a specific range of refresh rates (e.g. 30 Hertz through 144 Hertz). This is called the variable refresh rate range (VRR range). The refresh rate can continuously vary seamlessly anywhere within this range.

Is it only when doing 120Hz, though? I don't see 120 Hz really being a major thing on PS5, so it's mainly the 40-60fps range you'd be using it for, which would give you a smaller range of frametimes and therefore less variance between the charge time of each pixel.

No clue - but like @Thor I didn't particularly notice it via HDMI 2.0 Gsync (which was limited to 4k 60hz 8 bit HDR)- although gamma on PC had its own issues on the same OLED's at first anyway. I have a HDMI 2.1 gpu but not had much of a chance to play with it yet so will experiment.

That is the issue with such cutting edge tech and maximising the bandwidth on these things - always teething problems and some headache around getting insane stuff like 4k 120hz HDR with a full bit rate being in sync with the panel and all of its functionality.

Ooh! A tragedy we'll never see patches for Wipeout or Rigs (what with Sony having killed the studios), but give me an Astro Bot upgrade and the PS5 will finally be drawing with Series X for me!

Looks like there will be another review embargo lifted today, on the Kinda Funny Games video review for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Greg states another review is coming out in a few hours (this is in context of the Assassin's Creed Valhalla review releasing at 11am our time).

So maybe another game review embargo is lifting this afternoon. Doubt it will be Demon Souls as on one the latest last Easy Allies videos they stated they hadn't received their review copy yet.

So could be Bugsnax, Godfall or Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

If the timecode link doesn't work, its at 02:28, very brief mention of it.

Returnal, Ratchet & Clank and GT7 in the first half of next year feels like a good spread, if they get them done. And then Horizon (and God Of War Ragnarok was 2021 when it last got teased? But presumably less certainly) sounds like a solid first year.

That's a very decent first year and given I haven't finished God Of War, Spiderman or Last of Us 2 yet it'll be an ace year when I manage to get a hold of a PS5.  I'm just going to have to accept that a black console isn't going to happen in the first 12 months.

I take it none of the reviewers have tried UHD BR playback yet... With Netflix, Disney+ and AppleTV apps all supporting Dolby Vision it's a real shame the PS5 doesn't. I was really hoping I wouldn't need to get a dedicated player...

Yeah, I'm gutted about that too, it was the reason I went for the disc version actually, I was banking on the drive being DV capable. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for black Friday deals on standalone players.

So far then, PS5's launch (albeit some of these games are cross-gen) has an Essential rating for Astrobot and Recommendeds for Miles and Bugsnax from Eurogamer (and you have to assume, presumably, Demon's Souls will score highly.)

That's not a bad start.

On the DV thing, without being too dismissive, I would bet a grandad most people couldn't tell the difference between DV and HDR10.

Edit: Yeah, I said what I said.

I'm willing to give it a shot - got plenty of DV content on streaming services might pick up a UHDBR movie from CEX to test your theory.
