PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Who knew the next gen battle would be settled on loading times.

I am so fucking excited, I'm seeing nothing but good news now. Like, better than we could have expected. I think Sony have purposefully not gotten all showy with what they've done so as to manage expectations. It's paid off. I have no genuine concerns.

Thanks @teddymeow, I don’t have PS Plus, which is the main reason I was asking about manual transfer. I can always finish what I’ve started on the 4 Slim and start the others on 5 I guess. :)

Can you connect your PS4 to PS5 with an ethernet cable and transfer profile and saves that way ? I genuinely don't know but it's what I did with my PS4 - Pro.

Check first post. You don't need PS+. You can use USB, external drive, WiFi connection or connect them via ethernet.

I got the impression from that video that DF tried a selection of games they had to hand, and everything they tried ran fantastically well,so I assumed Driveclub would be improved too.  Does DC run at a perfect 30fps on the base PS4, or is it already at its best performance?

If a game has an unlocked framerate option then it's better on PS5.   If it's locked (like Bloodbourne) then it'll stay at that locked framerate

We spent MONTHS arguing over the crazy transfer speeds of the Sony SSD and how it was going to change games foreverrrrrrrrrrrr   Now it's not important?

All about the controller now?   :)

The BC news is great.  Having checker boarding 2k-4k on last gen means that games will likely hit 60fps more consistently than the equivalent true 4K games from Xbox One X.

Definitely important, but I think for most people it matters more for new games than BC.

I think it matters. If PS5 native titles load in sub-10 seconds from cold, and then BC titles take more or less exactly what they used to, then it's quite the poor experience for all those PS Plus Collection games. And then the Quick Resume feature on Xbox is going to be even more attractive than it already is.

What?! Where's that from?

RUMOUR CONTROL

RDR2: XSX has a half second advantage over PS5. Both are over a minute faster than last gen.

Final Fantasy XV: XSX loads 22 seconds faster than PS5. Interestingly, both are waaaay slower than a PS4 Pro on an SSD.

Destiny 2: XSX has a 15 second lead over the PS5. The PS5 is over twice as quick as PS4.

Monster Hunter World: XSX is 16 seconds faster than PS5. They have both saved approaching 2 minutes over the PS4.

Batman Arkham Knight: XSX has a 9 second lead on PS5. Can't find PS4 times.

MASSIVE DS VIDEO

I love the lengths to which Sony is going to fully reclaim this title after the Shu-debacle. :D Also the new score is giving it Bloodborne-esque vibe to it. Which is definitely not a negative.

You're comparing BC which is pointless. From cold boot Astro's Playroom loads in 5 seconds, Miles Morales in 7 seconds. Let's do the comparisons once there are next gen games to look at.

Two years from now? In the meantime the only metrics we've got are BC load times where SX is way faster.*

* for now, at least.

This waffle about loading times nitpicking down to the millisecond is insane. It's going to be temporary anyway until developers find ways of cramming better stuff in there at the expense of time once again.

For now, let's just enjoy its absence where possible.

It's tens of thousands of milliseconds. Just seems surprising.

Watch from the 9.5minute mark.

That's not really quick resume or a suspend mode. It doe show how quick it is to load between games, but he basically loads straight to a MM save game point, then goes through the Astro menu, and then back to the MM save game point.

The speed does make quick resume a bit redundant, but you can't pick up from exactly where you were (or at least that's not what he's demoing)

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-ps5-games-cant-be-moved-from-ssd

Eurogamer are reporting that you can’t archive PS5 software to an external drive. It’s either in the internal storage, or deleted. Might not be ideal for those with slower connections. Some pretty meaty re-downloads might be needed.

id say they fix that in a patch, but it doesn’t strike me as something they missed...more of a decision they’ve made for some reason.

The reality is in fact extremely close to what is a major feature and selling point of the Series X, and they didn't even bother to announce this, just let reviewers find out.

It’s only been made a major selling point because MS have fuck all original new games at launch.
