PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

A redesign won’t appear for another 3-4 years if it appears at all.

Oh I know that.

My plan was to get the Series X as my main machine. I’m tied into Gamepass, it’s slightly more powerful, so third party games should run slightly better on it, I prefer the ergonomics of the controller, I much prefer the look of it and I’ve got my two boys a Series S each for Christmas, because we play together more these days and I’m trying to wean them off Fortnite. Then I’d get the PS5 at the mid-gen refresh and have a load of exclusives to play.

But, the combination of gadget lust, the glowing reviews of the DualSense, Demon’s Souls and Teddy saying new wings will be out for Christmas has got me wondering whether I should try and get one sooner.

I’m going to have to see what stock’s like over the next couple of months, but I can see myself being frivolous and picking one up if the opportunity arises. Fuck my bank balance!

I have literally zero interest in the numbers or anything related to PC specs, and I start veering into oncoming traffic when I read about it, so it's more that MS made a big deal out of BC while Sony only commented that most games would work. The reality is in fact extremely close to what is a major feature and selling point of the Series X, and they didn't even bother to announce this, just let reviewers find out.

I’m not sure I’d call it close. Xbox has games going back to the first Xbox, tends to upscale Xbox and Xbox 360 games, doubles framerates in some games with locked framerates, and adds in auto HDR. You also know smart Delivery is always there if your game gets an update, and your saves will always work (strangely, cloud saving has been made less convenient on PS5, for some reason).

This is “your PS4 games work and have a bit more power.”

The specific patches for Ghost of Tshushima and Days Gone are exciting though. Especially as I’ve played neither. Hopefully, we’ll see a few more of those.

I’m surprised there isn’t more excitement about the controller here. From the reviews I’ve seen it’s the most next-gen thing out of both consoles. I imagine once some of us get our consoles we will see the excitement increase.

Seems to be a touch it and see. Not much to get excited about until its actually in our hands.

I’m very excited by it. It’s one of the things that make the console feel new in comparison to the new Xboxes and pushed me to get one. Apart from Astro, which is meant to a marvellous demo for it, Spiderman apparently varies the trigger resistance as you swing to make it feel better. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but am excited to try it.

Well most reviews have been very positive about it. I thought it would be mentioned here more that’s all. There is plenty to be excited about, the possibilities are vast.

The embargo on the first level of Astro and the controller impressions lifted last weekend, I think, so there’s already been a fair bit of chat about it.

@HarryBizzle In terms of current gen to next gen compatibility, it is very close. I don't care at all about BC of 360 or previous. I've no great interest in playing PS1/2/3 games, either. Almost everything from those eras that appeals has been ported or remastered.

I tried almost everything available on BC on the One X and while it's amazing work, there was nothing I was interested in playing beyond the five minute novelty. The things I never played at the time, like Halo and Crackdown, feel very much of their era, and evocative of the years when gaming held no appeal to me. Had they put the Cave games on BC, I would never have sold two One X consoles and I'd be keeping my Series X preorder, but they didn't. I'll still keep my 360 (and backup 360) for the Cave games and versions of OutRun 2 and just hope that they outlast every device in my home.

I was only interested in whether my current gen digital purchases were compatible with the next gen consoles, so the news that they're actually improved in many cases is a bonus. It also inspires confidence that this is no big deal to Sony. They seem entirely focused on the next gen and new games.

I'm interested in the implementation of 'auto HDR' but we've had that conversation before, so I'll wait and see before passing further comment.

Anybody grabbing this?

I've been on 5.1 for current gen but as Tempest doesn't support that yet, I'll probably get those cans.

Yes, I have the PS4 Platinum headset currently but the fake leather on the cans have been breaking up for a long time and leave black rubbery bits stuck to my face and on my desk etc. Can't wait to get these not only to resolve that issue but to see how they compare.

Similar thing with the Switch controls and the rubbing ice cube stuff which came to nothing. It's a very physical response and not really something you can cover in videos, reviews etc until its in the person's hands. From most of what I've seen it looks like a bit of a gimmick that I'll end up turning off just like high end rumble.

I bought the original Gold headset and got a lot of use out of it - mainly on PC, thanks to the wireless dongle. But it was great, until it basically disintegrated (I replaced the material on the earcups, too). But I picked up a v2 Gold headset last year and have been very disappointed with it. The build quality feels worse, but most of all, the cups are smaller than the original Gold and rather than going around my ears, they just sit on top of them, pushing my ears into the arms of my glasses, and I can’t wear them for any great length of time.

The Pulse looks nice but I’m waiting to see what support for Tempest with other headsets is like, as I’m prepared to spend a bit more for something that will be more comfortable.

I take your point. There are still some gems that haven’t made the jump, sadly. I played through Ico a couple of years ago and it’s a shame there’s no way to play it on PS2. 4K Red Dead Redemption 1 is also wonderful, and thanks to there being no PC port, the only way to play that is on Xbox.

Luckily, we still have two PS3 super slims which are in very good nick to play them and the Sly Collection on.

They said the same about the Wii controller and that turned out to be the worst thing to happen to gaming in 20 years.

I do like what I’ve heard about the DualSense though.

The big difference is that games had to be designed around the wiimote from the ground up to make optimal use of it and the Wii wasn’t exactly the home of third party games. With the Dual sense it’s just a case of some expanded universal features of the controller that could significantly add to the experience with a relative minimum of effort.

Funny, but I'd decided against a new console at launch because with so few games there didn't seem much point (and I have no plans to get a 4K TV for a while).  But the Digital Foundry video on Xbox BC convinced me because I'd basically be able to play remasters of some of my favourite games at launch. I have both Xbox One and Ps4 and the BC convinced me to go single format next gen and go with Xbox.  Now we see Sony is also doing it and on the whole the BC seems better on PS5.  Why on earth did they not make more of a fuss about this? BC is a game changer for me and a week before release I thought PS5 played a handful of the most popular titles, now DF are telling me I can play Driveclub at 60fps?   Glad I hadn't paid for a console before lockdown because I feel I'd have bought an Xbox and would now wish I'd gone for PS5.

I know. I wasn’t being entirely serious.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the DualSense is like.

Is that true? I’m sure I remember seeing a tweet a while back from @Rushy that it was a shame that they locked DC at 30fps and therefore wouldn’t benefit. Has the latest news on BC changed that?

Cant find a reference on DF or reset era.

I got the impression from that video that DF tried a selection of games they had to hand, and everything they tried ran fantastically well,so I assumed Driveclub would be improved too.  Does DC run at a perfect 30fps on the base PS4, or is it already at its best performance?

Where have you seen it’s better on the PS5 and DC is 60fps - I’ve not seen either stated in any vids I’ve seen esp DF!?

It’s not new info from Sony either, they said months back 99% of games work and listed the ones that don’t work - we know now there are games that have issues but Sony say ‘work’ and there are issues about whether some Ubisoft games work at all or just with issues. The interesting bit is Sony are putting some effort into patching stuff, not MS levels and the MS BC overall is much better - we seem to have a situation where Sony’s BC is less half arsed for PS4 games than we expected it to be and suddenly it’s better - madness!

I may have to give Spider-Man another go on the PS4, I did suggest that I needed a PS5 as well and maybe sooner than planned and from what I heard my other half didn’t say no.....

No if a game is limited at 30fps then it's not going to remove that and make it 60fps, if it had any variation from 30fps then it will make it a solid 30, but it can't go above that, and that's the same on Series X, unless the devs go back and patch it, sadly Driveclub will never get that option.

Shucks, aw well it was nice for a while.  I'll go back to waiting and checking out each console after launch before making a decision then.  I can't see them making a DC patch, they never patched out the "cannot connect to server" messages....

That's because "they" don't exist anymore, there's no dev team to patch it.

The news about backward compatibility has brought me out in cold sweats.  I feel like it would be an insult to the games to play them on my base PS4 at this stage, when they could be positively singing on a PS5.

You can back up saves to USB and transfer them across, right?
