PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Is it? Or are you basing that on games which are cross-gen and not specifically coded for the Series S and are likely to be fairly low-effort ports? That's a pretty short-sighted view.

I mean, it may well turn out to the be the case, but to come to that conclusion straight off the bat is bizarre. What console, ever, had top performance right out of the gate, rather than x years down the line?

It's got half the memory of the "main" consoles. Of course there will be sacrifices.

Miles Morales doesn't have 4k60 with Ray tracing does it?

What are the options again? 4k30 with Ray tracing and 4k60 no RT?

I know which one I will be going for. Ray tracing just isn't as important as 60fps for me.

Are any games ever going to be specifically coded for the Series S?

Surely for MS devs the baseline is the Series X, and then scaling that down to the Series S? For 3rd party devs I can imagine the baseline being the PS5, scaling up a little for the Series X, and scaling down again for the Series S. I honestly don't envisage a scenario where games are, as you put it, specifically coded for the Series S.

I'm not knocking it at all, as I said I think it's a great little box (by far the best looking too) and I'm sure it'll be perfect for a lot of people (especially at 1080p). It's just that I do have a 4K TV and I'm luckily in a position where I could afford an X in a few months if I wanted it (and to be honest with a PS5 coming as well I'm not in a massive rush) so I've just decided to wait and go for the full fat one instead. You are right that the current cross-gen games aren't going to be getting the best out of it, but there are always going to be compromises with a system at 35% of the power and that's fine, I've just come to the conclusion that I don't want those compromises :)

I feel bad even mentioning it in passing now, please everyone let's not turn this into a Series S/Xbox bashing zone. It's all good. Let's talk PlayStation.

Well probably not, no - I phrased that badly. What I meant was coded solely for the S & X, rather than cross-gen stuff, which is always going to hold both machines back.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure at the moment. DigitalFoundry mentioned in a video last week that Insomniac haven’t said either way so far, but 4k60 with RT sounds a little like wishful thinking for an open world launch game.

Spot on! Great post! Also, AstroBot on PS5, (just like the VR game on PS4), displays a level of quality and creativity that arguably outdoes even Nintendo.

   This is on par with "Driveclub is a Forza killer"

It'll age just as well.

Seriously? I'm sure I heard it was 60fps 4k.

If it's not I will be really disappointed.

For my money Drivceclub is still the best racing game of the generation (and that is after playing another hour of FH4 just last night). It may not have killed anything (nor would I wish it too to be honest) but once it got going after the rocky start it was a properly brilliant game to play, especially with the rllmuk league. Fond memories.

RIP Driveclub :( Taken too soon.

Not sure what they can do with Squadrons, seeing as it still needs to be flagged as PS4 to enable the PSVR mode, right?

Very simple: BC works differently on both systems. I believe on PlayStation, they run more contained in a more or less 1:1 emulation space, while in Xbox they can tap into new resources previously unavailable. This allows for all kinds of things like Auto HDR, framerate doubling and maximizing uncapped framerates.

Ah sorry - I thought you were asking about ray tracing. It does have a 4k60 mode, but DF were saying they hadn't seen anything either way as to whether that mode had any ray tracing or not (but it seems unlikely).

Raytracing at native 4k60 isn't happening anywhere in an open world game except, occasionally, on a 3080/3090 or RX6800XT or RX6900.

If it does happen, it'll be subsampled as fuck, or require some serious ML upscaling and denoising or be limited to a racing game where there's room to apply very specific shortcuts.

4k30 sure.

I wouldn't bet against the increased wow-factor at 4k/30fps though. Spiderman will look pretty special with it turned on, with all those glass buildings and puddles.

PS5 Miles Morales runs as follows:

Performance Mode - dynamic upscaled 4K visuals and 60fps, at the cost of some fancy effects including ray tracing (screen-space reflections are used instead)

Fidelity Mode - true 4K, 30fps, and ray tracing.

Seems like a good trade off. I think I'll start with Fidelity Mode, ohhh and ahh at the new shinies for an hour and then play most of the game in Performance Mode, unless ray tracing really does feel indispensable once you've seen it.

While promising a glimpse of the future, Astro's Playroom is a gloriously old-fashioned thing at heart, a characterful, character-driven platformer that has been built to showcase a particular piece of hardware. So often that's where magic in video games happens, and that's most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it's bundled on, it's something very special indeed - and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age.

I've said it before but Team ASOBI! is the jewel in SCEJ's crown.

Is Mile Morales the true next gen one or is it a cross gen game?

Unless I'm misunderstanding you (or the tech - very possible :) ) I don't think you are right on that. PS5 has the boost capability in BC mode allowing it to use the extra resources to bump up frame rates, etc... God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, etc... have already have had the devs go on record to state the games run with improved performance and I don't think these are the proper "next-gen patches", it's just BC mode beefing them up as far as I'm aware.

What a curious question. Both Spiderman (original and MM) games are cross gen but the PS5 versions are the next gen version. I have to ask though what do you consider a true next gen game?

I've said it before but I'll say it again: Astro Bot Rescue Mission 2 is going to be THE launch title and system-seller for PSVR2 when that hardware is released.
