Surely something that can be fixed with a system update?

Could the lack of 1440p be a driver issue rather than a hardware limitation and Sony could patch it into the PS5 at a later date?

It's not a deal breaker for me either way as I don't have any 1440p monitors.

:hmm:

The more important question is can it handle the heady heights of 720p as my tv in the living room is an old plasma

Can’t quite afford a shiny new 4K set at the moment.

You should get 120fps and raytracimg at 720p ;)

Does this supposed lack of 1440p mean that games won’t have, like, a prospective 60fps @ 1440p performance mode setting? I’m new to resolutions higher than 1080p, but I had anticipated 60fps @ 1440p being a real common sweet spot for games to realistically target, whereas 4K stuff would either tank / run at 30fps.

I'm just shocked that people play consoles on monitors.

I used to in the 360 days. Got a far better picture and response compared to the tv tech at the time.

I remember showing my mate Red Dead Redemption with dynamic contrast turned on. He mentioned it a couple of weeks ago because it looked amazing back in the day.

Games can still render internally at 1440p. One of the earlier Demon's Souls trailers did this. But it sounds like the PS5 will not output at that resolution and will either upscale to 4K or downscale to 1080p depending on your selected output resolution.

I did it until this year. If you have a very small flat or whatever and already have a desk setup and a pc it's not a bad solution.

2020 Sony really relishing the new bad guy persona  it's very entertaining. Any news on BC enhancements yet?

The only thing that keeps me walking down this dark road is a flashing light ahead that says ‘exclusives’ and the fading howl of a jet engine behind me.

The lack of speakers?

I cant speak for everyone but i much prefer to use a nice headset than sound through the tv.using a monitor to play any game for me is so much better.

But ive got kids and cant be blasting audio from the tv at night when i play.

It does seem odd not to support it as they point out there will be far more people hooking a PS5 into a 1440p screen than a 4k 120hz screen so to not have it is odd albeit all the peeps I know playing on a 1440p monitor have ones that take a 4k signal in as that’s what they do on PS4 pro now.

Its still not really a concern, more an oversight that will effect a small percentage of people.

I'm the weird person that actually might, my main PC monitor is 1440P.  Not a biggie though.

www.smythstoys.com/manage-preorder

Update on my order from Smyths checked it via the link above & it is invalid, spoke to chat and they have said for my email address I only have a PS5 Controller on pre-order but no console allocation. No pressure but I'm relying on Amazon now.

Thanks to @HarryBizzle for the tip.

First time I've used Smyths for anything, don't think I will bother again.

That's a shame, but at least you know. I don't expect Amazon to have any issues so fingers crossed you are OK.

Hopefully yes I managed to get in early on the Amazon pre-order it was at least 30 mins later before they sold out. Everyone went for the Digital Edition where I wanted a Physical PS5. I've got the charging station coming from Amazon & now only a PS5 controller from Smyths next Thursday to look at until the console hopefully arrives the following week.

I was hoping to take gospvg's PS5 pre-order. Back to hammering GAME all hours of the day for me. :(

Sorry, thanks for the passing on the pre-order link for me to check. Hopefully you will get lucky at Game I expect quite a few machines will be available from cancellations. The only downside is I fully expect them to be bundled so you will have to pay more.

Had a GAME bundle in my basket all day Tuesday, but it was bundle with MM for £52, an extra controller (which I am unlikely to ever use) for £60 and £10 delivery (£572).  Kinda regret not completing, but I just want the console and didn't think I could get cost back on the other bits.

I've got c.2000 monitors here. 800 pairs, assorted singles, plus spares.

Only a handful have speakers...

Presumably because those are business monitors though.

2 of my 3 here have speakers, the one that doesn't is an Eizo serious business Pro monitor.
