PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

They'll be reporting second hand rumours because they're under embargo and can't reveal anything about their first hand experience.

This seems to be based on someone taking a screengrab of a menu that shows up in someone else's Youtube video of a "review kit", whatever that means. It would tally with what Digital Foundry showed as the free space in a dev kit, an earlier image of unknown origin. Whether those units are representative of consumer units, who knows, but it would be in line with what the Xboxes have left.

On that note - are there any official SSD's that Sony have recommended - to plug into that special expansion slot under the hood?

Officially not yet... however Western Digital produced a pamphlet a few weeks ago which explicitly mentioned the SN850 NVMe working with the PS5. Given they are hardly a backwater manufacturer I assume there will be an official list fairly soon with this on.

I find this image incredibly confusing.

Shit hitting the fan over at ERA.

I'm not sure what this means? Does it basically mean PS5 will only be 1080p or 4k?

Dunno I but I just moved my 1080p TV out of my room and replaced it with a massive 4k TV so no genuine concerns here.

Yes, it means the majority of 1440p monitors will have to scale a 1080p output from the PS5 to 1440p. This doesn’t look very good.

I’m not sure how upset you can really be about it. If you have a PS4, that doesn’t support 1440p either, so why would you expect the PS5 to if Sony haven’t mentioned it? I certainly wouldn’t be buying one assuming it does.

No I think it means that monitors who have a native (and max) resolution of 1440p are not supported, whether that means it will display at 1080p or downsampled 4k to 1440p depends on the monitor, they're saying the PS5 won't do the downsampling itself. Basically it's only a concern if it is true and you intend to use a 1440p monitor with your PS5, which I doubt you are.

It does seem odd not to support it as they point out there will be far more people hooking a PS5 into a 1440p screen than a 4k 120hz screen so to not have it is odd albeit all the peeps I know playing on a 1440p monitor have ones that take a 4k signal in as that’s what they do on PS4 pro now.

Its still not really a concern, more an oversight that will effect a small percentage of people.

Could the lack of 1440p be a driver issue rather than a hardware limitation and Sony could patch it into the PS5 at a later date?

It's not a deal breaker for me either way as I don't have any 1440p monitors.

You’d presumably have to test the resolution, so it’s more work to support a resolution that only a small minority of players will be using.

Sony aren’t all that interested in 120Hz anyway, which is the main use case for a 1440p monitor. And there will loads of 1440p monitors that do support 120Hz, but not over HDMI.

it feels like “genuine concerns” from the PC gamer crowd.

We're at the point where there's no other PS5 news to talk about so today's hot topic to bitch about is the lack of 1440p support.

Tomorrow it'll be that the power lead is too short or something.

I don't even have one on pre-order but I wish I had made the effort. Hopefully there'll be stock available for before Christmas.

Good luck and godspeed to the DPD drivers, hope everyone in here with one on order gets it on launch day.
