Remember all the lames getting their melons twisted over the interpretation of what “up to” means?

I for one am furious too as was holding out playing this on my PSpoor for ages but then cracked last week. So wasted about 20 hours already on an inferior version. It’s a banger of a game once it gets going though. Peak Sony 3rdpersonathon.

Not native 4k! Not 60fps locked! Doesn't bode well for next-gen titles!

Gears of War 5 is the premium launch game for Xbox Series X and it's Dynamic 4K @ 60fps, plus these games aren't designed to take advantage of the new CPU or rendering pipelines etc, it's actually very promising that it's hitting 60fps @ dynamic 4k

Shush, now. You're making my marketing spiel look ill-advised.

Maybe it’s because it’s a previous gen game that they’ve quickly adapted for the new consoles. I can imagine going forward that games developed from the ground up will run better.

PlateStation's new identity is live and they have been forced to completely stop the production of whole plates and are moving to skins/wraps instead (including the middle portion)...

Sounds like Sony's enforcers were sent round...

I don’t know why they didn’t just ask for a cut of the profits though. I presume they’ll be doing that in the future. Surely they’d parties will be able to sell licensed copies.

Yeah, true. They do usually let third parties create accessories though, don’t they?

It got me thinking actually. Could new plates be different shapes? I think I could live with some matte black ones that are the same size as the main unit and don’t have to weird melted bits on.

Third parties paying a licensing fee, and a bit later on in the console lifecycle once you’ve recouped some of those initial costs.

Conspiracy Theory: the big white faceplates of doom are clearly just there to encourage sales of additional pieces of plastic with high profit margins.

Re. plategate, they were going to be shipping at launch but they simply had no way to do a "clean room" copy of a product that isn't actually shipping. Someone must've given them access to the specifications, or even the actual tooling (moulds) Sony had paid for to make the original face plates. I think there's a manufacturing partner somewhere who is in even deeper trouble.

(Remember when the first PS5 face plate images leaked and they were in some random back room?)

Thing is though what's copyrighted on a piece of plastic shaped in a certain way. Unless these companies are dumb enough to try slapping Sony or PlayStation log on the plates.   You could probably print your own on a 3d printer (probably need to work a fair bit on it to make it decent)

Yeah. But native 4K is a bit of a waste of resources anyway. DLSS and similar techniques are the way to go.

With a design patent it’s literally the shape of the thing that is protected.

Just differ on the edge by a couple of degrees of something.  Enough to be obviously different.  You could probably make an attempt  to make it look nicer. Even have a slightly smaller overhang and people buy it on the basis it makes their PS5 "smaller"
