There’s a lot of videos of broken Lego gears under motors, slipping gears, unexpected resistance. Those parts have far less deliberate resistance than this will have to put up with.

 

I don't think you can really use a child's construction toy, with inefficiently-shaped gears that purposefully skip and cam out when over-torqued so they don't store energy and snap, as a guide to how reliable a plastic gear-chain can be. I don't doubt that some dumbasses are going to actually break their Dual Sense pads trying to force the pad to do something it doesn't want to do but I think they're as likely to snap the plastic housing doing that, as the gears themselves.

Plenty of RC cars and airsoft guns from 30 years ago with all plastic gearboxes are still going strong.  I wouldn't waste your time giving it a second thought.  Christ.

Exactly. My old RC cars had teflon gearing for spur and inside the diff and withstood significantly more torque/resistance than an angry teenager's finger and worked flawlessly (and that was about 15 years ago). Zero concern.

Game sent out emails/social media posts advising anyone that have pre-ordered (PS5 and XBox) instore for the console they need to come into the store to pay by end of the day Wednesday and then there will be a click and collect service to pick it up on launch day.

Just went there this morning, huge queue when I got to the entrance they advised they are only taking payment for XBox as there is some issue with Sony and until its sorted they are not allowed to take payments. Said the store has all their allocated Xbox's in the actual stores ready but not the PS5's

They have no idea and its still Wednesday for latest payment. Asked if people can't make it to the store by then once its advise what will happen, just said the pre-orders will just sit there and wait til the shops re-open normally for collection.

Just said they will call everyone once they know. Also they've bene told not to update their individual twitter account for the shop, its for the head office to update them, which seemed a tad unusual

Someone posted the same on Reddit but they said the Game store said Sony are considering bringing the launch forward in the UK, France and Germany.

Surely it will be a logistical nightmare to do that with all the planning needed plus people having to get there to pick them up.

I suppose the stock will be sat in warehouses by now, can't imagine it's not in the country yet, maybe they will just tell retailers to release the consoles as and when they get their allocation to allow them to be shipped earlier or picked up earlier to ease the rush on the day? i don't know, I wish you luck mate, I've got mine ordered for home delivery so it shouldn't make a difference to me unless they're not in the country and Sony have problems getting them here but it's a hammer blow if it does get delayed.

Ah at least they can do a click & collect - from 8am too which is good news. Now my order was paid for on a CC on Games website, I opted for pickup in store to avoid the pensive delivery man wait. Not got an email yet so I guess I'll wait and see how it shakes down over the next few hours.

And in the US the PS5 is released 7 days earlier so play will be hampered for them during that time which will no doubt put a dampener on the launch over there.

Guy at work has said for ages he’s going to pick an Xbox up on day one and didn’t need to pre order. I had a laugh asking if he’s looking forward to going down game and picking up his console now.

To that point, and I mean no offence here @gospvg, but is there any chance we could change the tagline of this thread to something other than Sony's official marketing spiel? There must be some clever witty line we can collectively dream up, failing that just removing it would be an improvement. So it looks like Sony are supporting PSVR in BC mode for PS4 games but no new PSVR support on PS5 games. Seems like a bold experiment by Sony which they are now leaving behind. Shame as  VR is one area that would have benefitted all the extra power given by the PS5 CPU/GPU. Guess VR just isn't mainstream enough yet for Sony to invest further. At least they were bold enough to give it a try though.

This seems like a very strange decision. Why stop developers from making PSVR games on PS5 if they want to?

They won't be stopping anyone - it's just they'll run as PS4 games. So it's BC only. Which is still quite baffling, but then I guess a PS5-only PSVR title would sell like 3 copies.

 

What's the PS5 camera even for? It doesn't work with the VR - are there that many people filming themselves playing?

Yeah must be for all the streamers, I expect the PS5 has new sharing features to work better with Twitch etc

This seems like a semantic distinction. They're not able to make a version optimised to take full advantage of the PS5.

Yeah I hope the PS5 (and its camera) allow for more customisation in stream layouts, the PS4 options were pretty bare-bones. Hopefully the speed of the SSDs and CPU mean footage can be recorded in native res at 60fps; PS4 was 30fps which was kind of annoying. If it also recorded camera footage alongside for you to edit in as and when you like that'd also be pretty nice.

I was hoping that the surprise last min announcement from Sony was that the Astrobot demo would also run in VR on the PS4 headset so it’s a shame. I wonder if it will get any boost from the PS5 like pro games do and as PS4 games are meant to on PS5?
