Have Sony patented this controller up the wazoo?

Can the competition duplicate it in any way?

We’re just discussing this in the Xbox thread. You can bet MS are working on one right now, after the praise it’s getting.

The Xbox controllers already have haptic triggers don't they?

They just have rumble in the triggers. The triggers on the PS5 controller are completely different, they can exert resistance for example.

The Xbox controller only just got a Share button and they don't seem to be interested in adding a gyroscope. I wouldn't bet on a quick turnaround for fancy triggers.

I’m sure the PS5 pad is great, but let’s not forget how amazing the Wii was initially. The potential seemed endless and Microsoft invested heavily in Kinect, which never really went anywhere.

I’d imagine they’ll be watching very closely but waiting to see if Dualsense is actually a big change or a gimmick that people quickly tire of.

I bet it’s great in games like Astro, where it’s very playful and about the feel of the platforming. I’m not sure how much I want to feel every little bit of a FIFA match or have haptics as I kill someone horribly in TLOU.

Has it been confirmed yet that WRC 5 for PS5 is out at launch. Everywhere I look the date says 31st December

Yeah, its 100% confirmed for launch. 4K/60fps. 120fps mode. Full support for the haptics and resistant triggers of the DualSense. They’re also releasing numerous free updates for it, which is amazing considering the amount of content already included. 6 new tracks have recently been added for Finland, with more free tracks to come and a brand new co-operative Co-Driver mode. Its the best Rally game ever made imo.

Nope.

Thanks, I hope not, I had loads of holiday that I was told I could carry over and then my employers changed their minds, so I've got 7 working days off starting on launch day, will be gutted if I have a week and a half off and no new toy.

As I mentioned in the Xbox thread.

At the moment it is a toy that has  impressed those who’ve tried it in one game. So many other things have come along and not revolutionised things.

I wouldn’t expect MS to be panicking in the X-Lab yet.

Maybe, yeah. I presume they’ll have known about it for a lot longer than any of us though, so they probably already looked into it.

I for one can't stand rumble or gyroscope gimmicks so I doubt I'd like this haptic stuff either. I realise I'm the exception but it's not important to me, in fact it really annoys me in BOTW when I'm trying to shoot an arrow and suddenly the camera starts going crazy.

Though on the flip side, enough early developers seem to be saying they’ve implemented it in their games so hopefully it’s pretty easy to do.

What will be interesting though is how easy it is to implement well and for it not to be overused. Astro Bot would have been a huge demo focus for it so it will be brilliant. It will be interesting to compare the likes of watch dogs or Valhalla side by side and see what it truly adds.

Watch Dogs fully uses the DualSense, Assassin’s Creed doesn’t. Assassin’s Creed just sounds like a pretty shit lazy port at the moment from what’s been announced.

At the very least, the many First Party games will fully take advantage of the DualSense, which as well as the haptics and resistant triggers also has the gyro controls, a decent speaker, noise cancelling mic and touch pad, which all provide extra gameplay possibilities.

I was playing WRC9 the other night and was thinking how much better the game would play, and how much more you would be immersed and connected to what’s happening onscreen, if you could really feel the different road surfaces/conditions and you could really feel the car reacting to them - for example the car struggling for grip on gravel or feel the loss of traction driving on mud. Or how when the car is fucked you could actually feel it’s fucked, not just rely on visual/audio cues or the old “car driving to one side” broken steering stuff you get with most games. Next thing I know, that’s exactly what the DualSense is being touted as providing! :)

If it really does manage to do stuff like that and give that extra connection and feel to the game then, it will be genuinely revolutionary and a major advantage for the PS5 until it’s competitors catch up.

Indeed. It’s very much if it manages it like every other innovation . It would be great if it sets a new effective standard for the industry.

I still think that the value of Xbox trumps pretty much any tech innovation in making gaming affordable, especially in the current climate. It will be interesting to see how the core gaming market (not the hardcore) take to the benefit of haptics and if it tempts then to jump ship. For the Destiny and COD players I can’t see it being enough of a draw. In fact I can see it being an annoyance!

Sure they do, they just make them with cheap parts, call them "Elite", and overcharge the shit out of the mugs who buy them. :coffee:

Until it breaks, sure. :)

I luckily have a V1 Elite still going strong, no issues at all. I don't know why there is so many quality issues with them. I really would not say they have used cheap parts but certainly seem to have a wide range of issues.

I'll say one thing though if Sony made a Dual Sense "Elite" i'd be all fucking over it. I play mostly FPS games and back buttons are essential once you have used them.

Had a Scuf controller on the PS4 and it was unreliable and the paddles broke often and the sticks wore out so quickly, talk about cheap parts. If you compare the quality of the Elite pads to a Scuf it's night and day.

I've emailed Smyth's regarding what happens if Boris announces a lockdown later today.

There are more important things going on in the world but, damn, a new shiny toy to play with is a bright spot in an otherwise shitty year of shit.

I didn’t see any other comments saying so, but click and collect services will be allowed - so that’ll include PS5 and Xbox preorders.

I don’t think those comparisons are really appropriate as both the Wiimote and Kinect sacrificed traditional buttons and pads for something new.

This seems more like an evolution of something already there that could add immersion quite subtly if used well and could just become standard. Like analogue triggers or original rumble.

They are shut for a month as of Thursday.

Click and collect services can stay open under the new regulations, so Game could go down that route if they chose to staff it (although surely they should just move all the stock back to the warehouse and then offer delivery to everyone?).

Either way I hope anyone who has ordered in stores gets some sort of option so they can enjoy them, especially with new rounds of furloughing, etc.. coming up.
