Spot the person who hasn’t used a PC since 1995.

PC's are much improved since the 90's but they can still be incredibly frustrating. I recently had a three day Kafkaesque nightmare trying to install Flight Simulator followed by a painful Vive Cosmos install that required several reboots before it would recognise my computers USB ports amongst other issues.

So far the only actual PS5 game delay is Deathloop.

So far we do not know any game release dates until Sony decides to share some more info, I expect a few more will get delayed. All we have at the moment is "Launch Window" which could mean anything from mid-November to April next year.

I would assume that all AAA games have been hit by the Pandemic in some way, Publishers not willing to delay until the last minute for fear of impacting shareholders etc. Even cut and paste games like Valhalla have to be impacted and possibly delayed.

I have a load of new bits arriving today: I’m not particularly confident about moving MS Store based games between windows installs, don’t really want to download them all again, and don’t want to change motherboard and processor while leaving the same windows install in place.

this, admittedly, is something I don’t have to worry about with consoles.

This will be a more interesting conversation when, say, £600 builds you a PC with one of these GPUs, an SSD and fast RAM, in a box smaller than a 1990s Compaq. (Hey, at least Sony and MS made that last part easier this time.) It will happen, and it'll be interesting to see how AMD deals with that, and whether the console manufacturers come knocking at nVidia's door for their mid-generation refresh. But suggesting that being able to spend 2.5 times as much money on a PC with a GPU that's three times as fast is going to make a significant difference to this console launch (except to people who already own gaming PCs) is a bit premature.

Let's be realistic, neither of them are going to Nvidia. Sony have spoken about how they basically doubled the GPU on the PS4  Pro instead of something more elaborate so they wouldn't break compatibility with the existing PS4 and the PS5s chip looks like it's been designed with the same thing in mind.

Maybe Microsoft could switch to Intel at some point as they don't seem to give devs the same low level access to the processor as Sony allows so in theory it'd be easier for them to change. Considering that Intel's new graphics stuff is still largely unknown it's hard to see that happening anytime soon though.

Nvidia are likely to acquire ARM from softbank, so if anyone wants to go NV for a console will likely have an ARM based SoC.

So big dual blower wind tunnel?

presumably the second fan is covering stuff mounted on the back of the board.

The 825 usable space is interesting: some folk will have to go back and work out how that’s achieved with commonly sized chips and a 12 channel controller.

Do we know what the Internal/external PSU situation is with both consoles? We know the PS4 is a lottery when it comes to getting a noisy one. With the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, I've found that although the consoles are generally quiet the power bricks could be noisy buggers.

I’m curious to what extent this render is actually what the console looks like inside, and to what extent it’s just a reconstruction they’ve done based on the info in the captions. The CPU and GPU are actually on the same component of course, and it’s not clear what the fan on the other side would be blowing over (a second heat sink on the back of the SoC? the RAM?) and that seems to be a 2.5-inch SATA HDD bay on the bottom left (although maybe it’ll take an internal drive for PS4 games).

Either end of the console rather than either side?

At any rate, the tear down event can’t be far off.

Edit - It’s from the next “How It Works” magazine which is presumably reaching subscribers.

Seems to be a big square cut out of the bottom rear of the board. Maybe there?

Or the black brick at the very bottom of the case. It looks small, but that’s because the console is very large. It is probably about the size of the internal PS3 PSU which would be about right for the console wattage.

I'd love to see one of those part estimates, like they do for the iPhone and stuff, like the screen costs $100/unit, etc and see what that SSD is adding to the cost. If you try to buy one off the shelf, it's like £350+.

Um.... no it isn't?

A Sabrent Rocket 1TB (with read speeds of 5GB/s) is £169.99 on Amazon.

They have also just announced the Rocket 4 Plus at 7GB/s read speed (which is significantly faster than the PS5 SSD), although pricing is not yet available. I'd imagine based on past models it'll launch for about £200 and get discounted relatively quickly.

My mistake, you’re correct. I’m going off when I googled what it would cost to upgrade to a 2TB shortly after Cerny’s GDC talk. I just had a quick look at Scan and it seems 2TB is still >£300.
