Why would Sony add that to the PS1 though?

The irony is, with the number of Atari flashback type compilations we pretty much got it :D

as much as I love retro games I feel they are best experienced on the hardware they were made for, and that includes the monitors or TVs of the time.

You're right but the thing is, that's a lot of work for most people and keeping hardware working is no easy game these days and it's fair that people who just "Want to play Sonic again" for instance have a way to do it without having to babysit 30 year old consoles.

I'm invested here because I literally recorded a video script on this kind of thing last night :)

For the vast majority of these sorts of games, popular oldies, the best bet for 95% of people will be to buy the remaster.

It’s funny how the ps1 is 25 years old and when it was released no one cared too much about Atari 2600 backwards compatibility....

I think we might have reached the peak of ridiculously stupid analogies/comparisons.

Not that it helps you in the UK, but it cost me 50 euros to pre-order both PS5 and XsX late last year at my local Dutch gameshop. That is of course getting subtracted from whatever the price ends up being.

Interesting. Do they know their stock allocation? If not, how do they know how many preorders they can fulfil?

a better analogy would be requiring a manual choke in a brand new car.

Or a sail on your brand new motorboat.

how about a rotary dial on your mobile phone.

All technically useful, but who cares really?  A vocal minority who probably won’t even use it themselves.  These things should be things on their own. Tacking on old featuresets to products that the vast majority of people won’t care about doesn’t make sense to me.

id rather see those companies re-release old hardware than do this.

anyway, I was only in to see about dates!

toodlepip for now!

We can't neg, so I thought I should flag that this is a classic and perfect example of a drive-by shitpost.

No they are all similarly stupid

but keep trying next time you come in here looking for dates

It’s like expecting your printer to use toner from like 20 years ago, except the toner is interactive and doesn’t expire, but it’s hard to get a hold of and the manufacturer doesn’t want to make any more and would prefer to sell you HD remastered toner with better controls.

They don't. Doing this puts your name on the list. I'm in second place for both consoles (there's someone in this town crazier than me even - I put my name on the list in the last week of December 2019!) so if they get at least two in, I'm set. Suppose you're 20th on the list and they only get 19 consoles in on day 1, you'll have to wait until the next shipment. The 50 euros gets subtracted from whatever the price ends up being. It's pretty much how it's always been here, although the down payment used to be a lot less. In the game shops in Amsterdam in the 90s there was no down payment even, you just pre-ordered whenever. First ordered, first served.

Seeing the discussion here about contracts and such, it seems like people are way less relaxed about pre-ordering consoles in the UK? There needs to be a final price and everything needs to be formal and official. Which seems weird to me since I'm used to what I described above.

Am I genuinely such an unusual minority in enjoying going back to old games in my collection from time to time?

I've recently thoroughly enjoyed going back to the original Resi trilogy + Code Veronica on my PS3, and I've also been playing my PS2 copy of FFXII. I'm currently thoroughly enjoying a play-through of Batman: Arkham Origins via PSNow.

I’m with Droo, couldn’t care one iota about bc and I’m guessing Sony’s market research reflects enough of us feel similarly.

I'm sorry but can you present that in the form of a shit analogy. It seems that is how to get the point across now :D

I like playing classic games and if the PS5 was both a next generation console, and a convenient way to play Hogs of War and Extermination disks bought from the local retro store crisply upscaled on to my HDTV, that’d be amazing. But I can see why that probably won’t happen, in the same way that my Switch sadly doesn’t let me play the GBA Castlevanias and Metroids with hitherto unknown clarity, or get in to the WiiU back catalogue.

I’d no issue aligning the analogy how it was likely intended. Certainly a lot of intensity about the issue.

a man can dream but imagine full PS1/2/3 bc with Trophy support included, even for the PS1/2 games.

See I don't feel the need for retro trophy support at all. It wasn't part of the original experience.

The technology behind it is super interesting through. From what I understand, they're able to analyse the memory footprint of the game to determine when certain patterns occur, and based on that are able to determine that the game logic is in a state that meets the requirements for a trophy. Really nice bit of retrofitting.

Netflix and everything else on it is so unbelievably slow that I can’t imagine using it as a media hub any more.

It’s being used on a telly that no longer supports the Netflix app, something that seems common with quite a few apps. Not looking forward to the day the decide not to support PS3 anymore and I’m stuck with Cash in the Attic and Emmerdale on Terrestrial.

But yeah, it’s fucking slow and the Store is even slower.

They should just make the discs a bit smaller, then nobody will expect BC with ancient discs because the drive is the wrong size.

Also, when most consoles are sold at a loss and they make it back on games, why would they want to give people access to thousands of games they’re already comfortable with that can’t make Sony any money?

I also constantly mention to people that the PS3 played PS1 discs and people are constantly shocked. When these features are included they’re probably only used by a tiny fraction of customers, so why spend thousands in RND for something that could lose you money?

Fair enough - if I preordered a console and that preorder was accepted, my expectation would be that it’s fulfilled and I’d be getting a new console on day one.

I suppose that depends if you are preordering in general or specifically for day 1.
