Fuck what it looks like, they’ve presented actual games running on actual hardware which are actually likely to come out, some of them, pretty soon. Pricing aside, which is an irritation, although excusable given the current climate, I’m not sure what else you could realistically expect.

Something, from either of them, that makes me want one.

You might not be arsed about how it looks and that’s fair enough, but I do. It really does offend me, plus I’d have to have it out on show. Mocking me constantly.

But, Demon’s Souls could be good, if they’ve added a load of QoL features from their more recent games and The Medium looks decent. Will we get either as a launch title though? They don’t seem to want to tell us.

I know Covid is partially a factor, but haven’t consumer electronics marketing cycles massively shortened anyway in the seven years since the PS4 and XBONE came out?

The Switch was around two months from price reveal to launch. Apple product hype cycles are even shorter than that. Attention spans are shorter now so companies have adjusted in kind.

There's nothing either Sony or Microsoft can safely do about it but the lack of hands on impressions has probably dampened my hype levels for both consoles. It's dumb but one of the things that really got me excited for the PS4 was listening to Giantbombs coverage of E3 that year and hearing near universal praise for how the Dualshock 4 felt compared to the 3. Some of the features they are talking about for the Dual Sense sound great but I'm naturally sceptical of promotional videos.

Has the cycle been shortened? MS confirmed the next-gen was in the works back in 2018 while this thread was started in April 2019 when Sony followed suit. It feels like the cycle has been stretched out a lot more but a lot of information has been held back.

And yet again, I've bought one from one from Shopto with my order number sitting in my inbox.

I figured I'd sit it out, but the minute I leave it too late, DS is going to be announced as a launch title, isn't it?

How much?

Edit: I just had a look. 1p to preorder. After my earlier moans, I’m wavering now!

Well yeah but I think if we’re comparing the two, which I was, then at least Sony appear to have a clearer idea of where they’re headed with the games ready to go. I think Demon’s Souls absolutely will be fucking amazing, because it already is on PS3, and judging from those new visuals it won’t disappoint.

Not that it helps you in the UK, but it cost me 50 euros to pre-order both PS5 and XsX late last year at my local Dutch gameshop. That is of course getting subtracted from whatever the price ends up being.

I'm only keeping my One X at this point because I hope I'll get a better trade-in value than if I just flogged it now on eBay. Also, convenience. I can't be arsed with eBay. Am I wrong about that? Not eBay, the trade-in thing.

September 9th is probably the date of the next event. It's PlayStation's anniversary and

the day CoD's multiplayer will be revealed.

Your spoiler is even less interesting to me than if they were to reveal Watching Paint Dry Simulator VR, but that's a personal thing - other than that, SURELY with the Anniversary thing they'll unveil the date and price? Hopefully a proper DeS Remaster reveal with gameplay too.

It's not interesting to me either, but given that they'll probably have some exclusivity it might be more evidence for that date.

The other things you mention all sound likely.

True enough. I can’t believe MS haven’t made it a priority to have a decent launch lineup after all the grief they’ve had about having no games this gen. It’s baffling.

I’ve never played Demon’s, so I’m definitely looking forward to it, but a remake of a PS3 game isn’t really showing off what the console is capable of, is it?

It's unbelievable how badly they fucked that up. After investing so much into winning back goodwill, building BC and Game Pass, spending huge amounts of money on buying studios, making sure they have the most powerful console - they didn't bother making sure they would have a decent launch lineup. Even if Halo  didn't get delayed, it's pretty sparse to rely on that one title. And now that it got delayed, they have nothing?? How does that happen. There's not even anything coming right after launch that you can point to and say that would have been launch if covid didn't happen, like Ratchet on PS5.

It’s almost like Xbox Game Studios continue to be a completely inept games publisher.

Those screenshots of it looked very pretty and it's Demon's Souls. If you've not played it, you're in for a real treat.

Giving no release date, no price, no launch line up and expecting people to pay £400ish for one of two fairly average PCs in awful cases is the least exciting console generation imaginable. The lack of hands on experience due to covid is a bit crap, but they’re both just being chickens about announcements because they know that in the last two generations early feedback, (the PS3 being expensive and complicated, then a few years later the Xbox One being a posh VCR not a console) made a big impression, but even the losers in those launch battles look brave and exciting compared to this “battle”. I’m retrospect the launch PS3 was pretty great and the machine ended up selling really well, the Xbox One features really wouldn’t have distracted from it being a console even if they hadn’t been effectively binned. Both were interesting, they were trying to do good stuff.

Honestly, the new graphics cards coming soon are more interesting than either console. And that shouldn’t ever be true.

It's remade from the ground up and supports all the whizzbang of the PS5, like 4K, raytracing, a performance mode, the DualSense, 3D audio and the SSD, so it's probably just as much a technical treat as other games. Bluepoint's SotC remake was very pretty. I expect lots of QoL improvements as well.

as a publisher they’re fine. It’s just that they’re mostly publishing smaller indie titles on games pass, and not blockbusters costing multiple tens of millions of pounds, and some of their dev studios remain multiplatform due to previous contracts or announcements.

.gif stolen from elsewhere but I hope the uploading of private videos to various PlayStation territory YouTube channels (France have 4, Latin America just the 1 so far) means that Ryan, Hulst and Cerny are about to do this with some juicy info:

Microsoft should make a deal with Konami to advertise the XsX launch without games. Have Solid Snake hold the console while saying "it's just a box" (available in stores now)

I'm surprised neither of the platform owners have offered Konami a bag sack of money for the rights to their gaming catalogue, fuck knows they are doing shit all with it.

Especially Microsoft seems to be interested in making a good goodwill impression and/or tempting people over to try game pass. An exclusive classic Konami game free with game pass on day one would be quite something. Fuck, imagine if they had something like a new and exclusive Silent Hill at launch.
