PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Oh absolutely, I don’t think this generation has been very interesting and the continued chasing of higher fidelity versions of the exact same games isn’t something I’m ever going to be interested in. It’s just confirmation for me that not only can the new consoles probably not facilitate any interesting new gameplay, but that the people in charge aren’t even interested in trying to do that anymore. I’ll stick with PC and occasional Nintendo games and hold off on the new consoles until something I like enough to want to replay it with better graphics comes out.

Purely on the rise of Indie games, I'd say I've discovered and played many, many more titles over the last few years than I had done before. I do love my AAA games for sure, but the real meat and potatoes of my gaming time tends to be the output of the smaller dev teams. What some of them do with graphics and gameplay are just wonderful.

If it were genuine ray tracing then surely they'd have made a much bigger deal about it, rather than constantly going on about the SSD.

The biggest talking point of the next gen so far is data transfer speeds FFS. Mind you, it's still a more interesting subject than Godfall.

Every time I see one of these preview videos or events that are supposed to hype things up I feel less inclined to preorder. I really hope Sony have something major up their sleeve but I'm fairly certain they don't.

The developer preview of Godfall shows promise IMO.

It doesn't do much for me I'm afraid. I can see it's doing a whole lot of technical jiggery, but aesthetically it's astonishingly ugly.

Is this what they've been showing off so far? If so I'd happily disagree.

Back to R&C and ray tracing, I don't think even Clank is ray traced in that video. In the cut scenes where there's a close up, he's only ever reflecting the same environment map and in game he's tiny but doesn't seem to be reflecting the world around him.

I'm not that arsed about ray tracing as it is an expensive effect, but I wish they hadn't talked about it in the early days like it was going to make a massive difference. Or maybe Sony didn't, is this possibly just one big conclusion the media and gamers have jumped to?

Absolutely. It’s the triple A industry I’m bored of. Even pretty looking big budget games take most of their new ideas from PC indie games, so as someone who mostly likes new experiences, the consoles just don’t do it for me.

These are grim times, mate. Lighten up a little. :)

I guess I can look at it from the other perspective, I probably can’t afford the new consoles so it’s actually great that there’s no games I want to play on them

I'll certainly now be hanging fire on the new consoles for the forseeable...bloody house-moving lark is making my wallet cry out in discomfort :p

Definitely. I do think it's a much better gen for AAA than last gen as well though. Back then so many devs were chasing CoD and Gears and Japanese games were struggling. This gen has a much bigger focus on player agency and mechanics and they run better too. Just compare Hitman Absolution to Hitman and Hitman 2, Bioshock to Prey, Sons of Liberty to The Phantom Pain and most shooters to DOOM (Eternal) and Titanfall 2. A company like Capcom is back to its former glory after all that outsourcing to western devs dilluted their franchises and From Software is only getting better. VR felt genuinely fresh as well and there is way more diversity than in the previous gen. AAA these days is not just RDR2 or The Last of Us 2, but also Death Stranding, Flight Simulator and Dreams.

Gaming is in good shape. Shame the same can't be said about the rest of the world.

From what I know about Ray tracing is that it makes floor textures nice and shiney, that's about it. Slower paced games like Godfall will benefit from Ray tracing because of the slower pacing of the game/combat.

I believe Insomniac have stated Clank is ray-traced. But in the end it's just cool graphics tech. We'll see what DF makes of it. :)

I'm probably gonna pick Performance Mode most of the time.

There's a bunch of ray traced reflections and light bounce in the Ratchet demo. Thing is, you aren't really supposed to notice it; the point is to produce a more natural, less 'gamey' look.

I suspect we'll see the technology come on leaps and bounds now there will be so many more developers thinking about it. It's pretty incredible what's been wrung out of the current generation of hardware, so it'll be good to see some of that talent for optimisation applied to new rendering techniques rather than working around slow HDDs and rubbish CPUs.

Was just having a think about what potential games to get / pre-order for the new console, when I realised I was going to pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 for the PS4.

Then remembered that CD Projekt Red stated that all PS4 owners of the game will get a a free update to improve the game's visuals on PS5. Found this comment via a EuroGamer article:

'The developer further clarified that this would not be the final update to buff the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077. A beefier version of the game optimised for Microsoft and Sony's new machines will follow down the line - perhaps some time down the line - but again be available to PS4 and Xbox One owners free of charge.

"I can confirm this is not the final update," CD Projekt exec Michał Nowakowski said. "At some point we will have a more robust update for next-gen which we plan to give free of charge to anyone who purchases the PS4 or Xbox One version.'

So I might as well get the PS4 version of the game and receive the free upgrade, no point waiting and getting a PS5 version (as long as the game isn't delayed again?

As it does seem like the console will be launching around the same time as this game.

You're more optimistic than most of us cranky geriatrics here, but I agree with you completely.

Haha. It's not hard to come across as optimistic on this place. I use that Oscar Wilde quote for a reason. I mean, I'm actually pretty pessimistic about the state of the world right now, but when it comes to gaming there is a lot to be optimistic about. Not that the industry doesn't have a shitload of problems, but when it comes to the actual games there's more good stuff than I have time to play. I'm unabashedly excited about next-gen. Sure, the drip-feeding is annoying but people have to cut publishers and developers some slack here. As someone who's working in this industry I see it a lot. Delays, features getting scrapped, stuff being outright canceled. These are extraordinary times.

Focusing just on PS5, as this is the PS5 topic after all, I've watched that Future of Gaming event three times now. Live and the Easy Allies and Kinda Funny reaction videos. I thought it was a genuinley good show too. Perhaps there could have been more lengthy gameplay vids like the recent Ratchet & Clank one, but this was a show that had great looking sequels like Hitman 3 and Resident Evil Village, interesting new IP like Deathloop and whatever the hell Capcom's Pragmata is (but a new AAA IP from them is special in its own right), lovely colourful games like Ratchet and Clank and Astro Bot, big sequels like Horizon Forbidden West and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, promising indies like Stray, Kena (this is what indie games can look like these days) and JETT: The Far Shore, and the two games I'm looking forward to the most: Demon's Souls and Returnal.
And it's not just the shinies either. Sure, 4K and ray tracing are nice, and performance modes are a great thing too, but I already have a fast PC with a RTX 2080 Ti. It's also the super fast SSD, the DualSense, the spatial 3D audio and of course the exclusives.

Anyway, more to come soon apparently.

The official playstation website has changed from Holiday 2020 to Late 2020 for PS5's launch window.

Holiday is a US term so likely just making it more universal

It was slated for Nov to the latest it can dip into based on that is December so I wouldn't place much concern over it

Sony are not going to charge anybody anything, or even take orders until the price is announced. They are just taking names and will offer the console to a select few of them.... when the details are announced.

To me this is a sign of Sony having VERY, very limited amounts of hardware available in 2020 - but are going to release anyway because they said they would (to the shareholders).
