PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Sony are not going to charge anybody anything, or even take orders until the price is announced. They are just taking names and will offer the console to a select few of them.... when the details are announced.

To me this is a sign of Sony having VERY, very limited amounts of hardware available in 2020 - but are going to release anyway because they said they would (to the shareholders).

less a pre-order, and more of a raffle?

Surely you could have a binding contract that said you agreed to buy a PS5 provided the price was something reasonable and that it was released within a reasonable period of time? You have contracts without exact figures all the time. You might need a court to determine exactly what is reasonable, obviously.

You could have an option agreement which would bind the seller but not the buyer, so the buyer could walk away if they didn't like the price but if they did want to buy then the seller would have to perform their side of the agreement.

first-come, first-served because they have access to everyone's play histories etc.

What a dystopian thought. But on the bright side, playing Knack might finally pay off.

getting an invite to preorder

As DHP says it sounds like you win a preorder reservation, giving you a window to accept or reject your allocation when they open. I'll be quite surprised if we know the price before the end of September.

I don't think a pre order is a contract as much as a proposed arrangement. Either party can change conditions until both parties provide consideration,(your money for their console). If neither party provides their consideration, the contract isn't fulfilled. Haven't studied contract law for many years, so any legal eagles can correct me.

Yeah says they plan to. I plan to have a threesome with Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence,, I'll be hold my hands up and be honest progress, ain't going so well.

It would be very odd for a company to voluntarily inform their partners that they intend to double their early production plans if the reality is there were going to have barely any stock as is being implied above.

The fact that people are illogically freaking out about stock and working themselves up about is exactly why Sony is doing this pre order nonsense most likely recognising the sheer thirst people have (see the constant frustration in here over no news) and thinking they might not be able to get one.

People are bored with covid and Sony will happily take your money and they've recognised that and are upping their production for something that will likely be closer to a PS3 price than a PS4 at launch.

Hmm. I haven’t factored in conveyancing into my PS5 fund.

Seeing as this gamescon thing started an hour ago and not one word had been said about it I'm guessing it has been guff.

Someone's put a sticky thread at the top. Only just noticed it myself.

R&C demo in 4K is so good. It really pops.

Yeah, it looks lovely. I like R&C more than most but it's not the most compelling of series. As launch titles go, though, it's batter than most of the visual showcase sort of games we tend to get when consoles launch by a country mile.

Ratchet looks fine, if very familiar at this point, but the rift jumping thing isn't really wowing me. During combat gameplay it just seemed like a fast grapple hook and when falling from dimension to dimension there's clearly still loading screens. I don't know if 'rail grind in  various different locations after only a one second loading screen this time' is a really compelling hook given how much they've bigged this aspect up.

Story of these console launches is that everything sounds brilliant on paper but both Sony and Microsoft are doing a really bad job of showing how this is going to change the experiences we can expect in any major way. I have to assume there's more interesting uses of the dimension hopping in the game but it'd be nice to see at least one of them.
