Yeah, that’s what I’m saying, but as Gerbik says, I think they’ll sell out regardless. Plus, this is Sony we’re talking about.

What does it being Sony have to do with anything. You literally cannot have a contract of sale without an agreed price.

Is there a set time for some Sony thing tonight then?

GamesCom is tonight, isn't it? Hence with the pre-order incentive launching yesterday and long-running rumours that Sony would announce the date at the end of August... But who knows.

Because they’re a bunch of crazy cats. Besides, a preorder isn’t necessarily a sale, is it? I’ve preordered loads of things without having to pay up front.

With those though you've probably had a price that's guaranteed to not go higher but could go lower like amazon do.

Yes a pre-order is sale. The fact that some places only take the money at the point of shipment is irrelevant (you could cancel the contract at any point prior to shipment at get your money back if it is taken at point of ordering).  The key point is you are buying goods or services for an agreed price. Without the price, there cannot be a contract of sale. So no, you cannot have pre-orders without  a price.

If Sony do a lottery in the UK (its going to piss me off but...) its a very clever marketing spin for Sony not having very many consoles at launch.

it will be the gaming equivalent of a golden ticket and will create a awful lot of buzz leading up to Christmas and beyond.

...or it could backfire and create bad will toward them at the end of a not so wonderful year. I certainly won't be arsed trying to track one down if they have ten allocated to each shop for launch. Still waiting to see what's going on with DS.

Have Gerbik and JPL just created a Sony show tonight completely out of their imaginations?

GamesCom tonight. I don't know about all this pre-order/price reveal stuff. I'm just excitedly getting dragged along with what people are talking about in here!

Fair enough. I just hope they give us the info tonight.

I reckon they're announcing Ridge Racer tonight.

they should do a ratchet and clank SSD-o-matic Ridge Racer where you are basically playing every single ridge racer game at the same time and it switches between graphics and track layouts and shit on the fly (maybe in time with the music). Like before you die and your life flashes before your eyes except it's mostly ridge racer.

That said, Geoff has promised us two hours of World Exclusives, so, yeah, Ratchet and Clank is all your getting. Hey,  it might run out to have more interesting stuff that Sony and MS combined. Not exactly a high bar this year.

edit - He has now said it will be shit and not to expect anything exciting.

Just imagine the interactive flashbacks Hideo Kojima could do with an SSD. Or the Silent Hill reality swaps you could do. Or a Castlevania with parallel castles you swap even more quickly than in Harmony of Dissonance.

Boy do I wish Konami still made games.

I’ve just gone back and read the Verge article, so am I right in assuming that registration to be in with a chance of getting an invite to preorder means they don’t need to reveal the price until those preorders become active, which could still be a while off?

Probably a couple of weeks until pre-orders open at least, to give people time to register their interest.

They could announce the pre-order date before pre-orders actually open but I think it’s more likely they’d dump the launch information and open orders in relatively quick succession.

It has gotten lost in the thread a bit, but someone did make the point that this is the US direct to customer store that Sony runs, holding this lottery against their own stock allocation.

Every other retailer could do this right now too. They're literally just creating a email marketing list.
